Another reason for sequels, is that they represent the continuation of important themes and concepts--ideas--that drive human development. And perhaps, the evolution of all that has meaning in the universe. Without sequels, we would see no concrete hope for a film property to live on once the original has come and gone. It would stand alone, in sorrowful isolation, only existing for the sake of existing, with no greater or truer meaning.

Independence Day deserves better than that.

:lol :lol:lol

I can just picture the Director of the film passionately giving that speech to the studio executive and all he hears is, "blah blah blah *sequel* blah blah *sequels* blah blah *franchise is all that it has meaning in the universe* blah blah *licencing* " and all he sees is....

I just think the time for ID4 sequels have gone, the situation on the planet is far more complicated than it was in the 90's. May be that could be a strong sub plot, having the world fighting itself gives the alien invasion a foothold?

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE
We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

It did? When? It was a fun, silly popcorn movie that would never survive now... but in the vacuous 90's, and with the anticipation of the soon-to-be reissued and then next chapters of Star Wars on this distant horizon, I think everyone got behind this like a little pre-show. That was all. No one still watches this movie.

Yes I'd really like to know how ID4 upped the ante or "redefined" anything so soon after after Batman 89, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, etc. As you said it was a silly blip after those films as we waited for "real" events like new Star Wars movies to arrive.

"Jerkassic World" survived despite not being good or enjoyable even by 90s standarts.
There are zero reasons to have doubts about inevitable success of "Independence Day" sequel now.

If it makes a lot of money, it becomes good even if it's complete and utter dreck.

I must agree with RIDDICK here. I see no reason this can't be a huge movie now after Jurassic World trounced my expectation of it performing 'OK'.

Also, Independence Day WAS a huge film back in the day. It was very much a hype movie and it was very much enjoyed by audiences at the time regardless of what people think now.

Heck, I watch it from time to time. Of course it's dumb and pro-US, but still very fun.

ID4 was a hugely anticipated movie due to the insanely cool trailers. I didn't know anyone who thought it was awesome when they saw the whole thing. I heard it tested well among B&R loving Russkies though.
