I'm going to sell my SS R2 and get the HT version.
May even sell my Tamashii and get the eventual ANH HT 3PO too.

Here's that photo right way up:

Be really cool I'd Tamashii offered the TFA leg and arm for 3PO with their Diecast R2. Probably will hold off on the HT versions as the Diecast is really the grail to me. Already own the SS versions and Tamashii, so HT, unless they are truly one of a kind, will have to be a non buy.

That HT TFA 3PO just won't work for me as OT - fat torso (not as visible in that side pic), TFA printer-cable wiring, stubbier legs, thicker arms, plus it has TFA details - very minor, but noticeable to me.

And it amazes me that everyone freaked about the too-thick Tama pistons not being screen accurate, but here HT does pistons almost as out of scale and they get a free pass.:lol

Interesting that HT went for a similar size to the Tamashii figure for the arm pistons.

Dat damn SW scholar's influence stretches far & wide I see. :lol

Well, you gotta do something if you want a working piston.:dunno

SSC 3PO's pistons are screen accurate size, but only slide and aren't true pistons like HT and Tama. The articulation still works quite well on the SSC though.

The SSC R2 is a mixed bag - it's a great sculpt and the light-up feature works amazingly well (very easy to use too,) but there are panels/hatches which fall open too easily, and many people said that this and its light weight made it feel "cheap/plasticky." The paint apps also weren't great - and overall weathering spray just seemed to dull everything (dome especially) as opposed to specific weathering, and the HT sandies really shows what HT can do with weathering.

That being said, some isopropyl alcohol does an incredible job restoring a true metallic sheen to the SSC dome, and the weight/hatches thing is really a non-issue because the figure spends 99% of its time sitting on display.

The HT is a real metal dome and it looks truly superb, and the choice of blue seems closer to accurate. However its sculpt of the lights/"eye" area isn't quite accurate (SSC is much closer,) though probably not noticeable to the average collector. With metal dome, lights and sounds features, and the fact it's coming a couple of years later, the HT R2 will surely be noticeably higher in price than the SSC, likely around $200+ versus $150 (full retail - the SSC R2 can be easily had for cheaper than that.)

Also, Tamashii is supposedly finally going to release their (presumably full metal) version of R2D2 to go with their 3PO - another version to keep in mind.

That sums it up pretty well.

For me, the lights did not work so well for R2. In order to avoid the battery drain or leakage, I ended up using the on/off button inside the dome, so that was not comfortable anymore.

The accessories were quite a few with R2, that is something that Hot Toys will not do.

- If you want a ROTJ Jabba's sail barge version, or a ANH Ben Kenobi's house version, you may be better off getting the SSC R2.

- If you want a R2 that looks better overall, but it's not scene-specific, so far the Hot Toys R2 looks better IMHO.

In fact, I am in the second group, and I already sold my SSC R2 without a loss.
For me, the higher overall quality, die cast dome with no seams, those are deciding factors. If they improve scale, weathering, or other issues, even better.

It wasn't everyone. It was just Pixel over and over again.

What I find most amazing with the SSC R2 is that they somehow managed to include the "WOBBLY LEGS TM" on this figure for the price. The time honored feature that's present on most SSC releases. This one doesn't fall over though since it's not heavy enough and the feets are large. But it has trouble standing up straight under it's own power. Maybe a stand should have been included?

The SSC R5D4 I got for (relatively speaking) cheap was missing this feature however and is a much better figure for it.

Cause hot toys, brah.

Well, at least they're consistent with the R2 "headsculpt" being a bit off. We've gotten Richard Hatch as Han, Tom Cruise as Luke, a whistling gorilla as Chewy, and the guy I always see reading a newspaper at my Starbucks as Ben.

The HT Leia would seem a little out of place with the cast of Battle Beyond the Stars next to her, but thankfully they are in their SW outfits, so you can tell who they are supposed to be.:monkey3

Ben and Chewy look fantastic. Han and Luke are so so.

Oh, I love Chewy overall (I own TWO.) But if you pop off his head and look at it on its own, the face is all kinds of messed up. Non existent eyes, protruding beak, nearly black fur, weird drooly mouth. It's a stunning achievement in 1/6, a once-in-a-decade figure, but it also has a face only a mother black bear could love.

With a ton of work (as seen in the Chewy thread) and mostly irreversible mods, it can be brought up to a quite nice level - I just haven't gotten up the gumption to attack a $260 figure just yet.

And Ben? I love the hands and the outer robe, and the (mostly invisible) boots are a work of art. With the hood up and the lighting/angle just right, it's a passable Guinness, that's how I have him.:dunno

Richard Chamberlain goes to your Starbucks? Coool. :clap :lol

He does, yes.:lol

Well, I think you guys have convinced me to wait for more photos of this version before I decide. I'll probably end up going with Hot Toys unless the wait becomes unbearable (which I doubt it will).
