The first film was meh to me. Read all the spoilers here and feedback.

As somebody put it earlier, the movie does parallel what's happening right now. Arthur's fans in the movies are disappointed he didn't become the Joker they thought him to be and it's the same with the fans of the first film. Real life imitates art as they say. Maybe Phillips is a genius. Maybe him and Phoenix concocted this thesis that the real world fans will have the same reaction as how they wrote it. And y'all proved him right. Arthur got raped in the movie and the raping continues with the memes, jokes, AI images, etc. Y'all are the cops because you were spited by Todd. Y'all are also the unknown Joker at the end because you defined what Joker should be. 🤣

I say this jokingly but hey, who knows?

I didn't like the first film. While I thought it was technically well-made, I remember describing it as bleak in a cynical, empty, nasty and uniquely post-modern way ... I've never re-watched it.

After perusing all this I'm definitely not wasting my time on the second. For me this all amounts to misery-porn and ... I never thought the character was a DC-style Joker, just a re-imagining of the concept, almost completely divorced from the source material.

I'm also sick and tired of watching Phoenix mug and grimace his way through another dead-eyed, dysfunctional loner character. It's turned into a schtick.

He was pathetic in the first film too. What’s all this hubbub? Guess I’m now finding out, but you mean to tell me there were people who connected and related to him to a great extent..? To the point where some are enraged that they continued to portray him as the pathetic person he is in the second film? While it’s unfortunate to see, the character was always a sick individual, he should’ve never been idolized or glorified.
He wasn’t pathetic at the end tho. And no one in this thread said they connected or related to the character.
Also that’s funny coming from someone with Jinx in there profile pic. It’s a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. A Comic villain.
How many people has jinx killed? She’s just as problematic as joker is so I don’t understand the whole “you shouldn’t like this character cause they did a bad thing” argument. Let’s just shut down half the threads here since we aren’t allowed to like flawed and villainous characters anymore.

I don’t understand the idolized argument either. The movie was a hit in 2019 and was never talked about again til the sequel . It came and went.
also I never got why people get so bent out of shape when people say they like the joker like he was an actual living breathing person lol

But that’s just it.

Not a soul asked for Joker 2.
Covid hit that fall of ‘19 and most people completely forgot about the film for a few years, or even film in general.

There was no hype.
Todd and Joaquin wanted to make this,
they weren’t pressured into it.

A director of his caliber doesn’t get to call the shots with WB and tell them to wait five years, regardless of how profitable the first one lucked out to be because of how truly awful Suicide Squad and ‘17 Justice League were. That’s the only reason his film was a success to the degree it was, it was a primal actor in a gritty rated R Joker film amongst goofy Affleck Batman and prison faced Leto.

WB had zero interest in continuing this story because it was never to fit in their timeline plans regarding DC at the time, which is why he was given the freedom over the character to the extent he was. This was basically WB saying his movie can pad our pockets while we figure out where we want DC to go and if it fails it isn’t tied to anything we’re actively working on building.

They did the same thing for Matt Reeves at the time for The Batman. Reeves’ Batman will never be the Batman for WB or DC.
It will always be an else world story.
Their focus is Gunn now.

WB let the kid take the dog for a walk,
car for a spin,
and it played in their favor first,
then bombed completely.

Phillips didn’t care how this sequel played out, he knew he was being shown the door once Gunn began his projects.

Just as he’s seen it happen to Snyder, David Ayer and all of the actors from that universe.
DC wanted this sequel. When you make the biggest R rated movie of all time on a $50 million dollar budget the studio wants the sequel- every studio would want that sequel. Phillips and Phoenix were the ones who told DC they aren't going to make it unless they have an idea they are inspired by, and why they demanded to have full creative control if they were going to do it- and were given it. Thats why they were paid $20 million each. They had the studio over a barrel because the studio wanted to make money, they made their demands, and the demands were met. This isn't rocket science or a conspiracy. The studio wanted a sequel to a very lucrative movie, just like they want sequels to any lucrative movie that's ever existed. It's not Todd Phillips' talent that allowed him to 'call the shots', its that they wanted a sequel to make money, and needed him attached to get Phoenix back. This is a specific scenario where he had leverage over the studio. This is fact not opinion.
