yeah, you guys could disagree and talk about 9/11 but what about Katrina? How's the 9th Ward doing these days, all these years later? Not trying to start a war but there is actually nothing wrong with his post.

Couldn't agree more, were talking about a natural disaster with no aid relief in sight for days, not a terrorist attack with thousands of first responders. My CAP unit from Jersey was on scene at the WTC about an hour after the first strike. It took 5 days of looting before Canadian forces reached New Orleans with supplies. We just don't have the same culture of understanding and calm unfortunately.

He wasn't talking about rich corporate guys or crooked first-to-get-out politicians. He was talking about normal everyday people.

You do get the looters and the opportunists. But to say generalize and paint the differences in culture with one broad swoop is doing the majority of people a disservice and flat out wrong.

I don't know if one can say this without the conotation of judgement being passed either way, but I'll try. How many times have you heard of an American suicide bomber or an American kamikaze pilot? I don't know if thats a reflection in the difference between cultures or differences between leadership of the various times. Interesting to think about.

well the post was actually from the article itself and was a response to the article which the guy just posed a question as to why isn't there looting in Japan. I think there is a big differnece between cultures when it comes to something like this and Katrina is an example of this.

It was a coda to his point about the article. He is clearly talking about civic pride. That means you and it means me.

You might wanna re-read the original post:

Two words: National pride. The people of Japan love their country and do what is best for the nation, unlike the United States where we love our country and do what is best for ourselves.

:lecture so true.

I would assume his use of "we" here means "The people of the USA". He is talking about average everyday Americans. Again, you and me. Either that or he has a terrible grip on basic inclusive English words like "we" and general concepts such as "people of ....".

Seems pretty clear to me though.

And I also understand he was quoting the article, under which he posted "So True".

Also I would say that looting usually occurs in areas which had pre-existing conditions such as poverty and high crime rates. Are we going to paint an entire nations civic pride based on that? That's lazy jouranlistic editing at best and pure ignorance at worst.

So everywhere with the expection a few neighborhoods in the suburbs? I live in Camden County, miles and miles away from the city itself, one of few nice areas and in the past 10 years we have seen ____ we never saw before from Hostage situations, bomb threats in schools, child molestation and abuse at one of the top schools in New Jersey etc.. There are crazy people everywhere and when they are pushed to the brink it becomes more apparent.

Also their is looting that is necassary for survival like taking water because your government fails to deliver it.

But at the same time there were still douche bags in New Orleans trying to take Plasma Screen TVs.

No doubt we would band togeather but your just kidding yourself if you think the U.S. would not be in panic mode unlike Japan. I have to imagine the religious fanatics alone stirring up Gays Caused This and 2012 issues would in and of itself create more panic then we've seen come out of Japan. It really is impressive.

Really?
This thread turning into a national pride debacle?...
Seriously guys...
:slap

I wouldn't say that, it doesn't hurt to also learn from these events and I think we could all take a lesson from the behavior were seeing.

Tell that to the United States Navy, Air Force and Marines that are currently helping out in Japan. Tell that to the S&R teams that left from Va. and LA. that are on the ground helping. I don't see any other countries helping on the ground but yea go ahead and mad mouth the United States. :cuckoo:

That's cool, but I clearly remember the Haiti thread filled with "Illegal" aliens propaganda... I'd hate to see this thread turned into something like that, rather than one to support the people of Japan...

Care to post where I've even inferred that? That's not what I believe and that is pretty much contrary to everything I have been posting.

1) How is this thread an actual support to the people of Japan?

2) This is a discussion thread. Don't wanna discuss? Leave or start your own: "Send good thoughts to Japan" thread. :wave

Well thats just another unfortuante example of the fanatics trying to use the only oppurtunity they know they'll get to spout hate since most people tend to stear clear of crazy _______s.

I'm by no means bad mouthing the U.S., I am in CAP, I would be one of the first responders if you ever crashed over land near my state. (were like the land coast guard) But believe me when I say we are also short on volunteers until disasters happen. Then there are definately people who act heroic and want to help. But again thousands of years of cultural differances simply lead to differant beliefs and behavior and there is nothing wrong with following such a brave and stoic example.

I'm curious to know what Japan's current political/social structure is.

In the US, IMO, we are about 2 steps away from a legitimate Civil War in which the dividing line is primarily economic standing.

An incident such as this in a major US city would be the spark to that.

Not sure Japan was in that type of pressure pot.

1) People may be interested in posting links to aide and relief?...
jeez...
Or maybe news related to the catastrophe?... :dunno

2) Then discuss about the Japan earthquake... don't get so defensive dude... thousands of people are dead, millions homeless... re-read the title of the thread... :rolleyes2

We are looking at a really differant time here in the U.S. where minorites are the majority and it's going to take time for everyone to sort of melt togeather and accept everyone else's opinions, way of life etc.

I fear that it may very well take such a catastophe to unite us but again(as WW2 did after the depression), its another reason we can and should look to and learn from this and the Japanese people's resolve rather then sparking stupid debates about Nuclear VS wind or whatever other political things were looking to push.

Post like yours do more to derail a thread than discussions based on appendage issues directly related to the topic at hand. Your inclination towards vigilante moderation is really annoying. :thwak

IMO thats a pretty good discussion to have. Solar and wind power for the big win, imo. If something goes wrong at a wind plant, whats the worst that can happen a giant windmill falls and crushes some people vs a nuclear meltdown that destroys the land and all the people in it for 20 sq miles.
