I don't see why the govt. couldn't let the owners decide if they want a smoking or non smoking establishment. I am sure there would have been more than enough restaurants/bars to cater to both.

I would prefer to eat at a non smoking restaurant - and would therefore choose one that catered to that....not a big deal to me if there were other restaurants that catered to smokers.

Dumping grease into the creek is a bit different, imo as is keeping rodent killer next to food.

What's the difference between someone smoking outside or inside? It is damage that person is knowingly doing to themselves. Same thing with people who go to an establishment where smoking is allowed...they know they will get second hand smoke. If they dont' want it, take your business elsewhere.

Here in Seattle there are private clubs where smoking is allowed...the owners of those establishments are not responsible for the health issues of their clientele.

I mean shoot, the same could be said for drinking...it causes health problems as well. It may not affect those around them as seconhand smoke does, unless they get drunk and start a fight or try to drive.

Anyway, I just found it curious since it was brought up - not trying to start a debate really or anything.

I am not a smoker and never have been, but IMO, it's should've been up to the resturant or bar, etc. whether there should be smoking or not. If a resturant allows smoking and you don't like it, then don't go in there. There have always been places that didn't allow smoking at all or provided smoke free areas.

They are different, but not completely different. My point is there is presidence for society to enforce a rule (based on safety) onto a business proprietor that otherwise might not want to follow.

IMO I do believe in personal freedom, but I think we live in a society so crowded and so self centered that freedoms are impeding other people's freedom. Smoking is one of those really pointlessly self serving freedoms that 1 smoker can really make things difficult for dozens of people. Its like when a unwashed cattle hand shows up at the restaurant. eew.
