On my way out the door, but quick point of interest: just finished a body swap. The centre stormtrooper was a short one.

He resides on a Soldier Story body with the Hot Toys arms screwed on to the SS shoulders so the bicep armour would fit.

- he's extra tall
- slightly wider in hips and chest
- shoulders and arms can hang closer to torso
- armour is more 1977 style "wonky".

Haven't spent any time posing or futzing. I'll get back to it this weekend.

The Spacetrooper is that last wafer thin mint when you knew fully well, 30 minutues ago, that you'd already had way too much to eat.
It really is, but damn, what a cool exclusive. I've cancelled my Scout Trooper and Bike b/c of all these Stormies, as a way to even the scales. :p

I've always said, this forum is full of enablers!
Too true, Darthrazz! :lol Just ordered about 5 minutes ago and glad I did. It's one of those things I'd probably regret if I didn't order, once the in-hand pics come out.

:rock nice work, I like how close the arms can rest against the body.

Thanks (and thanks to you too, Yankee).

Getting those arms to hang naturally sells it, IMO.

One of the very few criticisms this release has had was reference to it appearing "toy like".

Weathering aside, posture is everything. In all fairness, Hot Toys made a similar mistake to Sideshow. They seem to have been concerned with creating the figure as a whole; perhaps neglecting the concept of armour *hanging* on a *human* frame.

The body swap with arm transplant is not difficult per se, but tedious. I do think it's worth it.

My airbrush has arrived so I'll begin repainting Marmit stunt buckets this weekend. I think when completed, that will push this figure over the top.

I'll update the work in progress.

Here's our first proper look at the new ST stormtrooper.

Can't wait to see the HT figure. Wallets are about to explode!

Brings back memories of looking at promotional photos before every film came out, and imagining what the characters and scenarios were going to be like.

So far I like the new design. Classic ANH and OT troopers in general remain unbeaten of course, but I think I like this design better than the clonetroopers.

I've actually never owned a clone collectible. There is a chance I'll snag one or two of these ST troops, particularly if I really enjoy the film.

Tie fighter not sure if concept or fan art
Digging it though
The part on top is some sort of drop down visor face plate

I decided to pull the trigger and get the Hot Toys Stormtroopers. Not sure if I want two tall ones or the two pack?? I can always port the shorter one to a taller body correct? I'm thinking of displaying Vader in middle flanked by one stormy on each side. How would that look with a short and tall trooper???

I just did. Even the short body-suit stretches out with no problems on to a tall body. If you look further up the thread I posted a short-to-tall conversion that's actually a little taller than the stock tall trooper. No problems with fit.

It depends on whether you want an asymmetric display with that imperfect 1977 film vibe, or if you're looking for more of a "promotional photo"/idealized look, in which case you probably want symmetry with two tall ones.

It complicates things further in that all 1/6 Vaders appear over-scaled, in which case you may want to port both troopers to even taller bodies to avoid proportional problems modding Vader.

I went to take a shot of my ssc, marmit and ht together, totally forgot how floppy sideshows is not just the body everything lol. Time to swap out the marmit body and the both will be very compatible but mr floppy back of the shelf

I should probably create an HT stormtrooper customizing thread; but anyway...for those interested, here is what I found:

ARMOUR
The armour is difficult or impossible to shape. I experimented with boiling water on a bicep piece and found that temperature that high won't create any significant flex. I also found that the paint job is surprisingly durable...I full expected to crack or discolour the paint during the experiment, but the best I could do was create some very fine crazing in the finish that's very difficult to see.

BODY
My favoured trooper body is the Soldier Story S2. I would try other HT bodies but the cost is prohibitive. Anyway...as mentioned, the S2 body is wider in the hips and chest, and probably has broader shoulders. The joints are not as tight as HT but tight enough to hold any pose and have some ratcheting action.

The arms have too much girth to fit the HT bicep armour over, and possibly the forearm bracers although I didn't try. That leaves two options, grinding the plastic, which is a pain and messy as I've had past experience with how durable that S2 plastic is...or an arm transplant.

Both the HT and S2 bodies have similar arm/shoulder assemblies with differences in shape and internal components that do essentially the same thing. All you need to do is transplant the Hot Toys arm and shoulder piece. It looks ugly but under armour and suit you won't see it at all and it works very well. You need a couple of precision screwdrivers for this...slot to pop the screw covers off (don't know why they bother with those) and Phillips to remove the screws.

This is what enables the arms to hang close to the body and really the point of the whole body swap, although there is the added bonus of having the armour hang a little less "perfect" which sells the realism more, IMO.

The S2 barbell joint (double ball joint) will fit the HT stormtrooper boots when you remove the S2 feet. It's slightly shorter but it doesn't matter because the body is taller on the whole and it doesn't affect articulation.

The one thing you will notice is that the S2 shins allow the shin armour a lot of play. You can use foam to pad that out if it bothers you.

UNDERSUIT
As mentioned above, the "short" suit may or may not be different but has plenty of give and fits a tall body easily.

I banged out this body swap in a hurry; I'll probably do it again and post photos next time.
