I actually think the Red Star version looks better than the over-priced HT version. - plus this one has articulation and two heads.

It's a lot more expensive now, as I thought it was $179 originally. Now showing as $252.

The HT is $220 (plus delivery).


When I was comparing the two the thing that stood out was how much more accurate the HT is in body shape, the way the shoulders slope down and appear as a single mass connected to the head. The Red Star is more square shouldered, with the shoulder joints more prominent.

I'll stick with just the HT. I used rewards on him so he's only going to cost me the price of shipping (though DHL will likely charge full value VAT as they did for the 'free' Mandalorian Scout Trooper).

The Red Star figure doesn’t even look as good as the 1/12 scale figure from McFarlane…strange that anyone would prefer that version over the Hot Toys figure, but to each their own I guess.

This one's getting more tempting after revisiting the movie. I almost wish HT would make even more of their chunkier/not-quite-human proportioned characters as museum-ish power poses like this, since I can't imagine trying to put King Shark in some zany gymnastic pose. Probably the only thing stopping me from jumping on this yet is whether or not they make Harley's costume from the opening scene to pair with him.

Even with the price increase, the cost of shipping from SS is killer — and the bootleg has more articulation and two heads — I’ll take that over a virtual statue any day.

Huh why is the HT being called overpriced when it's nearly the same as a 3rd party piece. That thing looks like a NECA with poor skin detail.

There are things to like about the Red Star version - I do like that this comes with a few accessories and the bloodier mawed headsculpt, in fact I do think both headsculpts in general are potentially a tiny bit better than Hot Toys's figure which is looking a bit too far up (YMMV).

BUT

I still prefer the Hot Toys figure, the skin texture and detail looks better, and the joints on the other figure (while allowing for greater poseability which is nice but not really essential for this character) cheapen the look considerably. My preference is for something that looks amazing that I can only keep in 1 or 2 poses than a highly poseable figure that's going to annoy me when I look at it on the shelf.
I also like that the Hot Toys figure is going to be a little taller and the silhouette seems a touch more accurate on the HT also.

I will also say that its unheard of, ridiculous even, for an unlicensed 3rd party figure to charge MORE than the official Hot Toys release of a character. Which is either an indication of what a good price Hot Toys are offering this figure at, OR it indicates Red Star Toys greed - a bit of both I suspect in this case.

Also I really want to support Hot Toys going out of their comfort zone, doing a really unique and fun figure from a not as universally recognized (Disney) brand, with no recyclable components or molds - and doing so at a really fair price. Fair enough to them I say (in this specific case).

Great points, and I totally agree. I've got both versions on order, because they both have pros and cons. I probably wouldn't get the Red Star version at the new price. Kind of feel like I can wait to see how they feel in hand before deciding. I might get rid of one, but who knows, I might end up keeping both.

That's what I like about the HT.

King Shark isn't a very mobile character on screen, so all he has to do on the shelf is look like King Shark. I have a space ready for him in between the original Squad of Harley, Deadshot, Flag and Katana.

At $179 the figure was a consideration with it's visual drawbacks, but at $252 he's a lot easier to pass on.

Let’s be honest…the bootleg figure looks like garbage…the Hot Toys figure looks like King Shark…I wouldn’t display the bootleg for free because it would bring down whatever shelf it was on.

It just shows how committed to realism Hot Toys are, since sharks routinely lose their teeth.


Your post reminded me of the comic book character, Gums...

I don't know whether it's the angle, but you'd think that the teeth were too big to be hidden. Maybe they did forget to put his dentures in.
