Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

Not in love with the sculpt but will get him anyway to be my EU Luke. I might get one of the other old Luke headsculpts if this doesn't improve in hand. I'll have to figure out something for the light up saber hand. If I don't just sell it outright; how hard do you think it would be to swap the Saber?

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

Very glad to see that HT is going to let this figure see the light of day, but that head sculpt is in serious need of some changes.

Do the actors have to approve the sculpt prototypes before HT goes forward with it? If so, does anyone know if Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher's estate get to tell them to de-age the sculpt or change certain features to be more flattering?

I have a hard time believing that HT sculptors can nail older actors on figures like TFA Han, Dooku, and Tarkin - yet would produce idealized versions of this Luke and TLJ Leia on accident. This seems intentional, but I have no idea why it would be.
Hot Toys has different sculptors that handle different projects, so it's normal to see differing levels of accuracy from sculpt to sculpt.

Sadly, I feel a handful of figures revealed (or released) over the last year have disappointing likenesses. Rey and Neo come to mind.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

I’ve really come around to disliking The Last Jedi despite liking it the first couple times I saw it. I have the other Luke on pre-order already and this might be the only other figure from the film I consider getting. I’ll probably wait a while to pre-order though.

I still love the movie but admit it's not one I feel like rewatching as much as TFA for some reason.

If they nailed the sculpt i might have picked it up and just pretended he was Luke from Expanded Universe... but they didn't... Oh well, original trilogy is still the best for me... maybe if i can grab it for a huge discount later i might...

Your right, maybe get the old hermit head sculpt and put on this one... but i'm sure there will be lots doing that so i can see how it turns out before ordering...

My main hatred of it stems from how poorly Luke was handled. Just inexcusable what Johnson did with one of the most iconic characters of all time in my opinion.

There’s other stuff that drags it down too though like Finn and Rose on the casino planet and the fact that Holdo’s plan is pretty stupid and pretty much serves only to move along the Finn/Rose plot and to teach Poe a lesson.

It's a nice figure. Was there ever an explanation why Luke didn't have a green Lightsaber for his projection?

I suspect it was to tip us off that he was a projection since the blue lightsaber was destroyed earlier in the film.

He looks like Mark Hamill and Rian Johnson merged a bit... :lol

Their poorest Luke sculpt to date. Hobo Luke is better

Cause RJ is a genius. It's a smart movie for smart people. A reward for those who saw the lightsaber handle he was holding while thinking.."Didn't Rey & Kylo just destroy that while force fighting over it?". Which then leads to the Aha, GOTCHA! moment. Luke isn't real! Also the hints with no red footprints in the snow, I mean salt, covered ground. All those dumb fans that thought Luke was actually there!! Cinema gold.

Also at the same time, Luke does a smackdown on Kylo for being stupid and also not realizing/questioning how Uncle Luke was using the lightsaber I just destroyed??

Just pure genius. Doesn't make any sense, just genius.

Greatest Star Wars scene ever. I mean, after the Hoth Walker scene in ESB, just original genius.....

I sense a hint of sarcasm in that post... ;)

Anyway, I think it was less to be clever and more just because he wanted to use the lightsaber with more of a history to it and which had a greater connection to the Skywalker family.

The reason stated by the filmmakers was that all of Luke's appearance was designed to make Kylo angry enough that he wasn't thinking clearly, and was thus less likely to realize Luke's sudden appearance is a ruse. In the case of the lightsaber, Kylo feels that the lightsaber is rightfully his, since he thinks he is the inheritor of Vader's legacy and the lightsaber was originally Anakin's. We saw in TFA that he was angry when he saw someone else wielding it, so the same reaction would hold here, only intensified since the wielder is Kylo's most hated enemy. Kylo also probably doesn't know the lightsaber was destroyed because he was knocked unconscious by the blast (Luke also has no way to know the lightsaber was destroyed).

The other, unstated reason is probably to tip off the audience that something is amiss.

So says the god of trickery....lol

Other than being a tip off, it's symbolic for Luke because he's rejected the saber twice in the film when Rey offers it to him prior. It's him accepting the saber and his status/mantle of Luke Skywalker, the legend. I also like that he is ending his journey with his father's lightsaber, the one he started it with.
