I agree with a lot of what Jaws said.
Some of the trailers did make it seem like it was going to be an apocalyptic film with Godzilla destroying humanity, but it actually didn't bother me at all that it didn't turn out that way. I love the heroic Godzilla movies from when I was a kid, so seeing him play the hero in this new movie actually had me pretty excited. Godzilla wasn't the problem with this movie for me. He looked cool, he acted like Godzilla for the most part although he was a little bit Gamera-ish, and he had the atomic breathe.
I was disappointed with the human drama. I was really invested with Cranston wanting to find the truth about what was happening and what caused his wife's death, and when he was taken away so abruptly, I didn't feel like his full story was told. In my opinion, he had a lot more to contribute to the story and it would've been nice to see him regain his family in his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson through facing the monsters that destroyed the life he knew. I know that some thought all the performances were great, but I really thought bomb disposal guy was better when he had Cranston to work with. I like Ken Watanabe, but I felt like he just stood around looking confused and giving Godzilla background info throughout the film, and I think they could've done more with him too. I don't know. It's a competent movie and it's certainly not horrible. I just wish it was a little better.
