Wonder how long that will last till you have a bunch of unemployed people and the economy completely implodes. But who am I too criticize? The US just extended unemployment to 99 weeks. Many people can make more money receiving unemployment than they can by working at a minimum wage fast food joint. Really motivates your work force, eh?
I was going to reply to his post but decided I didn't want to deal with it. Glad someone did though. Thanks.

I work for a University and so far we've been pretty lucky... budget cuts have happened, but there was enough wiggle room that I don't think any layoffs occurred. And luckily this year enrollment and on-campus living is finally up which could mean a return to normalcy.

Still, in my section I'm the last hired so if someone is going to get let go it will be me. Some stuff would get cut first (like interns and student workers) but I'd be next in line which is not a pleasant thought :lol

I'm a teacher. Other than screwing a kid or punching a kid my job is safe for life because I'm tenured. If there are cuts those who aren't tenured go first and then it goes in years of senority and if there is an opening that fits my credential (grades 6-12) then by law and contract they have to place me there before hiring out. The pay isn't good at my job but at least its secure.

I'm a personal assistant and have been with my current employer for almost 14 years. She's like family to me so I don't see her letting me go unless I really screwed up and stole from her or something like that. As long as I am adaptable and willing to do all the things she doesn't want to do, I'll be fine. But I'm not getting any younger and do wonder what I would do if I ever did have to leave this job. Fortunately for me, because I do all the things she doesn't have time to do, I am the one who knows where everything is and how to access stuff - so I feel confident she'll keep me around.

My wife is a tenured Associate Professor at a university, so her job is basically safe. The bad news is she teaches art (metals), and her department is always given grief by the university president. There is always the possibility that the whole art department could get dissolved since the arts are always the first thing to be cut from any budget. She's already on furlough and no raises for next year.

I've been working with my B-I-L at his design shop, which is basically just me and him. Early this year we lost a big client (a huge complicated mess but basically they cut all their advertising for the year) and had to lay off about 4 people (who were brought on for that project the previous year). My job is hanging on by a thread. I've only been working half days for a lower pay rate and I'm actively looking for a new job or my own clients. We've been going through our savings to compensate for my lower income. :(

The only bright side is that I get to go home early and spend lots of time with my wife (since she was off for the summer) and work on our house.

Join the police, customs or army.

Jobs for the state are always secure.

They are secured everywhere else.

No they are not. There are many state agencies in CA that have been steadily cutting back over the past two years or so. Unless you have big tenure...you live on the chopping block and always need to watch your back for that axe.

I work for a consulting company. I do third party inspection for construction such as power plants, pipelines, public buildings, bridges..etc. And up until the past few months, I felt I had a bulletproof job.

The chopping block has been under my ass constantly and looks to not be getting removed any time soon. In fact I am pretty sure that the couch will be my office within 2 months.

My brother worked for Nortel Networks for like 18 years. Way back when they were Bell Northern Research. He survived the cut for a long time...but ended up on the free agent list anyway. He bounced back and now works for Dr. Pepper. But he got slammed after a long tenure...one that should have seen him retire for that company.

99 weeks of unemployment?? thats stupid as ____. Nothing gets you motivated like 2 years of free money to sit on your ass. ____in Barry.

I graduated last year and still haven't found a promising job. Things are looking good though as I just met with the local Vet Center and they said that I should've been hired a long time ago as they need people like myself (male, early 30s, combat Vet). Luckily, I get disability and have full medical benefits otherwise I'd be really screwed. My GF works for a military Credit Union so her job is pretty much safe as long as she doesn't screw up big time.

Same here. Besides the obvious passion for teaching (and in my case creating and coaching a varsity football program as well as overseeing a drama department) I went for this gig oh so long ago for two reasons--- two glorious months named July and August and total job security.

:hi5:

I started in my current Profession when I was 19 years old. I am now 40 years old. Worked my way up from the bottom with a Corporate firm, now am a Manager at a family run business. I am a Funeral Director/Embalmer. No job is ever safe, but everyone dies.:wink1:

that is right. just like Mr.Brooks said, "l own a cemetery because its always good to invest in a something people cant do with out". :lol

I thank my lucky stars that the company I have been with for the past 13 years is still growing. We manufacture omega-3 supplements (omega-3 supplements sales have recently surpassed vitamins). I think we actually hired 8 people since last year. We are still looking for a QA person for swing shift if anyone wants to move to about 100 miles north of Seattle...

being a professional bass fisherman my job security strictly depends upon the hunger of fish........aint that a hell of a thing?

fisherman are great liars, so i got that going for me............:wink1:

Too bad this doesn't apply to support staff. For the past two years they're been cutting back and cutting back, then hiring more adminstration. We are almost at the point of having more chiefs than indians. They came to us this year and asked us to freeze our contract because everyone else did and then right after we agreed, they gave themselves and teachers a raise. Last raise for us was 3 years ago (now it will be 4) and we got 2.5%. They already said there would be more cuts next school year. Our new superintendant is also trying to get rid of the unions. He already helped get rid of the secretaries union by giving them a fat raise if they'd vote it out, which they did. Trouble is, they don't realize that he can just as easily take that away next year. My job? I'm looking for them to cut me back just far enough so that my benefits will be cut. If that happens, I may have to look for other work, which isn't going to be easy in a ghost town. :(
