This situation is actually unique - in ten years of being into 1/6 I've never seen a wonky proto suddenly be swapped out for a significantly better proto (with several key new elements) within a day or so. It's unprecedented.

Yes. And it wasn't just the Luke. Both Anakin and Obi-wan also looked pretty subpar. Anakin especially with his still at the tailor getting stiched just rolled out of bed after sleeping in his clothes look.

I am liking the look of this one (face aside), but I would really like it as a dagobah landing look so am hoping for an unhelmeted head sculpt and ungloved hands. So far I'm not seeing anything to suggest we will get that. I'd be giving the grenade and grapple gun to my SS Luke (and possibly the gloved hands holding them).

Yup this is crazy what just took place.

Yeah, really really weird. But like I said, hopefully two protos, one better than the other, shows a true development process so might mean it has a better chance of making it to PO. But then I would have said HT Luke Bespin V.2 from SDCC 2019 would have been an obvious PO yet nothing so far.

Really curious to see the grenade they have - there are two different grenades in the movie (the design clipped to Luke's chest as he's running below the ATAT which is also visible inside the snowspeeder cockpit, vs the design seen in his hand that he tosses into the ATAT - similar, but not the same) but the one in the HT Luke's hand seems noticeably smaller than either of those. Really hasn't been enough pics to show what it looks like.

Yeah, can't see much of the one he's holding. Really keen to see the full reveal (assuming this isn't just another in the long line of Star Wars teases that amount to nothing).

Wouldn't be the first time HT cheated and went undersized on an accessory. That'd be lame but it's not that hard to make a properly scaled one if that's critical for you.

Based on what we've seen, tweaks I'm hoping for are: helmet paint (rebel insignias correctly positioned, color more maroon vs red), better gloved hands (kinda weak sculpts,) and new webbing belts and knee bandolier (both look very, VERY Hasbro.)

Though the yellow clear visor shape is a bit wrong, the helmet sculpt overall looks great (they got the striped front cap of the mohawk better shaped/sized than Sideshow's) and the overall whiteness of the helmet looks better than that dull grey-yellow base color the SSC helmet has.

It would be great to finally get a 10/10 Rebel pilot helmet after all these years - other than the front cap of the mohawk, the Sideshow helmet sculpt is nearly as good as the HT helmet sculptwise, but that helmet is as much about paint apps (both accuracy and weathering) as it is about sculpt and the Sideshow paint is decent but not all that accurate.

I made a grenade and it was a VERY hard thing to build.:lol

I don't recall any rough HT prototypes, at least to the degree the first Luke was.

I'll have to think about it. Nothing Star Wars, but I want to say there have been some DC and Marvel figures that looked wonky at first.

And I don't even recall a lackluster/meh HT prototype turning out to be a stellar production figure.

ASM2 was literally the wrong material and finish. They changed it completely from fake shiny plastic to a more screen accurate fabric.

***EDIT: The Batfleck figures first shown were puffy and poorly defined, body was changed. The Advanced Suit Spidey was too bulky, body slimmed down.***

I've seen a few of the reverse - HT farmboy Luke head proto was better than the production version.

We all remember that all too well, I think. The ANH Han Solo portrait was changed as well, and while it gets a lot of flak I think it was still an improvement over what was shown.

My guess is that they sent SSC an earlier WIP because pandemics and political unrest have them behind the eightball.

So I'm really not sure where this "told you so" vibe is coming from.:dunno

:lol

Did anyone honestly think Hot Toys was going to ship what was on SSC's table?
-- no one has answered that question. I'm not trying to be snarky, it's an honest question. If that's what you thought was shipping, my bad -- but as annoying as Hot Toys has been getting lately, I would have been very surprised if that's what we got.

It clearly looked like a slapped together WIP , which it turns out it was. I didn't know what improvements would be made, but surely they were going to do so. :dunno

That's what I mean by 'over-reacting'.

Well it's gone from a meh to a pre-order if it happens.
Fingers crossed the face sculpt is a place holder, but I don't care if it isn't.

Wait for the Deluxe Version 2 with Dagobah accessories? Lols.

That is absolutely correct. It?s a unique situation and unprecedented. People were right to be wary with the prototypes Sideshow had on display.

The only explanation that feels plausible to me is COVID-19.

