I don't think Hamill can fight anymore. They did what they could with him imo.
Him fighting anything would've been awkard. And i REALLY didn't want to see a cgi Luke flippin' around like Yoda or Sidious in the PT. That would've killed it for me.
In the end he looked solid and inspiring in front of the people he loved. That's what they needed to see at that specific moment.
Luke's beard color is a really weird thing. Why does he have a grey beard in reality, but a black beard in his force projection (like in the flashback to the Kylo attempted murder)? Can you "augment" your look as a force projection? Like you can give yourself a bit of a nose job and major abs?
It'd be great for Jedi dating. You show up at the restaurant as a force projection, and the woman is like "wow, he's hot!" but your physical self only shows up later in the evening (after a few wines and in the dark) when you definitely want to be physical you, not force projection you.
It was probably meant for Leia and Kylo to see him as they remembered him the last time they saw him, some 5 or 10 years ago. I found it funny that he would have took the time to stop at the barbershop while getting to Crait, since he wasn't looking his best on Ach-to!

They could have done like with Count Dooku... Christopher Lee was obviously not the one fighting but the overall effect was pretty good.
I had reservations upon the first viewing, like many I was disapointed with the Luke treatment, but reading many comments like this one made me change my mind on how I was perceiving it. I kinda want to go see it again now.
I think the fact that Luke died was the biggest blow. Once you accept that it becomes easier to swallow. Obi-Wan died in the first movie but that didn't stop him from being my favorite character... Should be the same for Luke. At least for me.
I'm kinda hoping HT will release a force projection Luke now.
What I'm saying is that people are making out as if OT Luke was a pacifist with daisy chains in his hair attending anti-war rallies, when that's 180 degrees from the truth of OT Luke.
People just saw the TLJ incarnation and are retconning in their minds what Luke actually did in the OT.

That's because he was conceived by Disney and Johnson from start to finish as a defeated, depressed hermit who had given up. If Liam Neeson can do it at the same age, then Hamill could have worked out and kicked *ss. Instead they gave him hobo clothes, told him to grow a grey beard (well, sometimes black and sometimes grey) and act like they don't have Prozac in the SW galaxy. Or... maybe that's what the sea cow udder was for...
You're mistaking what Hamill was told to do by director and script with what Hamill was actually capable of.
Out of principle, I don't go near troops lol. I'm strictly Skywalkers and Dark Side Users. It helps me focus my collection to what I really like.
Yes! Having a Snoke with Kylo would be amazing. But he's going to be huge. He's supposedly 7-8 feet tall in the film. My display is going to be Kylo, Luke, and Snoke. Still on the fence about Rey. Leaning towards no.
Having the old trio in a display would be great. It's just so sad that they couldn't reunite together. I'm hoping we see Luke's reaction to the news of Han's death. It's going to be a heartbreaker. Same with Luke and Ledia reuniting. They have to give us that.
I just think it's a bit silly to expect a 60-70 year old Luke to still be the exact same optimistic guy we last saw when he was in his 20s. Most people tend to change as they get up around that age, and perhaps get a bit more quirky or crotchety. And I wouldn't expect that to be any different for Luke.
Its not about what is realistic. It is about what is a satisfying arc for a character who is a central heroic figure in cinema. Star Wars is all about inspiration, iconography, and a hero's journey. Deconstructing it and telling us none of it is real shouldn't have a place here. Luke deserved to be the Grand Master Jedi we wanted him to be. No one went to this series hoping Luke was unrecognizeable. And this film wouldn't be receiving nearly the backlash it is if they had honored that.
I agree that it was in his character to react that way. I actually enjoyed it when he did that. Doesn't anybody remember when he tossed his lightsaber away in front of the Emperor?
Luke used his "legend" status that he referred to in the movie itself & exploited it to fool the First Order & Kylo Ren. It was a selfless last act & worthy of recognition in the archives of the Jedi.
I largely thought it as a whole was boring. I'd rank it just above TPM and AotC. After the scene with Leia in space, I largely tuned out of anything else that was happening in the film outside of the Luke-Rey-Kylo triangle. That I thought was fine and were the only interesting characters, but literally every other character in it (outside of Leia just because of her connection to Luke) I felt was largely pointless. Finn was pointless, Rose pointless, I guess that's it for Phasma, and Snoke turned out to be pointless as well. While the concept of a casino planet would fit in the SW Galaxy, the execution of it made it seem like it was something out of the Fifth Element, and everyone there was dressed the way you'd expect to see people dressed as if it were a casino on a cruise ship. I also thought there was too much forced humor, but some parts, it was fine. When Leia first met "Luke" and she made the remark about her hair, I thought was fine. Two siblings just ribbing each other. Also Chewy's ongoing battle with the Porgs I thought was genuinely funny as well and fine, very Chewy-esque.
Luke was the hero of the film, both in it and as far as making this film remotely interesting. As far as his character goes, I found his arc to be interesting and his actions and behavior I thought were consistent with the OT. At the end of the OT, he was the hopeful and bright, a newly christened Jedi who thought he had eradicated all evil for good and was going to rebuild the Jedi and there would be sunshine and rainbows. Despite him defeating Vader, it makes sense that Luke still had much to learn. And what he found out, scared him. However, the Luke that was the hero of the OT returned at the end of this film and was the hero again.
I personally liked the way he passed away in the film, peacefully on his own terms while still being the hero. I wouldn't have wanted to see Luke get struck down or defeated, or even voluntarily struck down like Obi-Wan. I do wish he would have made it to Episode IX and then passed away much in the same manner, but I still really liked his character in this film and as I mentioned, found him, Rey and Kylo to be the only interesting things about it.
Luke, Rey and Kylo would be the only figures I'd get from this film. Already have the first two on PO, but will pass on Kylo as I like his TFA look better and liked the film much better.
I will get a luke from this film just waiting to see what other versions HT puts up. I have the TFA Kylo, Stormtrooper Finn, Han and Rey but will most likely pick up the TLJ Rey also.

I couldn't agree more with your take on the casino planet. As presented, it just didn't fit well at all in a Star Wars movie. I'll likely be skipping those scenes when I watch this on BluRay. Also agree with you about the forced humor. I don't know how anyone involved in making this film could feel that Star Wars had been in some way suffering from not having enough laughs/gags in the past. Perplexing.
The Canto-bite stuff would have been far more acceptable if it was cut in half time wise and contained to one or two cutaway from the main arc. I actually didn't find it as offensive as many people seemed to warn it to be. I just thought it overstayed its welcome.

Not defending the film or what they done with Luke because I hated it too! But, I couldn't disagree with your statement more. People DO change! Life takes its toll. Life experiences, the people around us, the things we see and learn, they all change us.
Luke failed. He lost Ben Solo. He failed his promise to Leia, the person he loves most.
Unlike all the Jedis in the prequels, Luke started his training very late and (almost) alone. He's a Skywalker, very impulsive by nature. So you get a loner Jedi who tried his best to rebuild the Jedi Order all by himself and he just didn't make it.
Loner impulsive guy + double failure = intense remorse/guilt
That's Luke right there. The same Luke Yoda didn't want to train in ESB. He didn't change a bit.

Yup. This is a good explanation. People most definitely change after significant emotional trauma. Anyone saying otherwise must have had a pretty carefree life.
Quite possibly the dumbest post I've ever read. Characters changing is literally the focus of countless movies. Hell, have you never heard of Han Solo or Darth Vader?
