Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

Firstly i am a big fan of X-Men than any other comic franchise, however i hardly ever go to the cinema.

1) Most films don't need the big screen experience for me
2) I hardly ever get the time.

So i managed to catch the final showing of X-Men First Class tonight and...

AMAZING F-ING AMAZING 99% of the film was perfect.

I haven't seen a film that satisfied on this level in so long.

  • The script
  • Characterizations
  • Dialogue
  • CGI
  • Costumes / Make-Up
  • Setting

All were handled expertly, the pace moved from one scene to the next with no stutter or slow down, the characters were nearly all unique and engaging, with at least one quality that defined their presence.

I loved how it wasn't watered down and aimed for kids, the setting, language, violence, made sense to the film and was seamlessly integrated into the tone of the film, a watered down version wouldn't have had the same impact.

The schism of the mutants making a choice of which side was right for them wasn't as black and white as the previous trilogy, that is to say it was done with more finesse in this film.

When Angel left, you really understood why, because we saw that her character resented how the humans perceive her, Beast' need to fit in was unique to him, where as the relationship blossoming between Mystique and Magneto made sense, he understood her more than Charles did (more on that in a bit), Banshee was the most under-developed, Havok was mainly there to be the one who learned to control his powers the most.

For the relationship between Mystique and Charles, was a subject of conflicting debate by the end, there was a great poistive for the way it works and a negative.

The negative is that with them spending the most time together Charles should've known her wishes in regard to her natural from, yet he didn't, her ideals changed throughout the film but the time and relationship should factor into his understanding, and it would've been good to see that he was telling her to be proud of who she was.

The positive is almost the same, with the way it worked at the end, it felt like it was done to show that Charles wasn't all-knowing, he is as fallible as the rest of us. he was proud to be a Mutant because he could fit in, and she couldn't fit in as her true self, so this idea is what separated them, Erik understood what it was like to be set apart for who he was as a Jew during the Holocaust and i like how it was that that drew them together at the end.

The end when Charles was hit by the bullet worked perfectly in the scope of the film, the Nazi stuff at the first act was awesome, Logan's "F off" was hilarious, as was adult Mystique's appearance, these were cameos that had a bit of meaning to the story, rather than just thrown in willie-nilly.

The Make-up and CGI on Beast was easily 100 times better than X3, the Effects worked flawlessly, with one or two exceptions, I'm pretty sure there were at least two instances where shots didn't match:

The gun to Erik's head seemed to touch his head in one shot then be away in the next, and when Erik stabs the Nazi's hand in one shot the knife looks to be next to his hand in the table instead.

The costumes were great, as was the whole 40's and 60''s setting, i loved the way in which everything seemed in it's infancy from the old computers of Cerebro, to the lack of any known mutants or idea of mutancy, if in a sequel they showed the government working on a primitive sentinel program that was malfunctioning and looked cheap, that would work brilliantly.

The casting worked brilliantly on all fronts but one, and this is my only gripe with the film, the Whirlwind bloke looks like a metro-sexual hair model and with the time, effort and money spent on his powers they could've given his character at least one or two lines, rather than his silent the whole film.

The Coin was awesome, as was Azazel dropping Cia blokes from the Sky.

I don't need picture perfect reproductions of the comic, i want the filmmakers to make the story of the film believable and to capture the essence and tone of the universe of characters, the characters in this worked great for me, it showed the X universe to be full of heart, to be a growing family, the setting, and time-frame and way in which it was done, made this much more believable than i thought it would be. This is a real Film about people with superpowers, yet it unravels in way that would exist in our reality, rather than being a campy absurdity.

This is the best comic book movie around period, 10% Humour, 70% Drama, 10% Heart, 10% Spy-Thriller.
This is a grown-up film with grown-up techniques and storytelling about superheroes, rather than a superhero popcorn flick with a bunch of basic filmmaking problems.

So now to Hot Toys...

I now want in this order:

Must Haves
Magneto (Yellow Costume & Helmet and a Casual Nazi hunting attire)
Beast (Yellow Costume)
Charles (Yellow and Casual)
Azazel
Mystique

I'd also get
Banshee
Sebastian Shaw
Emma Frost
Havok

I have a bad feeling that this line won't go far, which is a HUGE shame as i loved almost every character, and as you can see from my list i'll buy them all.

