WHEN Karl Urban was cast as futuristic law-enforcer Judge Dredd from the 2000 AD comic, he promised fans a much better film than the 1995 release starring Sylvester Stallone.
The first image of the actor clad as the character has now surfaced online. It was apparently taken from rehearsals for the film, which is gearing up to start production in Cape Town, South Africa.
I've adjusted the image a little so we can get a better look at the details. The picture has already caused pages of forum debate about helmet size, shoulder pads, badge design and facial hair - some fans seem to love the look, others hate it. You can judge for yourself here.
Urban - who was in the recent spy thriller Red and played Dr Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in the 2009 Star Trek movie - said when news of his casting emerged: "If I was to go see a movie called Judge Dredd, and the actor was to take his helmet off and full-on reveal his face and identity, I would puke in my popcorn."
He added: "There will be no gold codpieces, and we're definitely going to stay faithful to the way that the character was originally conceived and written. He'll keep his helmet on."
The actor assured fans that director Pete Travis's gritty film, to be called Dredd, would be faithful and authentic.
And he told Empire he was quite happy to wear the helmet throughout the movie: "You're taught as an actor that if you take away the eyes you have to think about what you're left with. There's the voice, there's body language. How a character does what he does speaks volumes. So those are the tools I will have to employ."
