Beside getting a best pic nom it also outgrossed Infinity War, meaning millions of people were waiting and got to see something In Black Panther they weren’t getting in any other super hero movie.

1.3billion > 2billion. Yup, millions more were getting something from BP that they couldn’t find in IW. Math checks out.

(And if you’re talking about domestic it only did $20,000 more, not exactly millions of people worth )

Good points from both sides here, but that particular post was just mired in nonsense. And it’s nice to see people disagree but still converse well like ZE and Leo.

Right, so you don't get why it matters. Maybe just accept that you don't have the experience or knowledge to see why it's being recognized. No need to trash it for what it represents, especially if you aren't an expert in the social arena in which it lives. It's ok to be ignorant about something, that's not a bad thing.

So apparently no "expert in the social arena" beyond hysterics have analyzed this film favorably. I really do dare you to find one, because I have been searching. No, "the first led black superhero" doesn't count. A drill down of key plot points, looked at critically. The ignorant here is you, because you apply no critical thinking. You go with the flow, and if someone disagrees, you call them ignorant. That's not how it goes. I have stated several times why I believe the plot of BP is insulting to the very same people that claim (or is claimed for them by brain dead "critics"). Dude, calm down. I'm not offering a counter argument to your "this movie is mediocre because it shows African themes with modern rap music" because that is not a nuanced critical argument. I am also not trying to convince you the movie is good or great, nor have I said it was good or great. I also said that being ignorant of a thing was not "bad" and gave an example of where I failed to understand something. I don't think your "The ignorant here is you" comment was made constructively, but I don't know your intent, this is the internet.

I will never understand why people keep trying to change other peoples minds over the internet. If i enjoy something and you don't like it who cares. If you enjoyed something and i don't who cares. I love all the Marvel Flims some are weak some are great but they all kick ass in my book and that is my opinion. I am not a fan of Aquaman but i think great that DC put out something that a lot of people enjoyed and i'm not ever going to argue why people should not have enjoyed it or anything else. If it had been put up for an Oscar i would say the same thing as i said for BP that i'm happy a comic book movie is getting some recognition

Wait wait wait, at no point did I say or meant "don't enjoy it". Just don't call it what it is not. Hey, I grew up in the 90s and love me some stupid Arnold action flicks too, but at no point do I call them "important" or "social conscious" or "woke" or whatever nonsense label they stick on them these days. That's all I care to change. Anyone can enjoy whatever they want.

I'm not sure stating opinions while hiding behind an avatar qualifies as projecting power. And what's funny is you probably have met some of them in real life, it's just they're not quite so bold in the harsh light of day.

Its not even the first black led Superhero. "Blankman" took that slot over 25 years ago. And only 10 years ago the Blade trilogy was black led as well. People only flipped out about this because SJW politics is such a huge thing today (even in movie reviews) and marvel no doubt appreciated the dubiously written good press. A ticket to Black Panther wasn't just a ticket to a mediocre superhero movie. It was a statement against (imaginary) white oppression!

Black Panther wasn't a bad movie. Actually it was a fairly enjoyable one. But it wasn't substantially better than your average MCU film, let alone the second coming of "The Dark Knight" like some make it out to be. Certainly not deserving of the only MCU film to be nominated for Best Picture.

I took some kids to my fire department years ago, a sister and brother. She was 5 and he was 7. So they got to climb all over the trucks and ambulance. Play with the tools, lights, siren and shoot some water out of the hose. Lots of fun. On the way home i asked what they liked best and she said "Molly". I was kind of suprised and confused because molly was one of the firefighter/medics. I asked her why and she said " i did not think a girl could be a firefighter".

So i get the important part of BP because it's important to see someone who is like you doing other things than you normally see. Yes it's just a movie but most of the time black people are the sidekick, criminal or comic relief. So to have a world (even fantasy) on screen is important to just to see yourself (if your black) in positive light. It was also cool to have something on earth happen outside of New York for once

We all have our opinions and none will be changed here.

Very well said. Forgot about Blade completely. And he is such a stronger character than BP in my opinion.
There was also Spawn before Blade I think, with MJW.

Great point and a great story. The issue being that if you've not grown up in America where everything you've ever seen, just about, did not feature something of this level with folks that look like you, you might be at risk of missing the point. That's all.

Don't forget the big shakeup of who could vote for awards after last year. It's not a bunch of 70ish year old white men anymore. It's a mix of young, old, male, female, gay, straight, black, asian, white, etc.

BP would not have been even considered if they had the same people as they have always had.

That's a good point. They wanted more "popular" entries to appear in there so they have more ratings.

BP was mediocre to fairly decent at best. 7/10. Not even the top 5 MCU movie. I understand if some people are “moved” by the nearly all black cast, but that doesn’t make it a masterpiece of a movie still. Call a spade a spade. The Oscar nomination for best picture is a joke.
