Re: Kong: Skull Island

MaulFan said it perfectly. Kong was supposed to be more of a tragic figure that, while powerful, is still vulnerable enough to be the victim and seen as an innocent casualty of greed.

Godzilla, while also a victim of the ways of mankind, is vengeance incarnate. Mankind was helpless, and it took a fictional weapon to put an end to the threat. And depending on the continuity, even that didn't end him.

That's deep. I thought King Kong was about a giant horny monkey who loves women.

Never really understood what Kong was hoping to accomplish with those women if he ever did have them long enough.

He straight up ripped Jessica Lange's top off.

But I had to go back and edit my previous post. Autocorrect.

Re: Kong: Skull Island

Even though the movie has it's low points, Peter Jackson did a great job of portraying the humanity of Kong and answering the question of what would Kong do with the women. Despite size and species differences, Kong was looking for a companion in that movie and Anne entertained him and showed him sympathy and empathy. If he hadn't gotten that, my guess is he'd eat her, thus the pile of other necklaces she saw for those who weren't good enough.

There's actually an evolution to it. The '33 film is pretty much devoid of any relationship between Kong and his lady, '76 establishes some care from her towards Kong, and by the 2005 movie, she almost looks at him as a friend.

That's the one good thing with all the remakes, each one is pretty unique, despite the 2005 taking many cues from the '33 film, and they offer something new and different.

2005 was the first time I really felt for Kong during his death. The '33 scene really doesn't make me feel anything for him, '76 did a bit, but there are multiple moments in 2005 where they really make you feel a sadness in him as he's just trying to survive.

Re: Kong: Skull Island

I think I must be one of the only people around that really loves '76. It comes in for a good kicking, but there's lots to like IMHO. besides, who can hate that John Barry score?!?

Re: Kong: Skull Island

Whatever about the Kong in Peter Jackson's film, would people really be stupid enough to deliberately try bringing this particular Kong back to human civilisation, back to New York? The ****ing size of him. How could they expect to contain him?

I still have a soft spot for '76 Kong. It had some good FX for it's time from Rick Baker IMO, plus you had Jessica Lange in her prime and The Dude!
My son still has the rubber King Kong that I got in 1976 when I was four.

I think this new take on Kong looks pretty fun and damn what a loaded cast.

For me, '76 was and is Kong and the measure I hold other Kong movies against. I grew up watching that and Lives, which isn't as good. One of the voids in my collection I hope to fill one day is a nice representation of Baker's Kong. The shot of this new Kong walking through the water in the trailer reminds me of the '76. The new one feels like the '33 head on the '76 body with realistic features.

The fact that they made a life size robotic Kong (as hokey looking as it was) was very ambitious for the time.

I have a couple representations of the '33 and 2005 Kong in my collection, but I'm not aware of any half-way decent '76 Kong collectibles unfortunately.

You know dissing 33 like that is considered high treason and blasphemous lol

At one time I had the X-Plus 8" vinyl of the 33, I gave it away to a friend who'd appreciate it more though, I still have the 2005 counterpart though, pretty cool little figure. I had the MEZCO roaring 2005 once and regret selling it, especially since the few that ever hit eBay are way to expensive. Hoping to see this new movie spawn some merchandise for past and present Kong. I'm tempted by the SHMA, but it seems slightly more generic gorilla overall and not exact to the Kong model.

This movie has some stunning visuals already.

I love how he looks very much a unique creature here more like the '33 or '76 and not just a giant gorilla, the design is a really well handled balance.

Love these two shots.

I still have the Mcfarlane '33 Kong and the 15" Mezco fierce/angry faced 2005 Kong.

Re: Kong: Skull Island

Kong '76 was about 50 feet tall according to the movie.

Here's a good comparison of a human near that Kong's head vs the new one. Seems like 2017 is around 150-200 feet tall, which is around half Godzilla 2014.
