i saw Star Trek last night and really enjoyed it... JJ Abrams hits the old time-travel-alternate-reality reset button and boldly goes where no Star Trek story has gone before...his love of Star Wars peeks through and his casting is spot on... i have never enjoyed the franchise more.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the, forgive the pun, logic behind this statement. It seemed fitting and obvious why that line was there. Spock called Kirk out for cheating by rewriting the conditions of the Kobayashi Maru test, and his comments to Spock Prime are just a ball breaking comment, even though Spock Prime won't understand, it's just Kirk being Kirk.

that's how i saw it as well. kirk is a real smartass.

sometimes devin faraci tries to be cleverer than he actually is. generally, the guy is a very bitter, negative film geek. but he does make a lot of good points abt the film industry on many occasions. he's way off the mark here tho...

and just to add on what others are saying about nimoy---it was a great feeling to see him up on the big screen as spock once more. it gave the movie a warm, nostalgic, sentimental flavour. and a kind of gravitas u don't usually get with summer blockbusters. worked beautifully, imo. :)

Since my initial post I've read through every page (just not the pages that came before mine-- no time for that unless I'd want to give up sleep :lol ) as this movie truly is a shared experience (and I think everyone wants to share by honestly telling others--fans of STAR TREK and non-fans that they have to go and see this movie). I don't think anyone has brought this up but maybe an explanation for why Kirk would be offered the captaincy of Starfleet's flagship doesn't just stop with his saving the planet Earth and doing what a fleet of seven ships couldn't do-- but rather it's due to who was watching from above when he got his commission.

Isn't it possible that Spock Prime had a hand in suggesting to the Starfleet brass that it was necessary for Kirk to be captain of the Enterprise (in much the same way that he seemed desperate to get him into the captain's chair when they first encountered one another on the ice planet) in some way to right the wrongs that his and Nero's time travel had done? If Spock Prime's identity had been revealed to Starfleet (and he had not stayed in the shadows-- which I don't think is possible if he was one of the ones trying to organize a new Vulcan colony) wouldn't his influence/advice be huge?... And then would his viewing of the ceremony and his line "Thrusters on full" and the extra meaning that he had (pardon the pun) righted the ship and pushed the crew off in the right direction with everyone in their proper place?

Anyway, just a thought. Oh, and wasn't Bruce Greenwood (Canadian...cough cough) excellent as Christopher Pike?... His "I dare you to do better" speech to Kirk-- interaction with Sulu when they didn't go to warp-- the gravitas he brought to a minor role that most audience members (myself included) thought would die, and when he didn't that same audience (myself included) were greatly relieved.

I really liked how Abrams threw out the clichés. When the drill was destroyed and was falling down to San Francisco, I thought for sure it was going to hit the Golden Gate Bridge. Usually no landmark is safe in movies. :lol

I attribute most of Kirk's promotion to Christopher Pike. It's obvious Pike has been watching Kirk for some time and knew of his potential. When that potential was realized, there was no reason to hold him back.

Wow, too many posts to read through.

This movie frickin rocked. Enough said.

Oh, and did everyone catch the Slusho reference. I did a major facepalm on that one.

I was okay with it. It's just J.J.'s stamp. It's like Wu's doves or Hitchcock's self placement.

:lol I noticed that too. I could hardly believe it when the drill just landed in the water beside the bridge. I thought ''how wierd''.

I agree-- but I'd say it might have been a combination of the three factors (Pike, Spock Prime's influence, saving Earth) that accelerated young Kirk to the captain's chair.

- the music wasn't great or memorable. The main theme sounded like something that should have been in an X-men movie. It didn't evoke Star Trek the way Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner and Dennis McCarthy did. I wish they'd get Horner back. His themes would seem no less applicable to the new cast than they did the original cast in Star Trek II. That film has an amazing score.

Amen.

That was my biggest issue. The music.

It should have had a much larger and grand feel.

Horner's Star Trek work is some of my favorite. Goldsmith and McCarthy also wrote masterpieces for Star Trek.

This new score was very boring and not nearly epic enough for Star Trek.

Yeah, I heard it and thought what a silly thing to include. Yes, I know it's J.J.'s thing but good grief. I was waiting for the U.S.S. Oceanic to show up next.

I loved the music, especially the main theme. When it plays when the Enterprise comes out of warp firing at the missiles saving young Spock I got goosebumps. The music played perfectly IMO.

Anyone else catch the sound of the engines revving at the end as they try to outrun the explosion? It was the exact same sound from the original series!

Loved that! I also really liked how they showed the ships going into Warp. Absolutely badass. Loved the sound it made too.
