who the hell waisted a perfectly good Joe question in the 11/30/09 Ask SS Q&A?????

Of Course Beachhead is next.. and Shockwave??? WTF.. he'll be a Beach Head Varient! :lol

"Arrows" is kind of a stretch. Darts? Sure. So I take it you were offended that SS used arrows as well then?

You're comparing a native american, with a loin cloth, fringed pants, an eagle, long, braided hair, and an eagle to a ninja in a gi.

https://www.yojoe.com/action/84/spirit.shtml

Variations:

There are two versions of Spirit's filecard.

One version's bottom paragraph begins with "Charlie is a Spirit and ends with Spirit's mysterious powers of the mind extend the limits of the most advanced psychiatric procedures known in our culture.

The other version's bottom paragraph begins with "Charlie is a Shaman and ends with There isn't any equivalent in our culture for what he is unless we had shrinks that could actually help people.

Yeah, that's not stereotypical.

So you didn't like how Spirit was portrayed in the comics. That doesn't mean his design was any more culturally insulting than Storm Shadow. If you go by the toon (where no one ever changed clothes) or the toy then Spirit is still less traditional in his attire than SS.

Strawman argument. Stormshadow was a ninja and henceforth, his outfit was appropriate. When he was "off duty" he wore normal clothes. Case in point, did he stroll around NAM in his gi? You know he didn't. It makes perfect sense that SS would also have a bow and Katana as those are key tools to the trade of a ninja and have not even been updated by Japanese standards to be read as: the Japanese condone the look. Whereas Spirit's arrow-shooting gun, yes arrows - not darts (go look at the figure's gun), are pretty much pointlessly impractical and a castback to the whole "Indian" stereotype that is Spirit and a stereotype that has been fought against by Native Americans for years now.

I want to re-read them too... I'll let you know what trades are out there once I hit the comic shop this month.

Issues 1-50 are available as TPBs from IDW. They're allegedly going to do the entire Marvel run.

I wish they'd do Special Missions, too.

SS is a Ninja. Ninja are trained Japanese martial artist/assassins. Ninja were killed by other Japanese warriors and have become a big part of pop-culture. I have never heard of anything being protested or boycotted due to the presence of Ninja.

Spirit is an Native American. Many Native Americans were killed to procure the ground many of us now call our home. Native Americans take the way they are portrayed quite seriously. Because of this there have been many instances of protest and boycott due to inaccurate and offensive representation of their culture.

Once again, I have never heard of anything being protested/boycotted due to the presence of Ninja.

:duh

who cares if spirit was black, white or orange...he's a cool character
screw political correctness!!

Show me anywhere in the toy line or cartoon where SS didn't wear a ninja outfit. As I said, if you had a problem with the comic, then take it up with the comic. The comic portrayal of Spirit doesn't inherently make traditional Native American clothing or clothing accents "insulting". Last I checked they still have a lot of respect for their own history.

No, but it's the stereotypical aspects of the character make him insulting. It's like telling an Asian that this is socially acceptable because it's just comedy:

Comedy or not, it's wrong and to a certain degree, racist.

Maybe Sideshow should simply produce all the third, fourth, fifth tier JOE characters to simply get them out of the way and then we can all focus on the first and second tier characters to our hearts content.

I want RIPCORD in his classic GI JOE RAH attire, but using the Marlon Wayons head sculpt to keep in continuity with the movie.

:lol

we'll have to disagree. I don't think he's without stereotype, but I don't think its completely offensive either.

Its not like GI Joe was supposed to be a "real world" representation of the military and this is what someone thought a "real" Native American would do. These are fantasy characters. In a fantasy world I think its alright to use certain mystic flair and trinkets and stuff to give a character an identity. Giving Spirit a dart gun doesn't seem any different than assuming Quickkick and Storm Shadow would actually use throwing stars or nunchucks in modern warfare...or that some whitetrash guy would run around in a football jersey or some guy in a hawaiian shirt. Its all so overtly fictional.
