Any USA buyers with this same issue??? Perhaps they did not treat the metal properly?

It is not oxidation. The shield is finished with a gloss sealant (I cannot say if it is polyurethane or not) those are overspray points with globbed up paint making it dark red. There is no way possible oxidation turns paint darker. Oxidation is a breakdown of the elements within the paint and it would chip, flake RUST or fade but not darken with a sealant coating like those images above. It is a just sloppy paint process. That shield is 100% coated with a sealant, no way is that oxidizing in a month setting in non extreme heat or cold. Talking over 100 degrees or 30 below.

I wonder if they'll do the AOU version with the metal/"magnet" straps on the back.

I hate that Whedon made that change to the shield.

Yes. I am a US buyer and my shield has a few errors on it. Pedestal version bought from Big Bad Toy Store. Not too noticeable from about 3 feet/normal viewing, but it is very annoying on close inspection. I am considering contacting King Arts to get a replacement, but 2 things concern me. 1. Getting one in same or worse condition. 2. shipping cost for complete return to US may prove cost prohibitive. I suspect HYDRA sabotage...

Over the weekend, I got the chance to see a classic pedestal shield out of it's box.

The finish on it was not good, especially in the silver areas where there looked to be residue areas
in the final coat. Not along the lines of the dark splotches that are just being posted, but almost
like dried super glue. The finish was somewhat smooth, but something was visibly off.

I got to see the back straps, which looked ok... still prefer the efx straps (even if the bolts come undone).

The pedestal was nice, just wish it did not have the plaque. I think that stems more from my pet peeve with plaques.
I hat Hot Toys name/logo plates on everything, as I know who the figure is... don't need it in print on the bases, lol.
Which is why I like the efx plaques, since they can be displayed or put back in the box.

Overall, I don't think the King Arts shield is a $900.00 shield. Is it worth $700.00 (original BBTS price)?
If the finishing were without flaws, then I would say definitely yes. As it is... probably closer to $600.
All in the eyes of the beholder, I guess.

I ended up sticking with the efx shield as the display piece, and I am happy with it. It has it's faults too,
don't get me wrong... but the authenticity of it gives it the final edge, in my book.

Hey man thanks for the mini review and it stinks your finish Is not to your liking. The plaque is VERY easily removed. Just heat it with a hair dryer and it will fall off, its a really easy fix.

Your comment on the shield being in the eye of the beholder is spot on. Right or wrong I think the KA is getting viewed with a much harsher lens because of the price. What you need to consider is the retail price of $400 for this item. Shipping, popularity and vendor markups are pushing this shield well over $900.

Working with metal and especially curved metal there are going to be imperfections at this price range. We are not buying cars, they are prop replica shields. So while yes the paint overspray and the run on the sealant sucks it is still a fantastic product with the stand and the quality of the metal shield. A light sanding on the silver will take out those marks, so if you are that bothered by it. Get some 1000 grit sandpaper and smooth it out and make the silver really pop. A recoat of poly spray and the problem is gone. (Same deal as with spraying the Hot Toys Cap shields)

Once you get over the initial shock the shield is not perfect in hand you will realize it is the best mass produced shield out there right now. Yes there will be more shields by other companies made, but just like 1/6 figures it is a process and as technology and process improves the quality will as well. These shields are setting the bar for shields to start at $900 and mark up to $1,300. I cannot imagine the bitching level at that range.

The best advice I can give to someone looking for a shield is to have reasonable expectations if not paying for custom shields starting at $900 dollars. You are taking the risk and paying a premium well over retail to acquire this for well above was what the original price at $400. More importantly setting you up for disappointment if you are expecting perfection. Even with the paint issues the shield is gorgeous.

As Dino states above the shield is worth it at $600, which is still above the retail, so there is some additional inherent value to the quality of the shield for him.

That's why I'm so happy with my Lager!!!:yess:

Oh Phooey. Your Lager has the same overspray Dino is taking about on the KA. Its plain as day on your pic below the star. The silver has topcoat smears all over it. I am sure up close you have issues with the paint/sealant as well.:pfft::lol

There are no perfect shields! Its a myth like big foot or Nesse. :rotfl

Just took this quick ones before I had to run out. More pics to come soon when I have time.

At some angles and when struck with light, there are things happening, one spot even looked like it had a small indentation but there was none, but do you think it warrants a return? Otherwise, the shield looks amazing from afar, even up close if you're not nitpicking every small detail. Hopefully the straps hold out, it would suck to have it break like the eFX. Stan's coming to town in a few months so I'm hoping to get it signed then, but it's coming with me to AoU! :yess:

Yeah, those were the exact same streaks in the one I saw in person... lots of it in all of the silver and red areas.
I am guessing that is standard for all of them, though.

So would the sandpaper take care of that? Or would it start to remove the red paint?

Do not sand the blue or the red. You can work the silver since it is raw metal behind the coating. The best thing to do to fix the silver would be to sand with 500+1000+1500 sandpaper and you can get it to the point where the coating is off. Can then reapply a quality poly and sand it again until you work the sheen you would like to have.

Can make it glossy semi satin muted. Relatively very little work to fix.

yea, unfortunately, it looks like all of them suffer that stained look to different degrees. I think that would ultimately, drive me nuts :(. It's too bad cause it's a nice shield.

I could prolly live with the issues for $400-600 shipped, but not some of the crazy prices they go for in the US on ebay. I think a lot of those ppl are going to be disappointed paying that much.

I tried just wiping it with microfiber cloth and the slightest bit of warm water and it actually smooths out a little bit. Overall, it doesn't bother me at all since I'll probably be carrying it around to theaters/conventions anyhow, and the value will still be high with Stan Lee signed on it, even though I'm not going to sell it :wink1: Just seeing it on display with the signature of one of it's writers, and of course, Stan the Man's first credited work being on Captain America, I think that's all people looking at it on display will really care about. :yess:

But does BBTS offer a return/exchange with free shipping for that? Or would you be getting something similar in return?

yea, if it comes with issues, they do, but they all seem to have this flaw, so you could get something worse. So the water gets rid of some of those streaks?

The streaks remind me of the way eFX had shown a picture of all their shield just hanging from racks and drying. I almost wonder considering how they were sprayed and wonder if the drying method contributed to the streaks. Regardless, I also have very similar streaks to you all yet and unless you're looking for them, you won't notice them at all. It's definitely not a deal-breaker unless you're an ultra perfectionist. King Arts overall did a wonderful job for a mass-produced shield and it looks absolutely stunning and definitely stands out. The streaks are a mild disappointment compared to the overall awesomeness of the piece.
