Looks way better. i will try the same, but as Mags said, will try to extend the bottom lid more than the top. Nice work! Like you say, when you see what a difference this makes you wonder why HT couldn't have done this themselves!

Any tips on how to get the PERS out of the head?

I do get Mag's point though and I believe he is right, the bottom lid should come up instead of the top coming down.

But the fact that Rory achieved the squint by doing it the sleepy way is not all that apparent unless you look really closely. The overall effect to me is just of seeing squinted eyes which look a helluva lot better than the stock to me

Thanks Void. Regarding eye squinting: Well actually that very much depends, if you are focusing your eyes, as in to target something, both eyelids come in. The bottom comes up to form an almost straight line, the top one comes down to meet it. Eyelids come down? And the DX sculpt already has an almost straight line under the eye, thats as far "up" as eyelids naturally go, your top lid comes down to meet it. The reason the existing eyes look so derpy is because of the curve of the top lid. It's crazy round.

Anyway, whatever, you can pose them anyway you like with this mod. And I am pretty happy with the result.

Sorry, I know that was going a bit too far, but I don't see squinty, I see sleepy.


To be fair, I've seen 3 eyelid mods done to Batman figures and I haven't liked any of them. I'm not sure what it would take to look natural to my eyes, but I have a feeling only adding lid to the bottom might be the trick. If I ever get the nerve to try it, that will be my plan.

Have you actually tried it in the mirror? Your top lid barely moves in any position. A tiny, tiny bit with your head up, but it's still mostly bottom lid.

I think it's a little weird looking to be honest? It think maybe you need to take more off the chin and leave a little more over the mouth? The distance from lips to nose, lips to chin looks off IMO. I'm sure it would be easy to fill with milliput?

on a side note, did you bang the tip of your nose? it seems to have a flat end in those pics?

1) The DX02 face plate there has a bigger upper lip than any of the DX12 stock face plates, so...

2) No the nose tip isn't flat. Damn you for making me panic for a second! :cuss :lol

Mags, the highest your bottom lid can go is to form an almost straight line across the bottom of your eyeball. That's why your lid hangs from above like a window shutter, it slides down over your eyeball when you close your eyes. I studied anatomy for 4 years. But if you don't like it mate that's cool, no hassle. I think it looks ****ing awesome, and takes that horrible toy look away from the DX12.

Problem is the DX sculpt bottom lid already looks like it's flattened out, when you squint your bottom lid goes almost flat as the muscles around it push in?

No question, the corrected eyes look much better! :clap

I'm not sure I understand the part about taking out the PERS though,
do you mean you took out the eyeballs and worked on the eyelids still attached to the cowl?
Or, did you find a way to take everything out?
Sorry about the questions but I haven't received the figure yet and I have a hard time visualizing the operation.

Nice work, rory, it's definitely an improvement over the stock eyes. Okay, well, I can kinda understand the critiques saying that it looks a tad sleepy, but I'd take it over what we actually get any day.

When you say that the this particular mod is difficult, I'm assuming you just mean the process of freeing the eyes from the cowl is difficult? Did you cut yourself or something as well?

Amazing mod Rory.
Bottomline, it is 100% better than the stock PERS.
I really need to get into sculping. I love to mod my figures but have yet to get my hands dirty in sculpting.

I think the mod is awesome, plus it took a lot of ****** for you to do it
I would be scared s***less to try to do this mod, any way you and Mags are doing an excellent job modding the dx12, I hope HT takes notice and correct the many issues with this figure next time they do it.

The eyes never look that big on display... it wasn't a huge issue for me like the faceplates.

The custom faceplate of the Bale sculpts' mold makes a more substantial difference in likeness for me.

I took very little off the top of the plate. Right now, the modified DX02 face plate has a much taller upper lip than any of the DX12 face plates. So If it looks off, it's not because the upper lip is to thin, believe me.

Just a heads up, if you do modify any of the DX02 faces be advised that less is more. In the effort of trying to get it "perfect" (after posting WIP pics) I basically ended up sanding so much off that it is pretty much unusable.

The good news is that I prefer the neutral DX02 face so I can take what I learned from modding the open mouth and get that one right... Hopefully. :pray:

Any advice about how to get that PERS plate out? (you said you almost lost a finger--what did you use?)

And what did you use to make the eyelid? Skulpey?
