When i was 4, i was floored by esb, and then waited 3 years and talked about it with schoolmates about how the next film would end, and even at the ripe old age of 7, i felt the finale was pretty lackluster. In 3 years it looked like luke hadnt learned much at all except blocking blaster fire with his sword.

All he really did in the last fight was kick vader, and a backflip. At least vader threw his saber, but i never could figure out why he didnt just pull that walkway down using the force instead, i mean he threw a whole room at luke in esb.

Anyway, my point was that i had imagined something more epic.

Like RotS Mustafar duel epic?

I always excuse Vader's poor fight performance by his love for his son. He didn't want to kill him or injure more than he already did. He didn't want him to become same crippled monster. My two cents.

I dont know. I actually prefer the duel on naboo over that one. The mustafar scene is fine except for when they kick eachother, alec guiness could have pulled off a better kick...even today. :) if luke could have twisted im the air over vader lightsaber would have been pretty epic.

As much as i wish the rotj duel was better, its still leaps and bounds better than the anh fencing match. If lucas wanted to redeem himself he could have just taken out the special edition add ons, and replaced them with a cgi kenobi vader duel. The duel is even funnier to watch after almost a dozen star wars movies, they dont look anything like jedis when they fight in anh.

I still remember hearing about the special edition coming out, i was so excited. The very first thing my fellow nerds and i said to eachother was that lucas would fix the part where obi wans saber starts to go out in the middle of the fight....well i guess that was a sign of things to come.

Yeah that makes sense.

As far as jedi powers go, the silliest has got to be the saber throw. If youve played battlefront you'll probably understand why. It would be like a cowboy throwing his only gun instead of shooting at the bad guy in the hopes of killing him. However its fantasy man. :)

I never quite understood that scene with Obi Wan’s saber- I always thought it flickered out but then it seems to also maybe have just been the angle he was holding it. Lol any canon answer here?

Here’s an interesting YT video I watched recently discussing how powerful Vader was in R1, and theorizing why we didn’t see that same level of power in the OT, breaking down each saber duel in each film (ANH Kenobi-ESB Luke-RotJ Luke) as to what Vader’s strategy possibly was in each of those duels:

They’re as good as reason as any. I can personally buy and go with each one.

When Lucas made episode 4 he intended for the duel to look what it does, slow and cumbersome. What we see in r1 could easily been accomplished in 1977 but he made it to show that neither Vader or Obi Wan were jedis in their prime and lightsabers were suposed to be very heavy as medieval broadswords, not the flippy acrobatic tools we saw in the prequels - jedis in their prime and all that jazz

I don’t think there is any doubt Vader was just toying with Luke in ROTJ, and to a much lesser extent then ESB.

He was basically a place holder so Palps could work on his mind.

By the time Vader had to actually defend himself against a rage induced Luke drawing on the Dark Side, daddy Vader is WAY outmatched by a younger , angrier and more passionate Jedi.

My silliest force power is the the force jump....it looks stupid....

I always thought the Vader vs Kenobi fight was like two cobras fighting. Patience. Calculated moves. One mistake and you’re dead.

I always thought the Vader vs Kenobi fight was just the best Lucas could do on a tight schedule with reflective glow sticks for an old actor who didn't want to play and a guy who could barely see thru his mask.

I agree. I'm going to get the chair because I want to display him sitting on the chair with the royal guards. I'll move him around but mostly will be displaying him with the throne and guards. I'm thinking of looking in to Jazz Diorama sets and maybe picking one up if he makes a throne room one

He makes a throne room with and without a chair

Two sloths going toe to toe. In 1977, that was probably an exciting fight scene. Then again, pong was a thing back then so context is important.

I kind of agree with worgar, it was just the best they could do at the time. Luckily the rest of the film is pretty stellar even today, so i think we can give this scene a pass. At least it has spirit. But if the rots duel was like this it would have had people laughing so hard they would be falling out of their chairs.

This is probably closer to the truth. Not everything was thought through and calculated back then.

Any idea of what the Throne is made of?

I have the Sideshow Polystone one and was wondering should I upgrade?

I've ordered the figure only Emperor and thinking should I try to change my order.

Pretty sure this was discussed a while back. Consensus was that it probably wouldn't be polystone.

Does the sideshow one lightup ?

Bugger, I must have missed those posts.

No, the Sideshow stand is just solid Polystone. No light up features.

I have the Orginal release Vader with the Droid so I didn't see the new stand that came with the double pack.

I upgraded my stand to one made by Coco.

Throne will be ABS....without a doubt.

Probably light weight also.....

Being an old guy, I can tell you , at the time, lightsabers seemed:

Heavy as hell, and maybe gyroscopic when handled

Dangerous as hell....

Obi moved lightning fast in the Cantina, so speed was not really the problem.the fragile nature of the props limited the action. Plus , GL wanted more of an Erol Flynn type of sword play.

I think they also wanted what they were saying to each other to be the focus....not the sword play.
