If HT was able to get Depp's likeness for POTC, I don't see why they couldn't for this.

I'm sure Depp's likeness was part of the POTC license since it was a huge franchise. That might not be the case with a smaller film like Edward Scissorhands.

I'm down for getting one just for how detailed the body/outfit is. The hair/likeness may be off by a bit, but I feel it's still worth a purchase.

I think this figure is more like Jonathan Tucker ,not Johnny Depp at all……even 50% likeness

Yes, it could always be worse :lol

I would guess that WB (for whatever reason) didn't secure Depp's likeness for the film and HT either chose not to pursue it or it wasn't granted.
Yes it could have been. I'm afraid there wont be another Ed and this one will be the closest we're ever likely to get. It's the only reason I bought the McFarlane one to start with.

What really amazes me is that no one cares to comment on Hot Toys scandalous practice of not getting a license and then bothering to issue a figure. That may not be so scandalous, but what is is that they charge just as much for a licensed figure as a non licensed figure. The best example of this would be Dallas and Kane. One is Dallas and the other isn't Kane. Surely that ought to translate into a substantial saving on the cost of a figure? But noooo, they are priced the same. It's called unnecessary greed. They'd still make just as much profit, if they priced it down, per figure. Instead they rip on those that support them. That's not hot.

Older movies like Edward Scissorhands and Alien don't have the actor's likeness rights included with the movie license. Hot Toys is paying the movie studio for the license but for some reason are unable to acquire the actor's permission. The case is entirely different for the POTC figures because the actor's likeness rights are included with the movie license. You can't fault Hot Toys here. If the actor doesn't want his likeness used there is nothing they can do.

Are you speculating or are you certain? I was under the impression that older movies, where likeness rights were in doubt, were from a time when merchandising wasn't a part of the scene, and that these days most actors signed away their rights as part of their contract.

That is except for bigger stars that have the weight to sell their likeness rights separately. Depp may be one such actor, but even then it is one or the other. Either the studio has them or the actor. It would seriously hamper any legal negotiation, for both to have such rights, when someone wanted to sell merchandise. It would also then be a case of what time in their career an actor was able to negotiate their own likeness rights.

I'm not saying that both the movie studio and Depp has Johnny Depp likeness rights. In this case I would say Johnny Depp has the final say. The movie studio has the rights to the "Edward Scissorhands" character. So Hot Toys is not ripping off collectors because they didn't acquire Depp rights and are still charging the regular price. They are still paying for "Edward Scissorhands" rights. If anything if they acquire Depp rights that would make the figure even more expensive. Maybe the additional cost would've put the figure at such a high price point that it wasn't worth it to go for the Depp likeness.

This is all speculation on my part from what I have read in past discussions (particularly the Kane figure from Alien). Anyone who knows more about this feel free to elaborate even more. Just saying that Hot Toys is not trying to cheat collectors as you have suggested. If you are feeling cheated then don't buy it.

I made a mini movie poster in anticipation. I'm really getting stoked for this one now. :rock

That looks very nice! Is that a card protector for baseball/basketball cards? Think I might do something similar for my Batman figures.

I, too, would be interested in someone, more knowledgeable on these issues, chiming in.

I can see what you're getting at darren, but it also raises other questions. Like what about version 1 Joker. It didn't look like Heath Ledger, but it was licensed so perhaps it should have. Them saying it was lack of reference material doesn't quite wash either. Surely a licensed item would get reference material from the studio. They never said they couldn't get or didn't have the rights in that instance. There are more instances and probably just as many reasons. I just wanted to point out some things people may not have thought of and generate some discussion, hopefully to get a better understanding.

Which brings me to you saying I suggested that they cheated collectors. I never said that or suggested it, rather, I insinuated that they may be overcharging collectors, or profiteering. No law against it. People buy what they choose.

Back on topic, I'm looking forward to seeing what can be done to improve the figure, either by Hot Toys or customisers. I like the sound of Dark Artists suggestion of a rooted hairpiece. Can't wait to see that one.

I don't know if anybody posted it yet, but Hot Toys has the figure on their website:

This is so close for me.

It's interesting that they don't list who did the face sculpt. It must be the US artist.

Artists:
Hair sculpt by Joseph Tsang
Accessory Sculpt by Kouhei Okui
Clothes design by Masayuki Ishigami
Paint by JC.Hong

looks nothing like Depp, imo.

Everything else is great though

maybe HT will make a head improved version with another suit from the movie ,just like the 2nd Joker.
