I'm the guy that says it's hard to find someone who can improve enough on factory paint (nowadays at least) that's worth how much money custom painters charge. The biggest problem I have is when someone makes a custom head, casts it in cheap resin or plastic which is either gray or white, then another customizer does an entire paintjob on the head. It almost inevitably ends up looking like a toy. If the custom is cast in translucent resin and the painter can forego the flesh tone coat and go straight for the details, it's a much better process. Unfortunately, even then you only have a few people that can legitimately pull off factory-level paints. And by that I mean the paints we get now from HT. Almost any customizer can improve on what we got when BRJ came out.

[Edit] I have no response to this that doesn't make me sound like a ____.

P.S. I think the factory BR paint is great.

:lol

It took me a second to see it but when I did....

I thought it was too. Although I thought crow did a great job.

Sound like a ____ if you want, lord knows I've done it enough times to give a ____. People charge too much for ____ty paintjobs and other people fawn all over them for it. It happens every day. *shrug*

Luckily, I don't commission or charge for mine, I just do it for fun. So if I'm putting ____ paint out there, at least no one's getting ripped off.

And yes, the factory paint was horrendous. Always has been. Magic marker, ruler-straight paint "drips", makeup too thin over almost all the sculpt except for where it's way too thick around the lips, etc...looks like someone painted it with a colored pencil. It's great for that era's factory paint, sure, but it was obviously before they started putting effort toward matching the production pieces to the prototype.

cr0w, you're comparing a prototype photo though. Even still, the one below from mcwtoys, seems to have variations in paint procedures. No discredit to wookster as I'm pretty sure thats his photos, what appears to be like living room lighting that is not doing the sculpt paintwork any favours. Mine never came with heavy runs.

Under proper lighting conditions, it's far from horrendous. I'm sure some will jump in saying I'm now biased. Maybe it would have been better if I didn't own it but then some would turn that around as well. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

So, cr0w, yours came with the heavy runs like the below picture?

Yeah, mine came like that. Lighting is everything, sure, but the stock paint (in my opinion) is crap. I own two of 'em.

Again, here's the difference between my repaint and others that I critique: I don't charge people out the ass for sub-par work. I don't take commissions, and I don't paint anything for anyone but myself. I've bought one custom in my life, everything else I do myself. If my perspective as someone who actually paints pisses those off who are happy to pay others a ton of cash to do work I don't think is worth the prices they charge, so be it. My personal views on others' commissioned work shouldn't be brought up unless I decide to start charging horse ____ prices for horse ____ work. I put this up on a lark because I thought the BR Joker head can really shine even more than it does from stock if you put some work into it, not for anyone to bring up, "OH LOL YOU REPAINT BUT I THOUGHT YOU SAID CUSTOM IS NEVER BETTER THAN FACTORY!!1!" The word "never" didn't come out of my mouth regarding custom paints matching factory. Not once. I said most of the time it doesn't match what HT puts out today. They were still in production paint dark ages when BRJ came out.

Cr0w can I see some more pics of your repaint?, close ups if possible ..I think you have vastly improved it and I may have a go at doing it myself.

It's a sad state when collectors can't get along, when their ego's take over and it just becomes as bad as any general forum. Collectible forums use to stand out when I saw it years ago. Now it feels like every other trashy place.

Like I've said, I like your repaint. It's cool to see that head-sculpt with a less smudged look. However, I would not pay you to do it for me. No offense intended, just truth.

With custom work, I personally believe you get what you pay for. If I want paint that rivals or surpasses Hot Toys I am willing to pay a premium for it. And yes, I believe there are guys here that surpass Hot Toys. Even recent Hot Toys. The one head I have that's painted by boot25 is the best 1/6 scale paint job I've ever seen in-hand, and it was worth every penny.

Regarding the BR head. Again, I think the stock paint is great.

That's not to say you shouldn't have repainted yours. You wanted a different look and I think it's cool you went for it.

I'm glad you think the stock paint looks great. It reinforces my views on people being willing to put up with crap paint. Anyone who thinks the stock BR Joker's paint is great or has ever praised BobbyC's 1/6 paint work has an invalid opinion to me. And I'm actually pretty glad you wouldn't pay for my work. It keeps me out of the league of people who charge for ____.

Unreal. It really never changes. Joker threads at it's best that only ever leads to insults. In fact anything to do with Nolan Batman. So sad.

Maglor, if you don't have time, why are you responding.

I haven't insulted cr0w. Sorry if he took it that way. :peace

And vodoun, do you really feel you are in a position to complain about collectors not getting along and insulting others?

I was never a massive fan of this paint job. The proto pics looked a lot better than what we got. There is far too much going on around his lips and all the eye smudges seem fake, like they have been drawn on.

Maglor, Yes, I do because I don't resort to telling others they should make out because you don't agree with someone in a discussion. OCD is not name calling. It's a fact. You bring a lot of aggression and hostility to the board. You've had a number of rowdy discussions for the sake of things with other members.

Plus my point still stands. Not only that, not that long ago you said you had me on ignore. Yet you still respond to my posts. For a person that has no time.

Could you translate that to 'American' English please, I honestly don't understand. :lol

I won't deny I've had conflict with members in the past. But it's been pretty smooth lately. I'm not gonna get into a fight about who 'brings more aggression and hostility'.

You're right. I still mean to, but the fact is you have a lot of experience as a 1/6 collector, so you contribute a lot of valuable stuff. I hate to miss out on some of that.

I just wish every other post wasn't about how crappy this forum is now, and how much you dislike members and their tastes/collecting style.

Well said. This community is like a big family. Quarrel is everywhere. Hell I would iss Nam if he left the board. :lol

I have just taken out my original BR Joker and compared it to my SmallStudios painted. I have to agree with crow here. That paintjob is really a little weak, yet the 2nd BR sculpt is far superior and can still holdup with DX01... :dunno

I think cr0w has some valid points. A lot of people really do pay for subpar paint jobs or customs. They shell out loads for it. A great example is the BobbyC heads. Cheese Louise, when I see those heads, I feel pity for the people who paid like $1000 for those things.

But I also think Mag makes great points. I'm looking at my BR Joker right now and the paint is actually quite nice. After looking at my DX, I realize that the BR Joker actually has better paint.

Honestly, I'm sure that both of you have had your fair share of fights. I can testify that I have gotten into many fights in the past, especially when I was younger. This board is not exactly the most friendly place on the web, and there is a lot of jabbing and people who antagonize people to start fights.

So I think we should just try to enjoy the boards, despite the many problems here. We all come here for our love of action figures.

Back on topic. My DX01 has lost it's magic. Now that the woo of it being a new figure is gone, I see all of the problems with the paint applications, the bad looking hair, and the inaccurate outfit.
