Thats what I was initially thinking too but if Edwards is right about Kleenex to me that'll only be if Godzilla has some very emotional departure from this film. Godzilla vs Biollante or King Ghidorah didnt have that. Gojira and Godzilla vs Destroyah did, however.

I know we have seen script leaks that contradict that though. But, in a film that already is rumored to set up a universe where there can be multiple Godzilla creatures--anything can happen.

I can't quite figure out how this will end and be a tear-jerker, it could go a few ways.

GODZILLA DIES

This film is poised to establish that Godzilla is a species and not just a lone creature, at least, that he existed that way in the past. That opens the door just like Gojira and Godzilla Raids Again that there's more than 1 still alive and there you get your sequels.

My guess is, if he dies, it's at the hands of a Muto, because they nuke him in '54 and he survive so no man-made device can take him down, and with Edwards trying to stay grounded in reality, I don't see him using a fictional weapon like the oxygen destroyer. Perhaps this end could make Godzilla mankinds hero incidentally, with his fight with the Muto ending in both dying, so Godzilla didn't try to save mankind, he just fought with his natural enemy and the outcome benefits us.

KEY HUMANS DIE

Edwards said in an interview, he wanted this film to have a beginning and end, he didn't want the story to spend too much effort setting up sequels, and based on Godzilla's past, you can kill off everyone and start the sequel with a new cast. Would the studio want to, probably not, studios like to keep characters when doing series, but it's an option. Not saying they'll kill off everyone, but they could kill of an important character in such a profound way that it gets a reaction from the crowd.

Yeah my gut feeling was that a human cast member was going to die. Cranston is the favorite so far so he can have the emotional impact bit dont sleep on Watanabe either. He is playing Serizawa after all and he does indeed know how to do a touching death scene.

But just the way GE described the original Gojira's death scene in 1954 where it was still sad for the beast....i cant help but think he means the monster

I'm not worried about sequel possibilities and I'm a big fan of well done Godzilla death scenes, I'm confident if they kill this Godzilla, it won't hurt the franchise or the movie, it'll be done well and be memorable. The death scenes in '54 and '95 were very well done, and while he didn't actually die, the volcano scene in '84 felt like a death scene because we had no idea if he'd be back.

The key is balancing things, Godzilla stands as an embodiment of nature's wrath, but at the end of the day, he's also just another living creature like any of us, you can have him be the most evil, fearsome thing you've ever laid eyes on and then flip it around and make you feel bad for him if done right, Toho's done it. He was never meant to be liked, they just went with a monster to tell an atomic weapons commentary film and it resonated with people.

I really feel like this film will earn a lot of respect from the world for the character, the only sad part is, I also feel like ignorant people will say things like, finally, Godzilla can be taken seriously, or something like that, because they know nothing beyond the campy films.

I do agree with everything you just said. As much as I seeing something succeed in killing him, all the more memorable Godzilla moments have been the ones you mentioned. Seeing him wade into the sunset just doesn't have that tragic, somber feeling. So I guess I'm a bit conflicted. Want Godzilla to go out on top and not be put the meat grinder often since he somehow always comes back, but if they can make an impactful ending and it's a great tone, then it will add to the film.

They could make it tragic. Seeing him being so powerful and mankind can't stop him. Final scene could be the humans watching what they created walk off into the water seeing that it's a force of Mother Nature and it can't be stopped so they must prepare for his imminent return one day

Meh it's Hollywood. They won't kill him without a good resurrection plan in place. :D

I was actually at the SXSW screening. Here's my overview of the event, including a description of the new footage at BIGFANBOY.COM.

Let me know if you have any questions!

They can make it a spectacle sure but in no way shape or form will that match the gutwrenching feeling of seeing the monster have to be put down especially if they do so that truly emphasises the fact that Godzilla is also a victim as well as a "villain".

Yea I remember being 8 yrs old and watching 54 with my godzilla toy in hand. When they killed him my hear almost skipped a beat. I couldn't believe it because as a kid I thought he couldn't be stopped and was invincible. I was so shocked. Funny thing is I watched this movie right before I saw 98 zilla.

The problem with 98 wasn't killing him, but more the how, he was ultimately just a very large animal that had the same vulnerabilities any animal would and it only took trapping him to take him down. Toho's Godzilla deaths always incorporated some danger to humanity or sacrifice and in every instance, a very extreme solution. Simple missiles were not enough, you had to eat away at him on a molecular level or drop him into a volcano or just have him naturally die melting from the inside out.

I have no doubts that if he dies in this new movie, it will not be easily accomplished, and it will not be easy to watch.

If they kill him off.... the end credit scene should be they discover eggs in a stadium somewhere. :lol

Yea lebron gets ready for the big game and hears something in the locker room. He opens the door and discovers a giant egg. He screams "What the ****" before millia burst out of his egg and opens his mouth toward the camara cutting to black and presumably devouring Lebron James.

Any way I think the movie will make you think they kill him but an after credits or mid credits scene will show his heart beating out somthing. Maybe he hibernates giving him time to grow more powerful than before.

They should have the GMK tease. He's dead/blown up/nuked but the end credit scene has his still beating heart beneath the ocean. BOOM cue the i f u kube music :panic:

That was such a weird ending, I never understood it. Only his heart remains, it's beating, maybe it'll morph into a new body :lol

I will say this, please, please, please, don't ever kill Godzilla off again in such a way that forces a constant rebooting of storylines, keep some continuity, that ruined the Millennium series.
