They are both toys though.

Hot "Toys". As in, they make "toys". I mean, it says it in their name. One is very expensive, and the other not as much.

But it doesn't change the fact that they are.... I feel like I'm repeating myself here.

fran... you are repeating yourself!! problem is, no one is listening or everyone disagrees with you! seriously man, no disrespect meant, just sayin that it sounds like most don't share your opinion regardless of a name or the product or the nature of the item or the original design intent etc... quite a lot of people that are in this hobby purchase these items to set in a single static position and then place them in glass cabinet, never to be touched again until they sell them. most would quantify that as a collectible statue regardless of what it is at the core (collectible figure).

also, try this on for size...
my old man was given a very expensive tag heuer watch as an award for kickin azz at his job several years ago. he's since gotten very ill and doesn't go out much. he gave me this watch last year as a birthday present with a very meaningful letter of being a proud parent and wanted to pass the watch on to me... guess what...? that's not a watch to me. not even close!

the wife has a stuffed toy in her closet facing down at you... dog of some sorts i think... her old man died from lung cancer several years ago and gave it to her prior. i can see it in her eyes that it still tears her up inside. guess what my friend... that's not a toy no matter what you wanna say or how many times you say it!

i had the latest shelby gt500 sitting in the garage. didn't move much. only came out for the occasional 1/2 hr cruise and the quite often car wash then back in the garage not being touched. guess what... that's not a car...

your eyes you see a watch, a doll and a car...
me... its a keepsake, a treasure, and a toy!

Not discussing that anymore. It's just the fact that both the MP10 and this HT OP are great looking toys in their own right. Ok, pieces. What I was getting at was that both are great interpretations of OP, one doesn't have to look cheap in order to justify the other's price tag. To flat out call MP 10 a cheap toy and this one a collectible makes no sense when this forum is about toys. Even my Ultimetal Prime is a DAMN FINE TOY to me.

That's what they both are by definition. Or whatever you want to call them, it's fine with me. As long as you are happy. It's just funny to read people comparing two products in the same category, believing one is different from another. Maybe in price, yeah.

Personally, the only time I can use the word treasure, is when referring about my son, but I guess I'm crazy. To each its own.

All my guests say that I have nice toys. I take that as a compliment and not something to debate. I'd rather drink.

Does anyone know/think there will be other versions of this down the line?

For example they might do a more cartoon style paint job version or same as the current one but without the Starscream parts.

Honestly the MP 10 shouldn't even come into discussions with this figure in my opinion. It makes no sense? Other then using it as a size reference because people are familiar with it, you're trying to compare apples and oranges!

To each his own is exactly right! If someone were to reply to your post and say something along the lines of "it always makes me LOL every time I hear someone refer to their kids as treasures... never fails LOL!" Or get it through your head people children are not treasures they are just kids! Wouldn't your response be something along the line of what's the point of saying that etc? Point is it was criticizing something because it differs from your opinion!

I don't have kids... So i don't get the treasure thing... But sure wouldn't wanna put a negative spin on it because you do!

Oh and I don't have kids because I have too many toys and drink too much! ;)

If he chooses to view the world so black and white, it's his loss.
You can't convince a brick in a wall that it's part of something greater.

any who, I wasn't too excited for this figure, but after seeing Optibotimus review it pushed me towards it and I was able to pick him up off Evil bay for about $280. I decided eh why not. Can't wait to have this guy in my hands.

I said MP-10 looks like a cheap toy when displayed next to the HT. That's different than just calling it a cheap toy. It's that the MP-10 is dyed molded plastic, with chromed parts and simple and very limited paint applications. While the MP-10 looks closer to the G1, it is for that exact reason it doesn't stand out in a display. The G1 Optimus was a cheap toy, and the MP-10 looks very similar to it. The HT would never be confused as a G1 toy.

If we polled 100 non-collectors to say which look more impressive when posed side by side in a display, I think 99 out of 100 would pick the HT. It just looks way more impressive when displayed. It's got great shelf presence!

Ok... So prototype of his G1 styled blaster is ran...

Thoughts on the size??

Here are a few pics

With HT blaster...

With orginal MP10 blaster and the KFC oversized blaster...

Going to add a couple small details then run a high quality print and see how it looks painted...

Right well I have just got back from the shop with my Optimus.

Here is what sold it for me - I am a general collector of things pop culture and things from my childhood. Therefore, wanted one Optimus Prime to display as a robot.

The MP10 was huge potential buy for me until I saw the Hot Toys version.

The reason I went Hot Toys is because it looks like a professional adult orientated high end collectible. Only wanting one Optimus pushed me towards going for something that when people see it will go wow and I felt the Hot Toys version ticked that box.

The MP10 looks great but is more toy like and a lot smaller. Owing to how I collect I want thing to pop out from the shelf at me.

My only general concern about buying this was possibility of Hot Toys re-releasing it with cartoon accurate paint BUT I have to tell you the paint job on him is incredible - it looks natural and that the distress/dirt should be there. Really gives it a life like appearance.

The only other one I would consider is Megatron and possibly Sound Wave. The big issue though is actually getting them. Hot Toys have a terrible reputation for sometimes bailing on lines too soon.

It honestly looks too large too me, otherwise it looks great.

Looks awesome! You offering this as well? Can you post a reference pic or two?

it's kinda what i was shooting for with the design... a little oversized. i kept the same OD that the HT cannon had, but i'll more than likely shrink down the diameter a tad of the cannon.

Here's a link to the pics I posted of TF001 with an Mp-01 blaster for comparison:

Yea I saw your pics... my design is pretty close to length of that, but bigger OD on the cannon.

Looks awesome! You offering this as well? Can you post a reference pic or two?

Thanks!
I'll have some available when I'm finalized on the size / design. Hoping to have close to finished product this week for review.

So is this figure worth getting? I don't care about it not transforming. I have 4 MP-10's. I do wish he was more G1 accurate and had his original gun but i love the paint app.

A lot of people have said he feels "cheap" for the price tag though. Is that true?

If you consider it somewhat light in-hand to be cheap, then I'd pass. That's the only way it feels cheap to me. I wish it had more weight in the legs, but it doesn't really bother me.

I'd wait for a deal. He's definitely good looking as an artistic interpretation of Prime for sure.

But the price is truly insane. There will be deals, obsessed collectors are always selling brand new figures because they realize that bills don't wait and they can't bear the thought of a divorce.

I'm waiting.

Patience.

There are actually a couple of regulars on eBay for around $275 shipped. Still way up there though.
