Saw the Christmas Carol as well. They did show the Avatar Trailer in 3D, but it wasn't as good as Avatar Day. I saw it in Imax which makes a HUGE difference. On a normal screen you have so much black in your peripheral vision where as in Imax the screen is wall to wall and you feel immersed.

I am really surprised about how picky the audience has become. A movie comes along that looks like a great piece of entertainment and all people can do is poo poo it before they have seen it :)

With so many crap films that Hollywood has been churning out-I would think this to be a breath of fresh air no matter how CG or Unoriginal some might think. I really don't know how you please an audience these days.

Christmas Carol was cool. I think Zemekis spent more time on cinematography than the emotional elements in the film and I wouldnt bring a small child to see it, but the characature-esque animation was cool. Creepy in some parts but impressive in others.

Oh, and what I said about The Dark Knight vs. AVATAR- The reason it seems to lend itself to multiple viewings is because there is so much to look at in the screen. Its a feast for the eyes without being the SW Prequels. CG or not, the landscapes and flora fauna in the movie look spectacular. The bugs, plants, mechs-so much is going on that you can catch a bunch you missed the first time by seeing it again. Of course you can rewatch a movie and find new things but in Batman-what are you going to catch the second time you didnt see the first...another building in the distance :)

Visually they are completely different. I think Dark Knight tried to stay away from as much CG as they could and used models and such to pull off a lot of the effects.

Just cant wait for Dec 17th to get here. Are there any other movies coming out this holiday season you guys are looking forward to?

One last thing, AVATAR reminds me of the 300. It has a stylized feel to it. A look all its own. One of the reasons for the brightness of the film is because the 3D glasses darken the image and for good 3D the image has to be brighter. Thus, the film has a rather glowing feel to it.

I hear you...
I actually don't know exactly what to expect...
Personally, I love most of Cameron's work, except for Titanic, which was an amazing production but with too much cheese...
and honestly, I'm afraid it might be the case with Avatar as well, visually looks great, but the story seems unoriginal and with cheesy dialogue... like: "You're not in Kansas anymore... you're in Pandora"... come on!

I guess I'm worried of all the technological advance and visuals being overshadowed by a predictable story...

But, maybe me feeling this way is a good thing...
That way, if it is cheesy and predictable, then I already knew it, but if not, then I'll be pleasantly surprised!!

how the general public would adapt to a 3 hours of sinking ship movie was anyone's guess too 12 years ago. you give the public something spectacular, they WILL adapt. glasses or no glasses.

Now, now, you really can't compare Titanic. The demographic of that audience was tied to Leo and the love boat rather than the history and even the fx. Whether it be NKOTB, N'Sync, or Jonas bros (whatever the decade), their are multitudes of girls who would take 24hrs with ease.:lol

I am hoping Avatar can pull the same thing Titanic did where it didn't have stellar opening weekend but a good 10m to 20m a weekend following that for the next 3 months. As long as the reception is good.

I saw a longer trailer for this yesterday... and it did seem more interesting than past ones. I'm still not super excited about the movie (seems like it could go very wrong) but I'll still check it out.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think this movie's effects are going to outweigh the story and dialogue. And I'm still pessimistic about the CG. I fear for it, and for Cameron.

Case and point: I showed my parents the trailer tonight while I was visiting. They're both sci-fi fans, love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. I made them watch the trailer in hi-def, and my dad's response was, "Is this supposed to look like a cartoon?" I told him no, that the CG looks great. He shook his head and said, "No, that looks so fake." Mom agreed and was completely disinterested in seeing it.

I feel like this is going to be the reaction of many.

it's easy to say now in retrospect that leo kept the girls coming back for more(are you sure it's leo though, and not the way he's written by cameron?). but fact is nobody would be crazy enough to bank $200 million on a chick flick with no stars(leo & kate were not yet big names), and with a story everybody in the world is familiar with. that kind of craziness was unheard of. titanic was the biggest gamble, before it became the biggest success.

and now for avatar cameron has developed new techs to further push the boundary of filmmaking. it boasts bigger budget than titanic, also has no stars in the leads, and is banking on 3D to take off. 12 years later, cameron is still as crazy as ever, still as driven and as ambitious as ever. if anything that alone deserves our goodwill. and after the 6 solid films he's given us, he's absolutely earned our faith.

I have to be honest. I am excited for this movie. I really don't know what my expectations are. But do you really not see your fanboyism or what have you? You have been nutting all over this movie and haven't even seen it yet. Then when people give their same opinion over a trailer you get a bit defensive. I don't get it. :dunno Again I hope it's great. But in the end your opinion and everyone elses is all speculation and not fact. So have a little respect for the other camp too. They are just posting their opinions and I assure you nothing is wrong with them just like nothing is wrong with you. :duff

I agree but you can't just disregard their opinions either. Most of them are valid. Personally I still think the movie will be fantastic. This will be my first IMAX movie that wasn't meant to be educational. :lol

I would love the film to be a big hit, mostly because of Weta's attachment to it; but the storyline doesn't seem to be all too original and the creature effects aren't impressing me just yet.

So far to me, it looks like Pocahontas in space with amazing fx. Still blandish.

Back to the fanboy thing eh :lol

I am in no way disregarding peoples opinions. The point I am trying to convey is -what other movies in recent history have this much crap going on with them? (New effects, 3D, Cameron and his 10 year absence since the biggest movie ever-Sigourney Weaver, 3 hour movie, 4 years spent on making it, new imagined world, new mocap, pretty cool trailer.) Those elements to me make it a project that would seem to make it intriguing and at the very least above most projects in recent memory. It may be the biggest hype machine of all and fail miserably-but one trend I have noticed is that even the haters on this project admit they are going to see it. I think curiosity alone is going to make it a hit. Titanic numbers maybe not but I dont think its the next Waterworld by any means.

Just like everyone else has their opinion I have mine. Ive seen enough to convince me to buy a ticket.

My intention has not been my way or the highway. Just that I'm a movie buff and read the new developments on this project from the best sources daily so have a more informed opinion on some of the tech and news about the film and want to share it with you guys.

So you can just suck my big blue Avatar..... toe!:rotfl

I do enjoy the updates though! :duff

Wait is this movie 3 hours long? :horror :rock

Forgot to mention that there are several battles in the movie and the one at the end is supposed to be the biggest ever seen on screen. Which is hard for me to imagine compared to movies like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. I didnt think Lucas left any more real estate on the screen in some of those battles.

Here is TV spot #3. This is the kids version with different music and such that is airing on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. It has a few new scenes.
