What might the fate be of SSC 1/4 PF's ...Are EB and HT 1/4 scale figures the wave of the future in mixed media movie related figures? Hmmm... I can choose the pose, the hands, the heads, and weapons...The portrait details are amazing and the paint seems nicer too, not to mention the clothing... Why should/would I continue collecting poly stone statues??? What are the feelings of other Freaks here??? Let's explore this....:) I'd love to hear other thoughts!

I don't think so at all.
They are great for different reasons:

Sideshow statues have the following advantages:

1) Anatomy
Statue poses are more realistic. Take the SS T1 for example. The lat flare sticking out to hold up the arm and the twisting neck muscles both look awesome and realistic and will never be possible in a figure.
Figures will always have the body facing forward in a neutral pose.

2) Poses - somewhat related to the above, but statues don't need the ugly stands and can hit poses not really possible by a figure and you don't need to worry about stability.

3) Bases
Those gigantic bases you generally get with the SS PF's are awesome and really make the piece imposing (eg. Indy ToD base and again the T1 base).

4) Joints
Topless or partially topless figures (eg Indy ToD, Arnie Dutch...even Enterbay's Bruce Lee HDs) look way better with not only correct muscle structure and angle for the pose, but no joints.

Not to say the 1/4 figures aren't great.
I own the Enterbay T-800 and its amazing.

But I don't think EB and HT entering the 1/4 market with figures will kill off the Sideshow PF

All great points!! I posted the question after a few friends at work today were talking about collecting and the 1/4 scale figure subjects. It's always great to find out what others think too...:) Thanks for your thoughtful answer!

:exactly:

Action figures will never look as natural as a statue can look.
I do have to agree that the paint jobs that Hot Toys and Enterbay pull out are consistently better than any of Sideshow's offerings, especially the skin texturing. This has a lot to do with the material as well, but it's not the only thing to factor in.
I own lots of 1/6 figures and I still buy the odd figure here and there, but none of them are in dynamic poses as they tend to look very silly.

Yes agreed ... I have seen some great EB T2 poses that look very natural, but my HT figures are hit or miss.. Also I've owned and own many SSC PF's so there is no bashing here I have 1/4, 1/6, and 1/2 scale figures and statues.. I really enjoy the hobby.

Some can make for a good alternative like the chromed 1:4 endo, but IMO they won't completely take over until they start doing comic version 1:4 figures. I don't think people are crazy over movie Marvel PFs, that makes me think of the Xmen movie Beast maquette or F4 movie the Thing maquette, people don't care about those anyway so let Hot Toys have them. Sideshow's forte has always been the comic book version rather than the movie version.

Sideshow also has the advantage of having access to studio molds, hence they can actually make movie replicas and studio maquettes when it comes to film related collectables, that's a huge advantage because those statues are essentially sculpted by the same guys who worked on the film. Having a Legacy studio Predator Maquette or Destroyer maquette is not the same as having a 1:4 Hot Toys equivalent.

what 1/4 scale purist would bring themselves to accept an ABS doll as acceptable? .... :monkey1

Some people hate having to pose figures. So statues will always be the obvious choice for them. I personally don't have room for too many 1/4 figures. Statues can go anywhere (on top of shelves, next to TVs, on a pedastool) because they're dense and don't tend to fall from their perch. Figures however need a stable location to be displayed, otherwise they'll topple to the ground.

In the end, Sideshow and their PF will be no worse for the wear even with all the 1/4 figure announcements.

I think they are in similar, yet altogether different markets.

Statues better at 1/4 scale. I just dont want a figure in anything bigger than 1/6. A giant action figure just looks silly to me.

Why is someone else making 1/4 statues with skintight sculped costumes and partial fabric of Marvel/DC Comic Characters? Or similar for Star Wars? NO didn't think so!

Would they produce 1/4 figures of risky characters like Babydoll or Skaar? No didn't think so!

1:4 scale statues especially PFs will never go away. The Hot Toys are almost at a peak that it is over priced. Spending $400 on figures / Collectibles toys will only last so long before it becomes stale.

One thing remains consistent; no matter the scale, someone else will always do it better. :lol
