Blue Flame of the West/Mod
A time when the actor's age actually contributed something to his on screen credibility was Jack Palance in City Slickers at age 71. That was not an action film, but his age worked in his favor.
I believe that Charles Bronson made his last Death Wish film when he was in his seventies, but the majority of those were made when he was in his 60's.
Lee Marvin was doing stuff like Delta Force in his 60's, right up to his death.
Clint Eastwood was 62 and 63 when he made Unforgiven and In the Line of Fire and handled himself just fine in the action scenes.
In fact, think of that scene in Unforgiven where Eastwood pulls out his guns from storage and tries a little target practice on that tin can. Failing miserably in his "old age," he grabs his shotgun and blows the crap out of that can. It was a nice joke that acknowledged that he was getting somewhat long in the tooth but could still get the job done--in the end, far better than the young guy who lost his nerve. (Clint kicks butt in the climax of that movie.) I can easily imagine a scene with that tone in the new Indy that would play just as well with audiences.
And last but not least, John Wayne won an Oscar for an action movie that he made at 62. He continued making action movies until he was almost 70, and if anybody made a crack about his age, he could probably have killed them with his thumb.
(ALSO: In the future, let's all please refrain from confusing Karen Allen and Morgot Kidder. )
