No question, but it's a situation where technical issues forced him into a better film. If the shark worked perfect all the time and we got tons of shark footage, it might have felt like too much or taken away from scenes where the human aspect filling in for his absence was very strong. Just because CGI allows you to show a creature a lot doesn't mean you should.
All the trailers have pretty much given us either brief or cropped or shrouded glimpses at Godzilla so far, and fans are still excited and already talking about how memorable the scenes and moments will be because of the visuals. There's something more frightening in seeing children's faces gazing upon their impending doom with a brief reflection of it on the window that a big monster just outright popping up.
I could see Cranston or Watanabe possible cementing themselves as such a character just based on their acting and what their characters seem about. I don't think anyone will do a bad performance but these two seem the best candidates for such a thing.
The characters in JAWS are as classic as the shark though, too bad the movie's so old likeness rights and merchandise weren't considered, would be cool to see toys out there from the movie.
