Actually Will Smith is very well respected by the critics and much of the movie going public. He's a smart action star a little like Harrison Ford, but with more humor. His offscreen antics haven't made him laughable like Cruise and he's not a cardboard cutout like Arnold. I'm looking forward to this film as are many people it seems.

:lecture Well said... I like Will Smith as an actor and i think this movie is gonna be great, really looking forward to it.

I agree that Will Smith is a talented actor.................... in the right role.

Lets be honest here. its near impossible to not associate him with Fresh Prince & comedy as a whole.
I think he tries to deliver and does a good job in serious roles, and its not really his fault, its just his past roles in over the top comedies that will be stuck with him forever.
and because of that, I dont really care to see him in very serious roles and I wish they wouldve cast someone else for this one.

I REALLY wish Hollywood would recognize great stories that dont need famous faces to make it a hit. I think the famous stars can distract you from recognizing just how good some films actually are (can be).

So this is a film based off of Richard Matheson's story "I Am Legend"!!! I actually just finished reading it about two weeks ago and thought it would make a great film and lo and behold it has been made into a film! I found the book lacked in some areas (it seemed too rushed at times...especially the ending) but hopefully the film will flesh some things out. This is very exciting. "I Am Legend" is a niffty little story with a great twist at the end.

I can't wait for the film but I agree that another actor would perhaps have been preferable-- I think the suggestion of Clive Owen is bang on... Ewan McGregor... Kevin McKidd (Lucius Vorenus in HBO's ROME)...

Will Smith for the 25+ age group will always be associated with the Fresh Prince and although the action explosion happened with Independance Day and Bad Boys for me anyway he's never really pulled me in as rooting for the struggling protagonist. His portrayal of Ali (bumba yea) was good but I'd prefer a lesser "box office" star and a true actor who's going to pull me in over the TOM CRUISE dynamic (name on the marquee).

Regardless, the film visually looks good. Hope it maintains the literary dimension. Can you imagine Ahhhhhhhhhnold in this?

I agree. Will Smith is and always will be the Fresh Prince to me, but I like his movies and he has proven himself to be a good actor.

I am looking forward to this.

this movie is gonna be good. i like will smith as a person because he's a great person. but... he's been pretty hit or miss the past couple of years with the roles he tries. this being said i would like to see Linus Roache play this character. he's the type of character i pictured when i started reading this book.

:lol True about Ahhhhhhhhnold. Though he's a little old now.

But "I am Legend" is not a zombie story. Unless the story has been changed into one for the film. That would make me incredibly sad if it's been changed from Vampires to Zombies. :monkey2

Its funny reading these comments about Will Smith not outgrowing his fresh prince roots when we have Tom Hanks that started in Bosom Buddies and Bachelor Party winning acadamy awards.

Yeah. Ummm ... thanks for that spoiler, there, buddy.

As for those who refuse to let go of Will Smith's past, saying that his roles in over-the-top comedies make it impossible to see him in any other light ... ladies and gentlemen ... I give you ...

... two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks.

In Smith's defense, I've seen him in his most recent film, and believe me when I tell you that he can play subdued intensity with some of the best of them. He's got it. And I think he'll likely prove it to those willing to give him a chance in this roll. So don't count him out just yet. :lecture

Aw, bugger me backwards. I just saw this after my last post. Sorry. :lol

Sorry. I didn't know that aspect of the story (that's 99% part of the story right from the first 2 pages of the story) was some kind of surprise. Furture trailers and posters will more than likely show what the basic players in the movie will be. Sorry if knowing who/what will be some of the main players has spoiled you...there really is far more good things in the story besides knowing that.

Plus the fact that it's Vampires not Zombies is not the twist in the story.

I really do apologize though.

Tom Hanks is in a completely different league IMO. And thats why he can pull it off.
and Im not slamming Smith. He's an awesome actor.. but comparing him to Tom Hanks? thats a good one :lol

Ah, don't sweat it. I'm just tired and grumpy.

Uh, you all know that this was a movie before with Charlton Heston, right? The Omega Man?

And the vampire/zombie thing - I wouldn't think it was a spoiler as the other movie has been around for 40 years - what's the moratorium on spoilers?

I just found out about the previous films "The Omega Man" and "The Last Man on Earth" yesterday. I'd heard of them both before (never have seen them though) but didn't really know what they were about. Now I'll have to see 'em.

They're using pretty much the same tag line:

I wasn't comparing Smith and Hanks as actors, just circumstances, although anyone who ever saw Bachelor Party never expected Tom Hanks to turn into Tom Hanks. Not that its not a classic film because no one can forget "Remember girls back by 12 or Milt cuts your balls off!"

I liked the book, don't think I'll like the 3rd movie they made of it.

Also, Will Smith sucks, always and forever. "Well Respected" who cares? My balls are well respected by a few certain people, does that mean they're REALLY worth anyone else's time? NO! I hate that argument. I mean, opinion is opinion FINE. But who cares how well respected someone is? I respect Lloyd Kaufman more than I respect most movie makers, few agree with me though.

In the end this looks like another hollow, lame and dumbed down version of an awesome book. It's sad to me that now they're on their 3rd try of making this book into a movie, and STILL it doesn't meet up. Maybe it's cause' they veer to far from the original content?

I'll see it a cheap show, so I can say I saw it before I say I hate it, but my hopes are low.
