Here is my real fur Chewie created by the same guy who did Wor Gar's and Hurricane's

Is it okay to ask ball-park figures of what these customs cost? If that question is out of line/too nosey feel free to disregard :monkey3

Another shot. Sorry my pics are not as good. I can only post something up to 95kb.

I picked mine up in an ebay auction. I paid about $225 shipped roughly. I have no idea what wor Gar or Hurricane paid. Mine was an ebay bidding war though that I had every intention of winning LOL.

It's a nice looking fur application, but in my opinion it's just a nice looking big foot, without Han or the bandolier, nothing about it stands it out as Chewie and not just a furry animal.

Not Chewie? Have you even seen Star Wars? :chew

Thats not a terrible price at all... especially considering how awesome it looks and the amount of work that would have to go into it :google And I agree, looks a lot like Chewie :chew :chew

If Sideshow can make the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Jabba, they can make Chewie. They just need a two piece fur coated suit (similar to the creature's design). The only problem I see is the head. If they go sculpted, it wouldn't look right with the fur body. The heads would almost certainly have to be made by hand and inspected by several different people several times. It can be done though. I actually expected to see Chewie before Jabba (who I thought was too large to be made).

Plus they can also make a Bigfoot/Sasquatch and a Yeti/Abominable Snowman while they are at it. Kill 3 birds with one stone right? :D

I'm fairly new to collecting Sideshow. Is/are there any pictures of what this Creature from the Black Lagoon's suit looked like?

Yes as a matter of fact I have watched it religiously for 19 years and to me this figure:
DSCF0041-2.jpg

doesn't achieve Chewbacca's look and comes off like just a furry figure. The look I want from an SSC Chewie is this:
2a.jpg

which I don't think a fury figure, for the 1/6 line, would achieve, maybe at the PF level, but I'm concerned with a 1/6 version and to me, sculpted like GG did, while it may look awkward or not gravity compliant for some poses, will be a better route to achieve the look.

I chose fur, but to me, the question is wrong. Instead of voting for what we would "like" to see Sideshow do, it should have been what do we "believe" Sideshow can do and look good. I would like to see Sideshow do the fur, but I don't believe they can pull it off in 1/6th scale. So the poll is a little skewed... in my opinion.

The poll isn't skewed, you could do two polls. I responded with what I thought would be best given current precedents. If i were to vote on what I'd like to see Chewie made with in an ideal world, then I would say fur all the way given that they could shape the hair to be shaggy like it is.

Well the poll question is "Choose how you'd like to see Sideshow make Chewie!!!". I think we would all "like" to see Sideshow use fur. As I mentioned in another thread, I have a fault of being too literal, so to me the question is skewed.

I have to agree as well... As nice as a fully furred Chewie would be... I just don't see it happening with SSC. I CAN see a rubber sculpted suit or an entirely sculpted Chewie....

At least IMO..

Why not both? They're both valid solutions to a neverending problem. I DON'T want to "futz" around with Chewie's face fur - that's part of his personality, just as head hair is sculpted on human figures, otherwise rooted hair would be a mess.

Okay...here's a quick collage of Chewie as featured in the discussion...

Here we can get an idea of what works with a sculpt and what works with fur...

The sculpt...while Gentle Giant (D) manages a fine representation of Chewie, the issues with a sculpted figure could be limited articulation and a rather stationary figure (pose/display-wise)...great for a bust, not so great for a figure [see Hasbro's attempt (C)]...

Now the "fur" question...while as both Hurricane and Wor-Gar's fine looking figures (A & B) show, a well-rendered figure is possible with fur,,,the biggest drawback to both of these examples for me is...the face. It's just not quite there [although it's closer to the DK photo (F) than the studio publicity still (E)]. One interesting thing about Hurricane's example...it looks more like a wookiee warrior from ROTS...bulkier, broader-faced, a bit more blond...in fact, if he could rustle up some ROTS-style bandoliers and accessories, it'd be spot on!

The other issue with fur is...as mentioned early on in the thread by Custommike, expecting the consistant craftsmanship from a factory for the kind of quality shown in these custom examples is a tough sell. I'm all for "futzing" with the final product, but I still think getting a figure with fur that has any decent quality is going to be an expensive proposition...

As others have alluded to here...I wonder if a "furred" version of Chewbacca might be better served as a PF figure, and Sideshow takes a stab at the "sculpted suit" approach for the standard one...

Just stirrin' the pot, folks....:chew

I think Chewie is going to need a sculpted rubber undersuit. This would give him the correct bulk and muscles, etc. He would then need a sculpted face. The suit will be put over the articulated figure. Hair then needs to be applied to the suit as it was to the real Chewie suit. The face then needs hair attached to it somehow. Perhaps the head should be a mask that goes over a real figure head? I think the only way to get a Chewie to look like Chewie is to make him just like the costume was made (at least as much as possible).

Personally, I'd rather sacrifice articulation for a method that gives us the most accuracte representation of the character in 1/6 format, so for me, sculpting is the way to achieve that, I'd love to get something like this:
