If the actual production piece by Hot Toys is as tall as the specs, it would be almost exactly as the SSC.

$220? HT can keep their overpriced but plug.

SS's looks fine on the shelf.

Sideshow's may look fine but there's no denying it's way too light (feels like a hasbro toy) with an ugly plastic dome full of seams and no Artoo sound effects. I'll gladly sell mine for this superior version. :)

for me, the biggest issue with SSC R2 is the seams on the dome.

Second to that, the scale.

Hot Toys, as it seems, is fixing only one of the two issues, and at a high price tag.

That may be true, but I'm not handling it all the time. :dunno

sound fx....that might work :lol

Yeah, people must really play with their figs. I've picked up that SSC R2 maybe three times since it arrived, so the hatches and lightness thing is a pretty much a non-issue. Other than the underscale issue - which does bug me - it really looks pretty great on display (though I did do a light wipe of rubbing alcohol to bring back the metallis sheen on the dome.)

And until they find a way to have all sound and lighting effects triggered by a single remote/smartphone, they really are a bit of a waste of time after the initial out-of-the-box play. There's just no easy way to use them frequently, especially if it's several lights/sounds figs in the display you're viewing.

And after the disaster that was the HT ANH Vader's sound effects (and lights had some issues too) I can't see how the HT R2 is going to be without some issues.

They can take the sound feature and stick it. Total BS if you ask me. They only implement it so they can ask more money.

R2-D2 NOW WITH POWERFULL SOUND FEATURES! KEEP YOUR CABINETS CLOSED BUT STILL HEAR THE AMAZING AUTHENTIC SOUNDS! NOW YOU AND CHILDREN CAN REALLY ENJOY THEM....FROM A SAFE DISTANCE!

Not that anything can break on it, since this R2 does not open. I was dissapointed by the weight of the SS one, but it has a lot of features plus a table with Leia. I don't play with it so I don't pick it up very much so the weight problem is pretty much non existant now. Although it looks pretty awesome...easy pass for me. These prices are getting out of hand. Soon collecting will only be for the rich. There will be no such thing as a collection any more since most people can only afford one. Pretty sure with the current oversaturation and the high prices the market will collapse at some point.

I was holding off on getting the SS deluxe because I knew this one was coming. I could have lived with the higher price and less accessories, but Q1 2018??? Screw that. I just grabbed an exclusive SS off eBay. I'll have an R2 for a whole year before this thing releases, and at worse I can reuse the SS accessories if I eventually cave and get the HT.

I Think we'll have this R2 up for grabs sometime this year. If you have a Tama 3PO then this would be the obvious choice IMO.

I will order eventually when i get a coupon but too bad it didn't end up being a 2-pack with C-3PO.

If Sideshow had simply provided a diecast dome and kept everything else the same, it would have made the Hot Toys version irrelevant.

We've got at least a year before the HT version ships so no rush to pre-order. I'll end up picking it up "IF" it's not smaller than the SS version and when it is discount code eligible.

Hot Toys Hong Kong website confirms this guy is going to be aprox. 180 mm tall. That's the same as Sideshow, if it's accurate.

Nah, these features are part and parcel of the action figure tradition of gimmicks. If any figure warrants a sound feature that nobody will ever use it's this one.

Agreed. I have no use for it, but it makes more sense here than with pretty much any other figure. Hell, I bought a 3 3/4" R2 once that had a noise feature built in.

I must admit, $220 for this is really hard to understand. I mean if it opened and he had all the tools, a projector beam that worked, the skiff tray from ROTJ and rockets from AOTC, I would still say $220 is too much.
