People say that Friday 13th is a bad day but it was good enough for me because I got my CW Winter Soldier figure today from HK and can’t be happier for the coming weekend to play with it.
I did a few photos with an artificial lightening set and will do more over the weekend.
I loved the figure and I’m definitely keeping my other one with SS for a custom Buck project, so here is my small review.
I think the HT (HOT TOYS) did a great graphic job and overall presentation for the box cover, I liked the big front Winter Soldier portrait and I may use it for my diorama settings. However the inner box looks a bit cheaper and “economy made” with a thinner cardstock choice, especially compare to the Winter Soldier Buck packaging. It feels flimsy and the blue color shade isn’t the best here. I don’t know if the HT tried to do a classic “Cap blue”, but it’s closer to “turquoise blue” than navy or electric blue shade that Cap would go for. Even the shape of the box with a side frame and a clear plastic front reminded me of mid 70s packaging for girl’s tea party play sets. I think if it could be a metallic gray or textured “washed out” gray cardstock it would look much better and movie theme/movie posters accurate. So I personally didn’t get it, but many of you may still like it, usually people go for the contents, but I’m a bit “freaky” about packaging because I was designing packaging professionally.
The figure is good looking. It actually looks much better in hands than in photos (promo and the ones that I saw that other people posted and also mine). I loved the outfit and quality stitching for the jacket and pants (again, I’m very picky here because I do custom doll clothes), his pants actually look better and slimmer than in promo photos. This time I really appreciate that HT did a clear plastic wrap around his torso and neck to prevent staining from black fabrics. My Winter Soldier Buck has really bad stains all over the body, so that’s why I never bothered to remove his clothes or do any civilian ones, such a waste for a really great metal arm figure.
The CW Buck’s arm looks fantastic, it’s super shiny and the middle joint part is in metallic chrome as well, it bends and moves better, more easily compare to my Winter Soldier Buck. His boots are very detailed and well done, but of course my all time top favorite will be the WS Buck boots.
I loved the CW figure hair, I think it looks great around his face, it’s more realistic and the shade is great. But I definitely upset that I can’t replace his plastic hair with the real fiber hair like I did with my custom WS Buck, because it becomes a solid piece on his forehead.
The face paint is good as well, however I could easily go with darker eyebrows. I think HT did a better skin texture for the CW figure, but for me the full likeness isn’t there yet. I was comparing WS Buck and CW Buck and I still think that the “greasy” head has a better likeness than the CW head, especially the profile. I think the tip of his nose should be slightly thinner with a light hint of “triangle point” at the end; this is a big miss for a sculptor here, they keep doing it rounded and this is isn’t Seb’s nose. (IMHO) The other thing that bothers me is his chin. The proportions are off a bit because they did a longer chin and Stan’s chin is sharper, shorter and it has almost equal points between the nasal base and upper lip and the lower lip and the lower chin line (when he isn’t smiling). If you will measure these two points you will easily see that the CW Buck will get nearly the twice longer chin.
I totally loved his eyes. I know some people wanted more expressions for his face or extra head to do action poses, but let me tell you that under a certain angle the CW head has a very dramatic and serious expression, like his is about to do something, not just looking. It gives him a totally confident look, not the “head in clouds” one.
His accessories and extra hands are great, but again I wish HT would go an extra mile and did his arm removable, adding the damaged arm from the final scene. This was the most important and turning point movie scene and I could easily pay $249 or $275 for this figure if the extra arm would be included. Another thing that I really want to see in the future set is his metal hand without the glove, all his extra hands always have gloves, so to have one original metal hand would be really nice.
I don’t want to say that this figure isn’t great but for some reason it feels very basic and $199 price would be more appropriate in my opinion, I would give 8 points out of 10 for this figure. I’m still going to enjoy my CW Bucky figure and I know I will do lots of thematic photo-shoots but I definitely have big hopes for the future Buck as Captain and I would like to see something more exciting.
