I really liked how Abrams threw out the clichés. When the drill was destroyed and was falling down to San Francisco, I thought for sure it was going to hit the Golden Gate Bridge. Usually no landmark is safe in movies. :lol

I thought I knew what was going to happen and was thinking how unlikely that would be (falling from the atmosphere right onto a major landmark), but that they would ignore the odds in favor of a big cliched FX shot. Then it didn't actually hit! That's when I knew that Michael Bay wasn't directing.

If the drill had hit the bridge, then wouldn't everyone be blaming it on Spock for shooting the line? Can't do that to a hero.

I dunno...one rusty 300 year old bridge vs the entire planet? I think that's a trade he wouldn't have caught a ton of flak over even if it had hit :lol

I think it's also a rather oblique nod to the original cast, as they saved the planet in pretty much the exact same spot in ST: IV

:lol Exactly!

Now just hopefully the drill didn't fall and kill some whales. Then they might need to go back in time and... oh, wait.

:lol

Hopefully it didn't wake the Cloverfield Beast either.

On another note, I know Scotty's getting a lot of flak but he didn't bug me so much. The whole Scotty-in-the-pipe was a bit silly though. I also thought that Spock marooning Kirk on the ice planet was a bit harsh treatment. Couldn't he just confine him to quarters?

Bones did steal the show for me. Urban, Pike and Quinto were amazing. I liked the new Chekov alot too.

The alien that helped Kirk's mom during the delivery was kind of disturbing to look at! I think she was the same species as one of the aliens in the Cartoon series.

Anyone catch the new Kirk and Spock (with Spock Prime) on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update?... A little reminiscent of Shatner's "Get a life" skit.

Irish was cool enough to post it for us.

This is cool:

I have decided that this movie creates a paradox. The new timeline changes EVERYTHING we knew, BUT everything we knew would still HAVE to happen or the new timeline would not exist.

If the new timeline was the only timeline and things didn't repeat then Romulan ship would never come back in time and destroy Vulcan since nothing will play out the same way.

So, IMO both timeliems still exist in alternate status. so everything we knew and loved would STILL have to be there and STILL would have to happen or the new timeline would never exist.

Jerry Bruckheimer is all over the place. I'm sure Abrams' can handle it too.

yea but bruckheimer doesn't direct movies, that takes alot more time to do, but I really have no idea what Abrams plans are with TV, i'm just jacked to see what they have in stored for the next trek movie.

Exactly! It's not a paradox, it's the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics. :lecture

Seriously.

See there there you go. You can love this movie without fear of it ruining the old. :rock

saw the movie earlier and I must say, it's way better than Wolverine!...like 20 times better!...I'm not a trekkie purist but this flick is on my top movie to watch list!...I'm a convert!..lawd, that Chekov sure is scrumptious!..:monkey4

Just got back from this. Loads of fun. Great acting, great directing, great action and comedy. Loads of fun.

Really smart to start a new time line afresh even if they had to resort to the silly Many Worlds device. Hopefully this will be addressed a bit in the subsequent sequels.
