A PREQUEL to the 2007 hit sci-fi movie I Am Legend is to be made, says director Francis Lawrence.
Lawrence said Will Smith's character Robert Neville would return for the new film. He told Shock Till You Drop at San Diego Comic-Con: "We're trying to figure out some ideas for it but, yes, it would be a prequel.
"It's slightly different because it's earlier. We were three years later [in I Am Legend] so we did a lot of research into the way nature would have overtaken the city, with the cracks in the streets and the weeds, so if it's earlier, the approach will be different."
He added: "We're not positive of the time of the year, because if you go in winter, you can do some entirely different kinds of things."
Based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel, the first film told the story of the last healthy man alive, living in New York and fending off zombie-like survivors of a viral plague that had destroyed mankind. Will Smith's version was the third film adaptation of the book following 1964's The Last Man on Earth and 1971's The Omega Man.
The $150m movie was a big hit, making $584million worldwide despite strong criticism of 'unrealistic' computer-generated effects and deviations from the original novel.
