IMO thats a pretty good discussion to have. Solar and wind power for the big win, imo. If something goes wrong at a wind plant, whats the worst that can happen a giant windmill falls and crushes some people vs a nuclear meltdown that destroys the land and all the people in it for 20 sq miles.

Agreed but not when were still trying to get relief to these people, that should be our only focus, it can wait since were not really building anything further and deconstuction of existing plants leads to radioactive material that we have to figure out how to dispose of. Just burying it is very dangerous as it can fall in the wrong hands. And wind and solar alone wouldn't be an immediate suitable replacement that we could feasably institute. Unfortunately for the forseeable future were stuck with Nuclear materials regardless of it's form.

Post like yours do more to derail a thread than discussions based on appendage issues directly related to the topic at hand. Your inclination towards vigilante moderation is really annoying. :thwak

*sigh*...

I just saw this video today... it's VERY eerie and scary...
the devastation is just plain awful...

that's lame....and nobody stopped them from buying all the pills? :slap

I guess not. Even on amazon.com they are going for $250 where before it was like $30. I don't think we are going to need them sicne they say there really only for people that live right near it not for the tiny amount of radiation thats going to cross the ocean.

Good question... I have no idea. Maybe since these are over the counter drugs its ok? I guess they treat it like advil?

I live in Portland, OR and I'm not worried about a radiation scare. I've had so many CT scans and X-Rays and Iodine Radiation treatment and chemo from my cancer. If it hasn't killed me yet I must be immune.

I'd better gain some kind of superpower though.

Where were you on September 11? What a bunch of crap. Seeing your location you should know better.

Before you answer assuming based on MY location: My brother was an ADA in Manhattan on 9-11. He spent4/5 weeks post 9-11 going to the funerals of people he knew who perished in that attack. After 20 years living in NYC he left because it was too painful for him to stay there. People are the same by and large wherever you look. Your post makes you sound like a cynical douche.

First of all what's with the name calling? Second what this got to do with your brother? I was simply quoting what someone else had wrote and I strongly believe as an American majority of us do look out for ourselves.

Correction. I wasn't insulting you. I was talking about how your post was making your views look to me and a few others.

Americans are pretty fiercely independent in many ways. But Looking after yourself doesn't translate to a nation full of looters and petty theft mongers.

He's like one in a big handful of people, the rest of which don't believe it'll happen. The containment unit's still intact apparently. We haven't heard any real updates since this morning either.

I understand his concern and he could very well be right, but it's hard to imagine a huge meltdown with the conditions of these plants. Not saying it won't be bad, but Chernobyl? Sounds too much like an exaggeration. Let's just say this: if whatever happens is even remotely comparable to Chernobyl (which once again involved an above-ground reactor, little protection, and happened over 20 years ago), then we have some serious amounts of fail and incompetence in terms of dealing with nuclear plant construction.

No one in Japan seems to know exactly what's going on, to top it all off. All the current updates are discussing things that *may* have happened. And now they fear a second explosion at another reactor, though we don't even know what kind of explosion it is. I don't think an accurate prediction can be made until we have some solid facts to base it off of. Regardless of who's making it, these are all just possibilities based on some incredibly obscure information. Hopefully some real answers can be given in the next few days, instead of wishy-washy headlines. Go on CNN right now and check out the banner updates at the bottom. They all contradict eachother. One is from the Prime Minister saying there's no immediate danger. One discusses high radiation release levels. One is from WHO that states the risk is low. And when you factor in the interviews, it's even harder to really know what's going on.

Not saying anyone's right or wrong, but there is no way of knowing quite yet.

Some people are saying its a level 4 nuclear crisis, some are saying its a level 6. level 7 is Chernobyl and a level 5 is Three Mile Island. I think its pretty bad. From what I have read, reactor 1 and 3 are stabilizing but reactor 2 might have a crack in the containment and a possible 70 of the rods have melted.

the biggest concern I have read now is the reactor 4 cooling pond. some reports are saying that the water level is really low and its very close to a level 7, where I have also heard that that cooling pond is fine.

the worst thing I have heard was that the plant was going to be de commissioned in February this year for being out of date but was given another 10 years to run. It was also only designed for a 7.9 magnitude earthquake and the back up diesel engines for the cooling pumps were build underground, so they flooded once the tsunami hit.

I have been following the nuclear crisis pretty hard since it happened. this is all from articles from around the web so it could all be wrong but these seem to be the constants with them all. I hope they can figure it out and stop anything major from happening.

honestly, I have no faith in humanity controlling the strength that the nuclear scientists and the addiction for energy has unleashed upon us. its like parking a bicycle on the tracks to stop a speeding train. they invented a poison without inventing the antidote. They're best weapon at this point is H20 from a giant hose. How absurd is that? Its like trying to put out a fire with an eye dropper.

yeah, you guys could disagree and talk about 9/11 but what about Katrina? How's the 9th Ward doing these days, all these years later? Not trying to start a war but there is actually nothing wrong with his post.

Other than it being a blanket statement.

He wasn't talking about rich corporate guys or crooked first-to-get-out politicians. He was talking about normal everyday people.

You do get the looters and the opportunists. But to say generalize and paint the differences in culture with one broad swoop is doing the majority of people a disservice and flat out wrong.

That's why I disagreed with it as well.

I wish this was in English, but I also wish whoever found them would get them help. I know it's a mess over there, but I know if I were there, I would help them the best I could.

These events are terrible. But, I will say this. I lived in Japan for 2 years. I have never seen a harder working, more devoted culture than the Japanese. Despite the tragedy they are enduring, I feel they will bounce back. More than likely stronger than before.

And as far as the Nuclear plant, who knows what is going to happen. But, my hat is off to the workers who walk into that plant to try and control it. They have to know that they are very well sealing their fate.
