Will this be the Cloverfield sequel? Hmm...

Heard about the latest J.J. Abrams film? Probably not until today's reveal that the trailer for his next film -- which hasn't even been shot yet -- will hit theaters this weekend, in front of 'Iron Man 2.'

What is it? No one knows exactly, except that it's called 'Super 8' and is rumored to be the sequel to 'Cloverfield,' HitFix's Motion Captured column reports.

Somehow the super-secretive mastermind behind 'Lost' and 'Fringe' has managed to keep a lid on his latest project. It's the same stealthy strategy he used to sneak the first teaser for 'Cloverfield' that was unveiled to the first 'Transformers' audiences.
What else do we know about this top-secret new film? No one who's seen it yet is talking, but the mystery factor is a surefire way to have everyone talking about it Monday morning. (Or, say, the Tuesday before it hits theaters.)

Rumor has it that Abrams will not be directing 'Super 8' film himself. (The film, whatever it is, has not yet been shot). There are rumors of an Abrams-Steven Spielberg collaboration but it's doubtful that this is that project, especially as Spielberg has just announced he'll next be taking on the World War I epic, 'War Horse.'

So how do you keep your high-profile project under wraps? Word is that the crew who made the mystery trailer thought they were working on "the remake of a teen sex comedy."

Cloverfield was a cool gimmick movie, but I'm not sure I need to see a sequel. Unless they can do something novel and different with it. Because frankly, this isn't something people are going to see for the story. They will see it because the entire premise is something different than what you usually expect from movies.

I'd be down for a Cloverfield sequel.

Me too! :rock

I would like to see other stuff that was going on in the city. Everybody has hand-held video devices now, and I'm sure the kids in Cloverfield wouldn't have been the only one recording.

I'd be down for a Cloverfield sequel. Especially if it continues the story. :rock But the title and movie it's attached too make me wonder if this could rather be some kind of superhero movie.

I thought it meant Super 8 camera. Maybe that's how this one is filmed. :dunno

And we still don't know if this is a Cloverfield sequel.

hope they do something like D9 not the movie, but the way they filmed. the start in first person and after a while it would be more "normal movie" filming. They used it too much in cloverfield IMO

Gah, forgot about Super 8 cameras. D'oh.

And someone on another forum posted this:

I just got back from the screening of Iron Man 2, the review will be up a little later, but what I could not wait to write about is the trailer for*J.J. Abrams Super 8 movie. I’ll try to describe it*as best I can remember. So here we go.

The trailer starts with a black screen, that says Steven Spielberg is the producer. Then a small written narrative begins*that reads something like this. “In 1970*Area 51 was closed down and everything was shipped to an undisclosed*location in*Ohio”.*Then*you see a train*carrying lots of cargo loads. Cut to a car driving down the road that jumps up on the tracks and heads straight toward the train. Cut to black screen and then the words “From Director J.J. Abrams”. Then back to the train and car colliding into each other,*the the train derails, the camera slowly zooms in on one*of the tipped over cargo cars*of the*derailed train, then something is punching on the walls*inside the train cart trying to escape. Cut to black screen and then the title*”Super 8“.

So it does not look like a Cloverfield sequel but it’s definitely a monster film and it seems to be the Abrams/Spielberg film that’s been hinted about the last week or so.

Hopefully a trailer comes online soon because it really is a great teaser. I definitely want more.

I kind of wondered if Spielberg was involved.

Sounds promising. I like the idea that it's set in the 70s.

More info:

Deadline is reporting that they have the inside scoop about J.J. Abrams next Paramount Pictures film, "Super 8".

Deadline is saying that "Super 8" will start production this fall, and hit theaters next summer. Abrams wrote the script and will direct this movie in a traditional style and not hand-held. The movie will be shot for $45 million, and Steven Spielberg will produce with Bad Robot's Abram's and Bryan Burk. Abrams will then go to work on the Star Trek sequel, which is dated for summer, 2012 release.

The trailer begins with a pickup truck that veers onto a train track, heading directly for a locomotive. The legend appears: "In 1979, the US Air Force closed a section of Area 51. All the materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio." The truck hits the train, there is a tremendous explosion destroying the vehicle and the train. The camera focuses on one train car that wasn't destroyed. A heavy pounding is heard from inside.

I'm sure we will have more information late tonight or by tomorrow of what the "Super 8" trailer/movie is going to be all about as "Iron Man 2" premieres tomorrow, May 7th.
