Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I've seen the movie in theaters three times now (all three times in 3D). It's one of my favorites and every time I see it I enjoy it more. Once they get into the tower, the movie goes by in the blink of an eye it is hard to believe how quickly it goes by despite not being all that short. It is just such a blast to watch. The 3D is the most well implemented I've seen in a film and the acting and action are all top notch.

Every time I see it I appreciate two characters in particular more. For one I love Ma-Ma. She's very attractive (even when they tried to put all the makeup to make her look scary) and I find her extremely interesting. She was a great villain.

But the one that really gains my interest is Judge Lex. For those who do not remember this is the main evil Judge in the film. I love him. His facial expressions and manner of speaking are top notch. He also has some of the best quotes in the film. He is a great foil to Dredd because like Dredd he has been on the force for a long time (over twenty years for Lex), but unlike Dredd he doesn't see a point in upholding the law anymore. The meat grinder quote is just too good, but my favorite line from him is everything he says after Dredd says "WAIT!"

I plan to get the BluRay day one and when I do I am going to make sure I can recite that whole monologue he has. Off the top of my head I think it is something like

"Wait? Did you just say 'wait?' Are you kidding me? Judge Dredd? THE Judge Dredd...finally gets on the wrong end of a gun and what does he say? 'Wait.' Wait for what? Wait for me to change my mind? Wait for another two or three seconds of your ____ing life because you are just too pathetic to see it all end?"

Dredd: "....No."

Again it is a very rough estimate.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

This is definitely going to become a cult classic. Obviously I'm annoyed that it hasn't made that much money (what the **** has everyone been watching instead?!), meaning it's unlikely we will see a sequel, but I'm absolutely over the moon that we have a fantastic Judge Dredd movie.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I still have hope for the sequel. The current movie was made 100% in UK, without the backing of any hollywood studio during the production, so they could do it again. Especially now that Dredd is gathering such good reviews and is heading into cult classic territory.

Also, Garland is no newbie, he has written some highly acclaimed movies and could do some waves with his Dredd. The bitter aftertaste of Stallone and Schneider is gone, and Hollywood studios are free to cash in on the Dredd mythos, now that they had their gritty reboot of the franchise.

I mean, they approved green lantern 2 for god sake...

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I just hope that if they do make a sequel, the same team handles it. I don't want Dredd 2 to be a hollywood explosions everywhere kiss scenes ridiculous fest. One of the things I loved about the first film was that the scope was very small and believable. A drug bust that went wrong, as Dredd said.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I believe Garland allready talked in some interview, about what direction he would like to take in the sequel, if he was to work on it. He wanted to focus more on the fascist side of Dredd and the whole institution of Judges. So the scope would be bigger for sure. But thematicaly, not just in a way of more cgi and explosions.

Urban on the other hand said he wanted to explore the theme of "big lie". Which I belive is the false concept of Judges always knowing what's best and just in any given situation, something that Dredd supposedly struggled with in the comics. Though I might be talking out of my ass here, as I've never read any Dredd novel.

But.

She was attractive in 300, can't believe that was the same actress.

End Of Watch. Very similar audience and it's the safer bet to see, I'm sure Dredd is that "lets see a movie this weekend, but Dredd looks weird, could be cool but End of Watch is that cop drama with Jake". Sorry, but only the faithful are going to pick dredd over End of Watch. It's the sad truth. It's following the same fate as Fight Club when that was released. It was crushed at the B.O. but it went on to be a cult hit on video and DVD.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I loved this movie too. Hopefully this character builds up some steam now that he had an awesome movie rendition. I'm going to be looking for a new tv on black friday, and I've been thinking about getting a 3D set. This will definitely be on my short list of movies to buy in 3D if I actually get one.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I'm early on but I started reading the comics the other day. I think a good subject for the next film would be the robot rebellion and then Judge Death would be perfect for the third film. The first movie did not go over the robotics at all so it would be good groundwork to introduce that in the sequel. I feel like Judge Death's appearance should be postponed till a third movie, once people feel more comfortable with the universe and cast.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

I am not sure how Judge Death would fit in this gritty real world Dredd. Robotic judges I can buy and even then a little far-fetch.

The way this Dredd was shot is that it could have been any current city in a third world country.

I just don't see the supernatural aspect working well unless they change Judge Death into this undead/mutant judge or something.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Guys, holy **** do I owe you! I totally forgot this was out and caught a late night showing tonight because I caught this thread in time.

Smart movie because it confined the action, kept the action going and probably the best use of 3D yet, though I'm not convinced it had to be only 3D. No one really overplayed or hammed up their performances, and that Thirlby woman was a fantastic compliment to Urban.

Probably the most amazing part of this film was watching how artfully they could blow apart the human skull without feeling like it was gratuitous.

This had more payoff per second than anything outside the Avengers this year. Goes without saying it was miles better than Stallone's trash. Given it's gritty tone and limited scope, overall I'd put it a notch above Hellboy, on par with Blade and a shade below adaptations like Spiderman. There really isn't anything wasted here and left me wanting to see alot more.

I hope this kicks enough global ass to warrant a sequel because I was the only one attending the late showing. Sucks.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

faaaaaaak yeah!! i love this movie. awesome casting, visually stunning, and the head shots and gore are just about right.

the similarities they were talking about with "the raid" goes as far as plot lines, but the delivery is more distinctively attuned to their own movies.

ost has that industrial kick too.

They kept the mutants thing in and it had the flying ships and such not to mention the ultra powered weapon. What made it seem way more realistic and gritty was the setting in that they were stuck inside of a ghetto urban tower. I can see them working in the robots rather simply. As for the supernatural elements, it would need to be built on some more which is why I recommend Death not be in the second film, but the third one. They can bridge the gap by including more supernatural elements in the second film. That way it won't feel random to the audience.

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

wow, with all the word of mouth I hear about this you'd think this would have made more than 600,000 in it's third weekend. I plan on seeing this next week sometime. Everything you guys saw about this makes it sound awesome.

Yeah, we need to get word of mouth out there stat! It might be too late though. I really hate the idea that this could have made so much more money if had also been released in normal High Def. Why momma why? If it had made as much as the Resident Evil movie out now, it would have made a return on the investment. They're not even halfway yet!

:eek

Re: New Judge Dredd movie

Just release it on bluray next week already, stop pretending it's going to make more money in the theaters.

Real money is on dvd/cable tv sales at this point to help them out of their deep hole.

:exactly::goodpost:

Only good thing about this box office fiasco is that Dredd should hopefully hit stores soon.
