I kind of wonder, was Cranston a bad casting choice. Not to say the other humans wouldn't still be boring to people, but with Cranston's current cult status and being in a cult film, were people just so excited for more Cranston that the second he was taken out, there was no keeping their interest. Would people still say Joe shouldn't have died if it had been a great performance from an actor with less of a following?

I've watched some of Breaking Bad just to get a feel for his range since the only role I really know him for is Whatley on Seinfeld, but I have no attachment to him as an actor.

Cranston was only hired so that they could get his name on the poster and show him in the trailers to get the all the Breaking Bad fans watching Godzilla. Whether they killed him off due to not being able to afford him for the whole film is another thing. They would have been best to hire a different actor for the role and use them in sequels. Joe was the best character by far.

Yup, you are correct Jaws.

Box office mojo utilizes Cinema Score for projecting consumer confidence and they specifically correlated the false advertising to the B cinemascore.

Believe it or not, a B Cinemascore sounds good but for the investors, distributors and exhibitors it is viewed as a negative thing. :lol

Its either an A or GTFO! :lol

Am I not always correct ;) ;) :) J/K...... not really :)

I wonder if the marketing group felt like they had to push the evil side of Godzilla to make a distinction from the campy Toho films and Godzilla '98, did they think if they played up Godzilla as a hero, would people not take it seriously?

I think that may have had something to do with it. They sort of killed two birds with one stone... Godzilla fans would go no matter what... Nice Godzilla or Bad Godzilla. But to get the average movie goer into the theater they had to give Godzilla a serious dark tone....

Why they just did not make that movie I do not know... They seemed to be going that direction with the comi con trailer that the film makers used to convince the studio heads.

I guess they figured they had to have monster on monster battle and if they were going to do that someone had to be the clear good guy.

I also agree with someone here who said that if Godzilla fought and killed civilians and the military on purpose the studios would probably want to make sure Godzilla died at the end.... Who knows??? All I know is that It's the most drastic change from advertising to actual film that I can remember.

Without Question in my mind that is what Box office Mojo was talking about when they said "the movie they saw wasnt exactly what was advertised"

If that concept was that the film was called Godzilla and that Godzilla was in it then yes... But they advertised a very dark film with a Godzilla on the rampage and the Military going against him story. Even when we found out about other monsters they still had Godzilla appear as a huge problem. And Edwards apparently ran around saying that exact thing.

I give great credit to the trailers for not showing us anything... But they mislead us into thinking it was a very different film in tone and story IMO.

tylerdurden in all honesty I an glad you loved it... There are many of us who flet mislead. You did not and came out happy. I am going again tonight with much diffeent expectations, so I am hoping to feel more like you do.

i get that you're upset that you felt the movie was not what you wanted it to be based on your perception of the marketing. and yes, this is very much about your perception and expectation. and it's fine. it's just not the be-all & end-all of the issue with the film, which is what i have been trying to explain several times. it's not just about misleading advertising. even if the advertising was misleading it was not the sole cause of people's dissatisfaction. not a single person i've spoken to, both in person and online (beyond this forum), has ever complained about the misleading advertising. and i've spoken to a LOT of people about this, as a friend of mine works in the sales & distribution dept at warner bros in my country. it includes the asia-pacific region. believe me, there were a whole lot of complaints about the film though. some morons even said the atomic breath was "stupid" and did not "look right". facepalm moment. other more informed opinions were issues about the characterization, and the lack of subtext compared to the 1954 original as a cautionary metaphor for nuclear weapons. now these latter comments i tend to agree with.

on the other hand, i've also come across a whole lot of people who flat-out loved the film. in my screening (imax 3D), people were actually cheering at the end. that rarely happens. my other half watched the same trailers as i did, read the same issues of empire, and when the film came out, she had a blast. she didn't care that she got something different from the trailers. in fact she loved the fact that godzilla saved the day. now am i saying your issue about feeling misled is not valid? certainly not. i don't blame you if you saw it that way. but at the same time, you cannot insist that my view is wrong in that i neither find the advertising to be dishonest nor that i care even if it held back on certain things.

at the end of the day, i can tell that you're a passionate fan jaws. i respect that and understand how it must feel to not have something live up to expectations. maybe upon further viewings you can let go of that initial disappointment and enjoy it more. i honestly feel edwards made a far better godzilla film than many on this board are giving him credit for. as campily fun as those "godzilla vs" flicks were, they're also terribly silly. and let us not forget that this 2014 version could've easily turned out like emmerich's "zilla". now THAT one was a major letdown in every single way.

I think most of our disagreement comes from the Mojo article that states that people felt that the film did not give them what was advertised which is how I felt.

Even my 8 year old said that he thought the film was going to be about Brody's dad and that Godzilla would be the bad guy. But it did not effect his enjoyment either.

Of course people are going to like and dislike this film for different reasons and some of yours are beyond valid. Jye and I were going on by the mojo article and our own feelings and how they related to what was said in that article.

But one thing we can agree on is that is could have been a lot worse as the 98 Godzilla proved. :)

I will take this time now to say how I felt with a repeat viewing. I went with my Kids again and two of my best friends. One who saw it with me the first time and one who saw it for the first time tonight.

For me. I enjoyed it more. It still had major human character problems and dragged because of that. This film was in desperate need for a character like Ian Malcolm type character... Just for some humor and entertainment value. Someone who would be amazed at what was going on around him. All the characters in this film seemed a bit too board and unimpressed by monsters running around. For me the characters were even more boring this time around just really needed to be fleshed out more.

I actually like almost every Mutos and Godzilla scene leading up to the final fight more then the final fight itself. Much of that had to do with the fact that the Military was more involved and the daytime shots of the monsters in San Fran were great. I still beyond love everything on Hawaii. I love the shots of the monster fights on TV.

I freaking love the Godzilla turn around in the smoke during the final battle and he lets out his loudest, longest and most impressive roar... I love the piano strike we get when we first see Godzilla in that shot... My 8 year old even pointed out how cool the music was and that it sounded like a "Horror" movie during that part.

Because I knew just how much of a good guy Godzilla was and how the tone would be not as dark as the trailers I was able to enjoy our Hero Godzilla much more.. I still wish they let him use his arms more... I did not like them looking dead at his sides during some of the battle scenes.

I actually felt like the film needed a bit more Godzilla this time around... But again I put that on the characters that did nothing for me.

I am looking more forward to a sequel now and am now more afraid they won't make one because of the fall off during the second week. I really hope we get a longer directors cut with more Godzilla and the I wont feel as bad if we don't get a sequel :)

So before second viewing I gave this a 6 out of 10 and that score felt like it was going to drop to a 5. Now I would give it a solid 7. Better character would have boosted it up to an 8 or 9 easily.

My friend who saw it before basically agreed with how I felt about it the first time and enjoyed it much more just like me the second time now that he knew what film he was getting.

My Friend who had not seen it before enjoyed it very much. He did comment that he was glad that I gave him a heads up/warning that the film was much different then the trailers. He was glad he knew that Godzilla was such a "good" guy and not bad in anyway before he saw it.

My kids loved it again. Like I originally said. This is the perfect Godzilla for 5 to 10 year olds.

So while I wish the film was more like the trailers, I did enjoy it enough that I wont pile on it anymore. Was it the perfect Godzilla film... No... and those trailers made it feel so close. But it was a good Godzilla film and for now that is good enough for me.
