I saw people complaining about the "shade inequity" in In The Heights. Like some dark skin was too dark or not dark enough.

We're at shade differences now?

Dammit -- I want to see a Cap who isn't quite as white as original Cap, one who's a little more olive skinned. I don't feel represented, dammit! SEE ME!

And yeah, Indiana Jones is about as Republican a hero as you can get. Only Superman is moreso... because 'super' is in the name.

It's not just shades. But yeah, the film didn't have any black Hispanics in leading roles. I guess the background dancers don't count as representation of that community? Funny enough, the film also didn't have any white Hispanics in leading roles, but you don't see me or anyone complaining about it. :dunno

Spielberg's West Side Story remake comes out later this year. He better CGI some black Latinos in there. 😆 Oh wait, the movie is about gangs...that should go over well with the woke mob.

As for Indy, he'll be neutered on screen. His female co star will be smarter and more capable than Indy ever was because anything he can do she can do better. By the end of the film he'll be voting Democrat and be the best man at his son's gay interracial wedding, where he'll surrender his hat and whip to the next generation.

If you think the above is an exaggeration, apparently the "shippers" are now going after uber-woke Anthony Mackie because he wouldn't buckle under when questioned about Falcon and the Winter Soldier's platonic friendship.

Indy 5 will be full of social messages and against Indy's toxic masculinity. Just look at the supporting cast and Kennedy's track record.

KOTKS > IJ 5

Having said all that, this film won't be diverse enough, gay enough, and inclusive enough for the woke mob online. If In the Heights isn't diverse enough for those nuts, I can only imagine what they'll think of an 80 year straight Republican white man saving the day. 🤭😆
Come one guys. The vast majority of people are not like that.....

Especially Indy fans. No need to get all worried about white representation. It’s still the majority of lead roles.

Why is diversity such a threatening thing?

Pfft….

Weakling-Gor

Trump Jones > RINO Jones

:chase

Besides you are not off white enough for my liking…

Wor-Bright lol

No one has a problem with natural organic diversity what they have a problem with is forced diversity huge difference.

Just go back to Leia, Marion, Ripley, Sarah Connor, Lewis (Robocop), female warriors in Road Warrior, Turner in Beyond Thunderdome, Laurie Halloween, Alice F13th part 1 I can keep going, Arnold in Different Strokes lol to see it done right.

I can tell you as a brasilian arab I don’t need you or anyone else protecting my feelings when Arnold in True Lies takes out terrorist arabs.

It’s ridiculous Cameron won’t release that movie for that stupid reason.

I’m not saying your intentions are bad but please stop worrying about protecting me I am perfectly capable of defending myself and that is something I don’t need protection from.

I don’t need my established movie heroes to look or be like me that’s freaking boring I want them to be who they are so Luke, Superman, Lando, Blade, and Ripley are perfect as they are!

I don’t need Arnold from Different Strokes to be a white female kid he is perfect as he is.

That’s natural organic diversity.

On an Indiana Jones forum the question was posed: Is TOD a racist film?

Unpopularly, I argued that it was, and that it was intentionally so because the Indiana Jones films are homages to the story telling of earlier periods.

Lucas and Spielberg were inspired by the nostalgia of the cliffhanger serials and films they watched as children, and many of those were blatantly racist. They transposed scene for scene so much from those sources into the Indy films that the homage could be confused with plagiarism.

Indy is the classic white hero of the 1930s-40s, albeit an enlightened one. The very premise of TOD is that this white hero battles evil natives and enables the saving of enslaved native children. In colonial studies this merely highlights the ineptitude or inability of natives to help themselves, especially so since the villagers plead with him for his help.

(In fact though there's a twist, because it's actually Short Round who leads the slave rebellion - but he wouldn't have been there if it were for Indy, and likely wouldn't have escaped without him).

It's these kinds of sensibilities that impinge so hard on film making today, and why there's so much forced diversity. You can't make a homage too accurately any more, because it seems to validate outdated values.

The Little Rascals racist.

Yup sure is by the adults who made it.

But the white kids were subjected to just as much zany unsafe crazy ass stunts as the black kids were a miracle no one was killed and they are funny as all hell.

Stop canceling art we need to preserve it for the time stamp that they are.

That's the problem with canceling culture. The history of art is a record of attitudes at the time, and these things are part of our development.

The same with pulling down statues of slave traders and the like. Leave them in place, but put a plaque on them that labels them for exactly what they were. The statue is therefore no longer in honour of the individual, but a statement about the wrongs they committed.

The Charlie Chan films of the 1930s and '40s were some of the more shocking entries for the period that inspired Indy, with white actors playing the Chinese detective, and Birmingham, his black chauffeur as the stereotypical menial, with wide rolling eyes who's comically scared of everything.

Some of the films and serials that Indy owes his existence to came out of late nineteenth and early twentieth century tales of colonialism, and the likes of Burroughs' Tarzan the white lord of the jungle, who found his way into numerous films (after a sex change) as white queens of the jungle.

I watched about 60 cliffhanger serials searching for the inspirations, and there were plenty of them - especially in the Dick Tracy series. Of course, some of them ended up in Star Wars films as well.

There were two serials in particular that provided a lot inspiration for TOD:

Jungle Girl (1941) had a proto Mola Ram with a horned headdress:

There was also a carving that possibly inspired the dragon behind Willie in Club Obi Wan, and a gong, which in TOD kicked the film off and played a part in the action later:

The Tiger Woman (1944) filled in some of the gaps.

Yeah, its better when the Ewoks defeat the Empire themselves.

The porridge needs to be just right.

Ewoks too dark colored, racist!

Ewoks not dark enough guilty of appropriation!

HDR Ewoks just right!

You can calibrate racism away lol

This is a pretty incredible "nod"....

Huyck and Katz were awful writers. No wonder the best bits were so blatantly lifted from other sources. Their next foray, Howard the Duck.

I never thought TOD was a racist film. In retrospect, maybe the dinner scene is insensitive, showing all these foreign people eating live snakes and monkey brains straight from the monkey's head like it was a coconut. :lol Having said that, as a kid watching those scenes, I thought it was gross but also cool. It was the kind of scene that made you smile even though it grossed you out, but not once did it make me think less of those people. In real life some people eat bats and dogs and all kind of weird stuff. Besides, it was just a movie, and that was often the mentality when watching those kind of films. It's a fantasy adventure film with magical rocks, not the Gandhi the movie.

As for the white savior trope, and the natives not being able to help themselves, I never thought about it that way, perhaps because I was so used to seeing it, which might be a legitimate problem. But again, I never thought less of the native people for being helpless. You go see a film about a heroic character, you expect him or her to do some heroic ****, help people, and save the day. You're not really thinking of the demographic he's aiding or why those people can't do it themselves. When I used to watch the A-Team or The Incredible Hulk shows, I didn't think about why those people could get the job done themselves. The show wasn't about them.
