The first image of Tom Cruise in director Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of the Lee Child novel One Shot has been released, and it’s…Tom Cruise standing in the middle of a street. Now titled simply Jack Reacher, Cruise stars as the titular ex-military investigator who is tasked with tracking down a serial sniper. McQuarrie had this to say regarding his take on the character:
“Someone asks him at one point in the story about the difference between a military policeman and a regular cop. Reacher points out that [for military police], every suspect is a trained killer. He is free from any sort of anxiety. He is truly not encumbered by all the bull____ that makes up our daily lives. He literally and figuratively has no baggage.”

Though Tom Cruise kicking ass is certainly a plus, I’m most interested in seeing the film’s villain played by the one and only Werner Herzog. Hopefully a trailer is on its way soon.Jack Reacher opens on December 21st.

As a huge fan of the books... I cannot believe Tom Cruise is in this as Reacher.

Is it just the height and build of Cruise that bothers you or other characteristics?

Personally I can handle the casting of Cruise.

Cruise is a pretty good actor... I feel the physical presence of the character Reacher is just too important and Cruise can't pull that off. I have been waiting for years for a Jack Reacher movie to be made ever since I first read "The Killing Floor". I was excited when I heard the movie was finally getting made, but since the casting of Cruise, well I have been gritting my teeth ever since. This could still be a good movie, just not a good Jack Reacher movie.

A good description collection from Wikipedia for those that may have not read the books... yet :)

Reacher is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast.) He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner. Reacher is strong enough to break a man's neck with one hand (Bad Luck and Trouble) and kill a villain with a single punch to the head (Running Blind and 61 Hours) or chest (Worth Dying For). In a fight against a 7 foot, 400 lb steroid-using thug (Persuader), Reacher was able to lift his opponent into the air and drop him on his head.

What actor do you picture looking like that?

Sometimes when you read books I think its not so much about what actor fits what you envision someone as, but is there an actor that looks like the charater you've grown to know.

I had a friend that used to talk non stop about Jason Bourne this Jason Bourne that, he'd always make fun of anything James Bond. When the Bourne series were announced with Matt Damon as lead I thought he was going to hang himself. He could never answer who should play Bourne, he would just say, "hes not Matt Damon". He never has seen a single Bourne flick either, even though we listened to him for years say they need to make movies about Jason Bourne.

Books are ____ing great. But Tom is not Reacher. But he could be. I'll give him a chance.

I'd rather see Tom Jane, or Nathan Fillion. Perhaps Stevenson....but his accent isn't hidden easily.

Also, on Echo Burning now. So far it's my favorite right behind this one.

Didn't care so much for Running Blind.

Killing Floor should've been first though. One Shot was good indeed, but you have to meet the character first. Plus, Killing Floor had that badass scene in the prison where he ripped a dude's eyeball out. Reacher's the ____.

That's silly that he's never seen the movies! Maybe he'll see the one with Renner since he plays Aaron Cross and only mentions Bourne.

Its posible, but I haven't seen the guy for years ( I don't play 40K anymore and we lost touch), but the point was sometimes people get so attached to characters, that no one is going to fill that role in their mind. I personally love the Bourne movies and am beyond psyched for the new split their going with Renner. After seeing him in Ghost Protocol and as Hawkeye, obviously the super spy role isn't something new for him. Hope this does well and becomes a recurring role for him.

You gotta remember that most people haven't read the books so they aren't gonna know that Cruise doesn't fit the description well. He has been working out though, but he's no where near Cena. I haven't seen Cena act, but I don't think he's be a big enough pull for a possible series of movies.