So guys please Buy 'em, Buy all of 'em.

Make it a profitable line for Hot toys so we can get a good amount of Figures.

With Magneto perhaps getting a showing at Ani-Com, I really hope HT make's Magneto's helmet Metal.

Thor got a metal hammer, cap and eloctro-plated shield, Magneto needs some kind ogpf metal on that helmet.

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

Yea the Only figure i would really buy is a Magneto and Emma. If the realease others than i would still buy them depending how they decide to go.

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

Magneto is the only figure i would buy for sure ...and maybe Xavier.

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

Well given that it was just rumored a "Marvel" figure and they've got another Cap figure rumored I wasn't counting on this showing anyway.

In this article about rise of the planet of the apes, the comments are saying what i've felt all along

That X-Men first Class is the best superhero film of the year, as well of one of the best films of the year.

And yet... This thread, and interest and x-men Hot Toys is shockingly low.

People are expecting at least every single Avengers character and yet people are only expecting two X-Men figures max.

To this i say..

wtf.gif

Well FOX took liberties with their appearances, which characters they used, etc.. while Marvel Studios stayed fairly close to source material in looks/characters.

I hope they at least make Emma Frost. She's the only one I'd buy after Magneto. I'd possibly buy Mystique.

Two figures??? That's optimistic. I'm expecting only one. Anything more and I'll be pleasantly surprised. This movie deserves a full offering, but realistically I don't think that will happen unless DVD/BD sales are through to the roof.

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

We'll get two figures easily. No way they are going to get this license and not bother to make both Charles and Erik. Past that is being a little optimistic.

Well, I think it's because of the designs they chose for this X-Men film. It suited the film very well, with no over the top designs (except perhaps Magneto's very last outfit :ohbfrank:). However for action figures I'd say for them to make a team of 5 or 6 characters who pretty much look the same would maybe make a slightly boring display, whereas the Avengers will look more different and colourful.
Of course there are other characters who didn't sport the flight suits, like Emma Frost and Shaw, but I don't know if there would be much demand for them.

The only one I'd consider picking up right now is Magneto, but only if he's released wearing the flightsuit.

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

the only one id really want is whitequeen. because she looks as she should from the comics.
other than that magneto, just for the awesome helmet.

X-Men First Class is rated as a better film than Thor and Captain America on Rotten Tomatoes AND IMDB. Yet people are expecting...

New Thor
New Iron Man
New Captain America
New Black Widow
Hawkeye
Nick Fury
and Hulk

all from the Avengers film alone.

So why will HT make so many of these characters? even doubles?

But only Charles and Erik from a license that is more highly regarded?

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

X-Men is a better film then all those you listed I just don't think it's as big of a money maker. More people are interested in general superhero flicks that are more in the norm.

by that logic we should have a whole range of figures from godfather and shawshank redemption by ht. but guess what... money talks.

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

^^ True, but these films are in the same genre and marketed to the same consumerbase.

So anyone interested in Avengers is automatically interested in or at least aware of this X-Men film, and with X-Men being better rated by that consumerbase, then it stands to reason that an equal amount of figures should be produced.

Or at least a sizable chunk

Re: Hot Toys-MMS: X-Men 1st Class

Simply ask yourself which movie(s) is geared more toward licensed merchandising.

Really not hard to see that HTs has more to work with in the Avengers than X Men 1st Class...even though I agree it was the better pic of the 3.

i don't think you can assume x-men was better rated by "that" fanbase, based on imdb and rotten tomatoes, since they're used by every type of movie-goer.

i think the most obvious argument is the one already given... the avengers just make for more interesting looking figures, and represent more famous/prominent characters from the marvel roster.

I love Batman, Spider-Man and Iron Man, But I don't love Thor (better then I thought it would be at least). I wanted to like Captain America this year, but it wasn't all that great to me. So saying that just because one likes superhero movies doesn't mean they like ALL superhero movies. In fact, this is the first X-Men I really enjoyed. Never really got into the other ones. I wish it where this way. But HT is a co. FC didn't do too spectacular at the box office compared to other hero-flicks.
So naturally there's less demand then huge box office smasher.
