Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

Remember that those Hot Toys figures with all that military detail cost $70 not too long ago (less than 3 years). I think true costs have risen, but these companies also want to know how much we are willing to pay. I don't blame them. It's up to us consumers to decide though.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

HOT TOYS FOR SURE!!!

Sideshow puts out products that are more expensive than $120 that have crappy production quality (paint apps. mostly)

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

Yeah?

Well Hot Toys hasn't done ANYTHING so far from those licenses...few exceptions...

And since when did we get an Aura Sing figure?

Rambo is the greatest example of a property handled correctly.

Rocky is kicking ass as well...(not that I'm a huge Rocky fan, but to each his own).

True, we're still waiting for Dutch and company from "Predator"...but give it time.

And you're right---I'm thinking of Aylah Secura (? I get all of those obscure SW crap characters confused).

Touché....:duff

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

How many Rambo figures are there? Maybe they haven't released many poor choices (though I don't know why anyone would want HALO Rambo) but its hardly a testament to progressive handling of a license when your line has consisted of 5 figures in 4 years and 4 of them are the main character.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

Detail and quality are 100% subordinate to...

(...wait for it...

...is the suspense killing you yet?

...have you guessed?)

...price. :duh

No ^^^^! Really? You don't say. I'd happily pay more $ for SS figs if the quality was there.(and i hope with figs like general kenobi coming out that this is the case)And also if SS did make their prices like HT i still have doubts they have the talent to pull off the same types of figures like HT does.

But what exactly were the Endor troopers missing?

They're missing looking like a true 1/6 representation of the characters,(which they would've looked like if HT made them) instead they look like hasbro-ish "dolls"

This is all IMO of course.

While you do have a point, given Sideshow's track record with Star Wars, we would've gotten:

1. First Blood Rambo
2. Perverted Redneck Deputy that hoses Rambo down in the shower
3. Col. Trautman
4. Afghan Freedom Fighter
5. Stick-Fighting Taiwanese from Rambo III

Oh yeah....the 1 Rambo they would've given us would be built on that marvelous "Big Boy" body.........

What is not opinion is that it costs more to make a figure on the level of Hot Toys than it does on the level of Sideshow. What you're missing is that the people who like the Star Wars figures do not want to pay that much for them.

Your doubts that they lack the talent is pure speculation, and it flies in the face of grandslams like Ben Kenobi, et al.

Thats cool. But IMO the Endor troops look pretty darn good and are upgrades compared to the Bespin Luke and Han.

I agree with devil that the SW line isn't meant for super high end $120 figures. I think its undoubted that generic troops like the Endor guys would be either utter failures at $120+ each or they'd have to be cut to issue sizes of less than 1000.

SW is a mainstream license and its also one where many fanatics will purchase the oddball character.

SSC provides broader capabilities to meet that market. HT is too highend and too focused on main characters to meet the general needs of most SW fans, IMO.

( want to and will are different, LOL nobody wants to pay it, but would they if HT made them???)

I dunno guys maybe someone should make a poll asking if HT made SW figs would you pay for them.

hmmmmm.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

I think both companies are getting out of control on pricing right now. They are just testing to see how much they can milk the market.

Sideshow could learn a thing or two from Hot Toys for SW

I am a relative Hot Toys newbie. Joker V1 was my first Hot Toys figure. Now, TDK batman is my second. I must say, the jump in quality and realism from Sideshow to Hot Toys is greater than I had imagined. Even further surprising to me is that Hot Toys isn't that much more expensive, if you don't include the overseas ebay shipping charges from Hong Kong. I paid $135 for TDK batman before shipping.

Now that Sideshow figures have reached $100+ the premium that Hot Toys charges is almost negligible for the quality they produce.

On first look at TDK batman, a few things strike me as features I wish were available in Sideshow SW figures.

1) Stiff joints.

Posing and balancing TDK batman without a support stand is a breeze. This is such a stark contrast compared all of the Sideshow figs I have owned, including the latest Clone Obiwan.

2) Quality attire.

TDK suit screams quality when in hand. The rubber suit feels very strong and resilient to the touch. Even the gauntlets appear very stiff and yet do not feel brittle. The white armor on Clone Obi on the other hand feels light and hollow. It makes me worry one of the pieces is going to crack. Also, one of Clone Obi's wrist pegs came broken. I have a feeling the wrist pegs may give me more trouble in the future.

3) A cape without obvious stitch lines.

When Vader was announced back in July, one of the first things that struck me in photos were the distracting stitch lines that run up and down the cape, taking away the realism from the rest of the figure. As might be expected, TDK cape has the stitch lines hidden on the interior as they are for more caped figures.

4) Flexible boots.

Can you imagine if all of the SW figs had boots as flexible as TDK batman? Instead of the hard plastic boots that we have been accustomed to, the TDK boots are still very detailed AND completely flexible.

Sideshow still has a couple advantages. One of course is their heavy hitter Trevor Grove. I also prefer their figure bases over the oval ones Hot Toys provides.

What do you guys think?

Re: Sideshow could learn a thing or two from Hot Toys for SW

I would have to see them do the same version of the same character.

Hot Toys has always been the benchmark for accuracy of costumes and accessories.

My own experience with the 2 companies leaves me feeling that Sideshow is head and shoulders over Hot Toys in both customer service and durability in the product. Of my Hot Toys figures, every single one has a broken something on it.

My Sideshows? Only the Obi-Clone that Hot Toys helped make, and, interestingly enough, it was the mannequin, the very part that Hot Toys did in collaberation with Sideshow. And lets not forget how weak the joints are on that Hot Toys wonder-mannequin that is on Obi-Clone.

I'll take durability and a good representation over perfection likeness and a flimsy product every time.

So even though Sideshow could take a que from Hot Toys in the accuracy of the costume and accessories, Hot Toys could, conversely, take some pointers from Sideshow in the durability department.

Re: Sideshow could learn a thing or two from Hot Toys for SW

No offense but Vader doesn't have obvious stiches. Sorry just doesn't.

Justin man you have to be a big hit at kids b-day parties. :lol

Re: Sideshow could learn a thing or two from Hot Toys for SW

Hot Toys figures are great but Sideshow are the masters of so many other fields eg. PF's and statues.

Re: Sideshow could learn a thing or two from Hot Toys for SW

Been collecting HT and SS for 3 years now,

HT packaging blows SS out the window,

HT have as far as I can tell never missed a likeness on a headsculpt, SS has (even if it is slightly)

HT's quality of Clothing and accessories have always been on the nose, SS havent (Im guessing this is down to the level of detail)

Never had a quality issue for the most part with either SS or HT

then again

(historically) SS has been half the price of HT (thats recently changed)

SS's customer service is superb I cant buy direct from HT

SS's range is superb (although HT's offerings are just getting better)

Both have Pro's and Con's

However HT seem to be improving / keeping the same level of quality and price

Whereas SS seems to fluctuate in Quality and their prices are currently going up sharply !

If HT did Statues and PFs, they would probably own them too

i am signed up for Vader, and looking forward to it... but there is absolutely no denying that the stitching is obvious... not a deal breaker, but definitely there.

but this thread is about 12" figures...not PF or statues. maybe SS needs to back off their "other fields" to master one.

what you said!!!! i'd love noting more for HT and SS to have joint ventures on projects.

Re: Sideshow could learn a thing or two from Hot Toys for SW

I think Hot Toys 1/6 blow all others out of the water, in my opinion medicom is right beneath them. I don't care for any of sideshows 1/6. But god, do I love sideshow PF's. So I'm a fan of all 3 of them, together they all have something to offer.