Perhaps Hot Toys was not expecting to showcase any prototypes physically in the US with everything cancelled. Sideshow?s virtual convention may have been organized without Hot Toys being informed well enough in advance to have multiple polished prototypes ready.

They could have sent either very rough prototypes, or quickly threw something together to send for the virtual convention.

I might be sold if it comes with Snowtrooper Base and plaque. When I am paying $350 for a figure I need a plaque. It’s how I roll.

Can you post a photo of it? I thought it'd be easy enough to model in Rhino and 3D print. As I recall you scratch built it?

***EDIT:
Found it. So now that someone intrepid like yourself has done all the work finding reference material and, I assume, getting the dimensions correct -- this doesn't look difficult to create a 3D file of -- just from what I can see. Not sure how it hooks on, that part could be annoying.

Would you please ask first before you're serving up my research/work for public distribution with a flippant "doesn't look difficult to create a 3D file of"? I mean WTF?

It was a nearly impossible item to find ref for - hours of digging through obscure sources - and took a LOT of work to make it look and function/hook right. That's the "work" I mentioned. Yet you say it's easy, then toss it out there with an inferred "he's done all the heavy lifting, so who's gonna copy it for me?"

Let ME post the pics and let ME decide if I want people to replicate my work or make casts of my work.:slap

Talibane: I apologize if that's how it came across. I was actually trying to be helpful, and wouldn't simply copy your work without asking you first.

It wouldn't even be possible because you're the one with the dimensions, and I actually thought it went without saying that you worked hard on it. Again, I apologize that came across the wrong way.

I know, a cursory web search turned up literally *nothing*.

To clarify: the geometry looked easy to model because it's concentric cylinders. I'm a 3D modeller. I use Rhino and ZBrush for jewellery design as I'm a trained goldsmith. I wasn't looking for someone to 'copy it for me' -- in fact I don't actually want the accessory for myself, I thought I was being helpful if a group wanted to replicate it assuming you were willing, because as I said: "So now that someone intrepid like yourself has done all the work finding reference material and, I assume, getting the dimensions correct..." ...as I typed that I assumed you would take the intent to be a commendation on your hard work. Obviously, I did not make that clear.

That was a photo you posted on a public forum and I thought it was obvious that it was your work, but okay, no problem.

I'm going to drop engagement on this topic now, unless you have anything else you'd like me to clarify.

You do understand the difference between a person posting pics of their work on a public forum for others to enjoy (in the collegiate context of SW 1/6 collecting/customizing,) and another person zooming in on a specific part that person's work and seemingly holding it up for the sole purpose of mass-producing it (either by others or they themselves) on a public forum though, right?

:dunno

I mean I've received lashings on this forum for even discussing the existence of bootlegged HT heads on eBay, yet it seems it's okay to use an individual member's own work for mass production simply because "hey, you posted it on a public forum." Seriously, if that's the case, I'll make my previous pics private and never post pics of anything I make on here again.

For the record, I had intended to make casts of my grappling gun available for basically free (just cost for resin) at the time I made these pieces, and would have done the same with the grenade if there had been demand (people didn't seem interested at that time.)

I have seen different looking prototypes from SDCC to whatever show is overseas a couple days later. Some with completely different bodies or HS so it's nothing new. They make various prototypes and ship them around to shows. Not a huge deal more interested in the final product.

I think in a pre-pandemic world the Tali/ZE kerfuffle wouldn't have escalated quite like it did just now. Maybe ZE can delete the pic from his initial post and all can be forgiven, don't think harm or a call for intellectual property theft was intended.

Yes, there are various copies of prototypes that make the convention circuit. But they’re usually somewhat consistent.

The two prototypes shown of this figure back to back at the two venues seem to be nowhere near the same quality. That’s the unprecedented part.

Its a quandary: part of me resents whenever people use other people's stuff for their purposes (in fact I get a little riled when people barf up: "what's the recipe") but then I also feel that "anything you post can be used against you in a court of law". If you want to keep something private, don't share on a public forum where it remains for life -- and literally shows up on google. Just send it privately to friends.

TaliBane and ZE both have always seemed like nice guys, i hope you all work it out. Tali nice custom stuff once again.

As for Luke the first one looked like poop, the new one looks awesome. I can't wait to shell out $325+ for it in 2023. Indeed a strange situation with two very different prototypes shown within 24 hours of each other.
