See, if i had a kid that wanted to see this badly, i would take him/her to see it for sure.

And possibly throw on the original Karate Kid movies and see what their reaction is to them as well.

I probably would too. It would be like having to sit through a Barney movie because your kid liked it. :monkey4

I don't have a kid and I ain't seeing it. :pfft:

You must have not seen the original recently. I was like you guys when I first saw the trailer for The Karate Kid 2010. I turned to my son and said it's going to suck because all remakes do, and we sat down and watched the original the following weekend.

I quickly apologized for making him sit through that and promised him that I would take him to see the new movie for being such a sport. I'm glad I did. I wish all remakes could be like this one. It's not Oscar worthy but it was a good damn movie.

There is one scene in the new movie that made me glad I watched the original with my son though. It was word for word with the original but the lines where delivered in Chinese. I'm not going to spoil it but my son turned to me and uttered the English equivalent. What an awesome moment to share with my son.

Oh really? i watched it last week on Blu-ray and loved it, it's one of my fave movies.

One of my favorite 80's movies as well! I have it on DVD and watched it a couple of weeks ago...it STILL stands the test of time.

i haven't seen the movie in a few years, so i forgot a lot of it, but it's been on cable a lot recently, so i caught it last week, and i was pretty amazed. it's really a great movie. pat morita was phenomenal. just a really great movie all around. i have no interest in the remake, although i'll probly see it on cable when it comes out.

All :goodpost: :rock

The original Karate Kid was the film that inspired me to start training myself, well that and the fact the wicked witch from the north kept beating me up.

The original is inspirational, expertly done and just a damn good film.
It's a classic and always will be for me :lecture

I intend on taking my son to see this, over the weekend.

And you have to give young Smith credit, that he has far better martial art technique than Macchio got making three karate movies.

I liked this one much more than the original. Jackie Chan totally made this film for me. The only problem I have with it is the title "karate kid"....however, from what I hear, only in America is the movie called Karate Kid....everywhere else is Kung Fu Kid.

Thats exactly what bothers me about this film. I don't like the idea that this film has the "Karate Kid" title whatsoever. I'd actually be fine with it if it hit theaters as "The Kung Fu Kid" instead. This movie has nothing to do with karate. It's a different martial art than what is portrayed in this movie.

Unfortunately Smith wanted the name recognition to springboard his kid in the movie biz. Hopefully, Smith doesn't go into the pot again and decide that after his sons next film fails that he'll remake the Goonies or Gremlins with his son in the lead role.

Realistically, the martial arts in the first film as taught by Miyagi is much closer to a Chinese systems than they are the more linear Karate systems represented.

u heard wrong. most countries retained the title karate kid.

and that's why i refuse to watch it, based on that principle alone.

i think you're right - it looks a lot like gyojuryu, which would make sense if miyagi was from okinawa. i loved learning that much more than wado-ryu. like you said, it's very circular, less linear, and a lot of the philosophy behind it seems to be directly taken from chinese martial arts like. so i guess it's an atypical style of karate but still karate.

This was one of the better remakes I have seen in recent years. Smith is really talented and Chan delivers surprisingly good acting. I liked the integration of the fall of the Detroit auto industry, as well as the vivaciousness of Taraji P. Henson, who was wonderfully funny as the mother. I was really surprised from start to finish that this remake was not only done well, but also done smartly IMO. Not to mention the action sequences, which are impressive to say the least. Smith really carries the film's dramatic scenes as well as the action scenes.
