Sorry, I meant in-hand side by side - the rebelscum pics are bit dated. Most of the pics of the DX25 Vader helmet's apps I've seen look pretty much identical to my in-hand DX07 helmet apps (right down to matches of subtle details in weathering apps and the eyebrows,) but hard to say for sure without the two helmets side by side up-close. Does anyone have both in-hand to post pics?

The sweaty hair has that really odd bigfoot/conehead pointy top. I'm considering putting mine in boiling water to see if that evens it out. I wonder if its one of those situations where a head/hair has been sitting tightly in a tray and it's distorted the shape. Happens with Hasbro figures sometimes and boilingw ater would bring it back to proper shape.

Easily best HS for ROTJ Luke

Can you post a pic of your DX07 version? I doubt there's much difference from the Rebelscum pic as those were the paint apps of the time.
HT have improved since then, especially with the eye and eyebrow work.

Wow... that's quite the statement. Could be very true.

What's better?
Curiosity got the better of me. As a lot of you know, I've been semi-retired from collecting for quite a while now, but I just got one from HK because it jumped out at me so much. Quick and dirty review:

  • At one time or another I've owned DX07, HT ANH, HT Stormtrooper disguise (same sculpt, different eye placement) ... SSC X-Wing Pilot, SSC Snowspeeder, HT Snowspeeder ... and overall this is the most Hamill sculpt I've ever seen, IMO.
  • I think the regular hair is stronger than the dueling hair by a fair margin. HT did a great job and I think some of the reviewers are right: the left side (Luke's left, your right when he's in front of you) is a stronger likeness.
  • Yes, the outfit is too tight and in spite of extremely subtle weathering, too clean, but it still evokes the character very well and does look better with a few posing creases.
  • The portrait suffers from a touch of sharpness and idealization but it has the bones for a close to dead-on likeness (in this scale) given good lighting and angles.
  • In spite of having never had anything deteriorate over about a decade of collecting (central air, stable and relatively low humidity) I do worry about the belt and boots because they're thin and pleather-y.
  • I played ESB on my laptop while examining the figure, it's a very good match overall both in terms of actual resemblance and being evocative.
  • It looks great with AOTC R2.
Will I keep it?

Well ... it's one of the most iconic representations of the character, but the Snowspeeder outfit is more interesting visually. If I *did* lose this one, I'd most likely consider keeping the DX25 sculpt on the Snowspeeder set.

Should you get one?

If you collect 1:6 Star Wars, 100%.

*glum face* Thanks alot for your review... now I have to hunt one down.
Honestly ... I think you do. There's so much striking one-sixth out there right now that it's easy to get desensitized, but I do think this figure is special. I'll post some snapshots over the next few days if work eases up.

Okay, so I have the day off.

I compared HT Snowspeeder Luke side by side with DX25 and it's not even close. It explains why originally, I was ultimately underwhelmed by what I had considered a grail piece -- I wasn't burned out on collecting the Snowspeeder sculpt was weird.

My definitive Luke Skywalker will be the DX25 portrait on the Snowspeeder Luke set. It took twelve years and seven one-sixth Lukes to satisfy me. Does this mean they could nail ANH Luke if they did a 2.0? Who knows. Maybe in another few years LOL

I'll update you with the traditional bad iPhone snapshots later.

I'm more in the middle on this. I'm in the process of doing a reset on all my Lukes (I won't cite the number of 1/6 Lukes I have because it's genuinely shocking and a bit embarrassing :lol ) and have bought quite a few (a number that's also a bit embarrassing) of the new Mando/DX24 Luke sculpt. In starting to decide which heads go where, overall I do feel like the Jedi Luke sculpt works for determined/action poses/settings and the DX24 is better for neutral "museum" poses.

To me, though the DX24 is clearly the better overall, they both have strengths and weaknesses - the DX24 does have a slightly too-neutral expression and does seem slightly "CGI" in hand. It also brings to mind that "blank stare" grouping of HT SW sculpts back when ANH Luke/Han/Leia came out, though from certain angles it does come across as "subtly determined" rather than the more waxwork look of those early HT figs.

I will post some pics once my great Luke reset is done but I was surprised to be making decisions to keep the Jedi Luke sculpt in place instead of swapping it out as planned (rest assured, no Luke head will be going to waste.) I will also be using the DX24 head on a couple of ANH customs, so will be interesting to see how it holds up for ANH (or not...) because it's technically a slightly older MH.
