I've been avoiding posting in this thread for the past couple of days, but I have to respond to this.
Why don't existing sandwiches garner such negative scrutiny? THEY DO. As for why they don't in this thread, that would be due to the fact that there aren't over 700 posts praising those sandwiches as being the greatest food invention ever (equating eating them with "dying and going to heaven"), rationalizing eating them (the "only eating them once in a while is okay" is probably the worst of all), and mob-attacking anyone who dares to point out that the sandwich is not healthy.
Whoppers, Big Macs, and most other fast food items are just as bad as the double down, and in many cases much worse, as you rightly pointed out. But that does not make the double down a good choice, even by comparison. It is still a stupid thing to eat. If someone wants to eat one, that's their choice. But at least have the integrity to admit that it is a stupid thing to do, but you are doing it anyway because you like the taste.
Oh, and as for what is hypocritical, there is no hypocrisy in NOT giving the same attention to the sandwiches that have existed for years right now, because those sandwiches have already been given more attention than they deserve. The double down, on the other hand, is new and getting far too much positive attention, so a little balance seems appropriate.
And with that, I'm done with this thread.
Hello again RoboDad. I think I can see what you are trying to do. When we feel strongly about something and we see the other side being discussed, sometimes we just need to champion our cause. It seems that this is what you are doing, and I applaud you passion. Certainly, it’s not going to hurt you if you never eat fast food. One the other hand those that eat fast food constantly most certainly are hurting themselves. So in that respect you are more right.
That said, I have a few responses to your post.
1) No one. Let me repeat that… No one in this thread has said that the Double Down (DD) is healthy. I did make a comparison to the obvious similarities between the DD and Chicken Cordon Bleu. And we have just been discussing how much worse most fast food sandwiches are compared to the DD. But to say that we are thus implying that it is healthy is a stretch of mammoth proportions.
2) Regarding what is hypocritical: I think it is safe to assume that at least some of the people wildly knocking the DD have had a fast food burger. For such individually to single out those who have tried a DD is the very definition of hypocrisy.
3) Comparing the DD to other fast food is only part of the story also. Many of us eat at restaurants. Many of the items at even the fanciest of restaurants will rival the DD in terms of fat, cholesterol, etc. Again, this doesn’t mean that it is wise to eat any rich foods on a regular basis, it’s just a reminder that the DD is not in some mythical category all its own.
4)
The only way I will understand how this is worse than an individual saying ‘they are healthy, and we should eat them every day’ is if you explain it to me. For right now it is outside my ability to comprehend.…rationalizing eating them (the "only eating them once in a while is okay" is probably the worst of all)…

It was my choice to eat a DD, and if I eat another one in 2 months, that will also be my choice. To eat them on a regular basis would be a stupid thing to do, just as eating Whoppers on a regular basis would be a stupid thing to do. The reason I have chosen to eat a DD is not because I think it is healthy, but because it tasted good (yes, ‘died and gone to heaven’ kinda good) I am sorry if I have said anything to imply otherwise.“If someone wants to eat one, that's their choice. But at least have the integrity to admit that it is a stupid thing to do, but you are doing it anyway because you like the taste.”
In conclusion, RoboDad, Valfar, or anyone else that chooses to not ever eat one of these, I will thank you for not judging me because I had one.
