The Making of The Lost World by Jody Ducan provides good insight. I'm not at home at the moment to exactly reference, but the color scheme for the raptors in TLW was changed only for males, giving them a more bright and vibrant pattern akin to tiger stripes, whereas the females retained their characteristic browns and tans. The inspiration for this was carried over from modern birds and many reptile species, wherein if there is sexual dimorphism (visual differences between sexes of a given species) in terms of color, the male is invariably the more vibrant. While I have the SWS designs at home, this is the best I can do to help give you an idea.

By looking at these head comparisons you can get a good idea of the differences. It's hard to find an adequate picture of a female from TLW, in that they were generally trying to show the new and flashy males in close-ups to convey the notion of something new to the audience.
Also, I couldn't agree more about the dinosaurs being realistic in the movie, but what makes them so convincing is the combination of animatronics and CG, IMO. Just a thought, that the interactive animatronics designed by Stan Winston Studios added a crucial element to the film.
