Being an old guy, I can tell you , at the time, lightsabers seemed:
Heavy as hell, and maybe gyroscopic when handled
Dangerous as hell....
Obi moved lightning fast in the Cantina, so speed was not really the problem.the fragile nature of the props limited the action. Plus , GL wanted more of an Erol Flynn type of sword play.
I think they also wanted what they were saying to each other to be the focus....not the sword play.
That was carried through in TFA and to an extent in TLJ. But Johnson started to get carried away with the choreography in a Matrix-y way and that started to separate this from the OT. And obviously the PT did that way before too.
