I wonder just how far they'll go with this line?

Well, if they continue to sell the plan is to do the original 12 (with 2-3 variants) and then at least 4-5 more (Snaggletooth has been mentioned, with both short red & tall blue versions).

Right now, the confirmed line-up is:

Stormtrooper
Boba Fett
Han Solo
Chewbacca
Luke Skywalker
Darth Vader
Princess Leia
Sand People
Ben Kenobi
R2-D2
C-3P0
Jawa
Death Star Commander
Hammerhead
Walrusman
Greedo

That's 16 right there.

Here's what's on the back of the current cards (Stormtrooper & Boba Fett):

18 if you cound ST and Fett on SW cards.
I'm not counting variants, especially packaging variants. Also, you could add: Jawa with cloth cape/Jawa with vinyl cape and Han with big head/Han with normal head. They even mentioned doing the different vintage Kenobi variants with stark white and gray hair. :google

Glad I'm not really into variants. That would get :gah:

I'll probably get both Jawas and another Fett but other than that I don't really see myself getting any other alternate versions of any given figure.

I want a Lincoln Kenobi!! Look it up!

Does Fett's rocket fire? Is that another variant?

What about the telescoping/non-telescoping saber variants for Vader and Ben?

I have a telescoping 3.75" Vader. :)

I just gotta say that even though I'm not buying these, GG is damn smart. These have a very expansive appeal to the collecting community and I would say it is not just the high end collectors that want these. Probably the best selling items GG has made and will most likely never loose value like 95% of the stuff they put out.

:lol Well, technically he wasn't impaled... he shot it into his mouth and choked on it. The parents sued the toy manufacturer and, get this, George Lucas. Of course, the suit against Lucas was eventually dropped and they sued Universal or whoever instead. People just assumed BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was his doing as well (mostly thanks to Dykstra's designs & FX). It was at that point that Lucasfilm started really playing hardball with the SW property.

Old BSG is crap. And these Kenner figures are awesome, I can't say I agree with you Michael but it's always a good read. Even though you are dead wrong about the SSC Lando. Still butthurt about that review. :lol

I can't believe some people stil can't understand the appeal of these. Last I checked pencils and scissors never defined the childhoods of an entire generation.

Oh I think everyone gets the appeal. Please don't go acting like some of you own the ability to get that. :wave

Shhh! You'll spoil some peoples' pee parade.

Remember this is a discussion board where we can openly talk about things. Much like you said the other day when hammering the PT,ROTJ Dio, and various other things over the course of this board. :wink1:

Should/could these be a good bit cheaper? Probably. But it's clear that Gentle Giant's intention is to keep collectibility high with these prices and low edition sizes. Will it work? We'll see. So far, it is. Regardless, they're clearly not for everyone. And that's fine.

If we've learned anything about collectors & our varied habits and appeals on here, it's this: Value is subjective.

Yeah, they probably should be. As I said its a nice nod to older SW fans. It really is. For most of us though its a too high a price tag for something like this. I mean its $10 short of the Emperor from Sideshow, $5 of the 501st Clone, or half way to some of the Iron Man pieces from Hot Toys. Thats just for me though.

I understand for some of you its worth it to have these blown up version of the toys when you where kids. I get that but some of you are taking it I think maybe just a smidge personal.

Value is totally subjective though. Thats why I only worry or care about if I feel its worth it when I buy it.

But that's not what happened. These are all actually brand-new sculpts that were hand-sculpted by a couple guys at GG. Even the seam lines were sculpted in.

I was told at SDCC that these where scanned versions of the Kenner toys and then sculpted in the computer. Basically just blown up version of those figures. They might have been smoothed out by sculptors but they where done on the computer.

The very idea idea and appeal of these figures is personal, because it taps right into my childhood, and I'm sure many others of my generation. But whether you or anyone else likes them or not is fine by me. To each his own. As long as you're not being a prick about it like some have then you can dislike them all you want. :duff

They were scanned and then rapid prototyped via computer, but then hand sculpted from there because a lot of the details that made the original Kenner figures so lovably wonky and imperfect were lost & and had to be recreated manually.
