Re: LES WALKER - All NEW Custom Works 2009

Is someone labeling Les a recaster?

Amarcord asked this :

Les, I didn't know you sculpted that Hicks head?
I always thought it was the Hot Toys with some hair added?

Its not for me to judge wheter this was meant sarcastically or he was actually asking the question wondering since I don't know if he knew or not anyway but basically this is what has started this conversation.
LES IS NOT A RECASTER EITHER WAY.

Regardless of what happened I think this is basically going from something that shouldn't have been noticed into something big.
Les is not a recaster nor does he need anyone thinking he is ( ecspecially now ) , end of.

Re: LES WALKER - All NEW Custom Works 2009

Sorry, but I'm confused. You said earlier "So Spikey Haired Hicks, as made BY ME, and not recast or something is OFFICIALLY RETIRED! No more Hickses EVER after this series. (All who have asked recently are accounted for, so no worries, this is for new requests only)" Am I accounted for one, cause I asked you for one earlier this year?? Just curious.

Good point! You did so you are safe! Email me and I will put you on the last come list. Thanks man.

Let's focus on the point of the thread and not the entire recasting debate.

Re: LES WALKER - All NEW Custom Works 2009

I agree. A recast is just that. Same as the original. If you wanted the original you'd search one up.

A reworked sculpt is covering up the bad errors, of an unremarkable or even remarkable sculpt, and improving it. It's reasonable to assume it would start from one getting self satisfaction from ones efforts. Then it may continue on to sharing that effort. At least while one feels that satisfaction for artistic merit.

If you wanted something better for your purpose, you might be hankering after, what is really a limited edition, reworked sculpt, akin to a prototype in the hands of a master painter. For collectors, it's more than a bonus for being there at the right time.

Sorry about that crap, I was responding to a post 10 posts ago. In the meantime things got back on track, and with pics. :rock

Where do they get them marvelous pics?

You are amazing Les. Glad to see you back in the saddle. :p

For my Ledger Joker I'd like a Road Duel/Interrogation 1, with the eyes looking up a bit like in your photo. I'll email you to that effect as well.

Keep up the amazing amazing work.

Re: LES WALKER - All NEW Custom Works 2009

Thanks guys.
One more comment, and in defense of Amarcord's intentions I think...
I LOATHE recasters as much as anyone. I have my Superman head, which is mine by about 3/4 as I did redo, an already vastly (and badly) reworked Jim Mattox head to get it. It took me about three months and was hard as hell to do. I do not own the rights to Reeve, nor do I think anyone else here does. So, that is about what a resculpted head is now. I haven't wanted it recast while I offered it, hence my not selling it unpainted, but you know, I realized that since I don't own the rights to Mr. Reeve's likeness anyway, what difference if someone DOES recast it, IF THEY IMPROVE IT, so if anyone that has my Reeve head now, improves it....I want one! LOL!

So, to defend anyone that hates recasts of another artist's work, I applaud Amarcord and anyone else that champions such things. I would be truly hypocritical if I didn't.

As for Hicks, he is indeed a reworked Hot Toys Stoner, and I have no idea who sculpted Stoner...but I would mention them every time if I did. However, again, as I made it THE Spikey Haired Hicks head, and no longer Stoner, I feel some sense of ownership of it now, after the rework, hence my often used, possessive terms, "My Hicks" head. I mean that mostly in reference to it, as opposed to other Hicks type heads, and not solely as an "I sculpted it" statement.

As for ownership of said Spikey Haired Hicks..well, Hot Toys didn't have Michael Beihn's permission to use it for Stoner or for that matter, Hicks. But guess what...I DID! Mine is practically sanctioned by the man himself!
I met him at the 2007 FX Toy show, where I believe Dark Artist Josh can back me up when I say, I told Mr. Beihn of my head, and my figurework of him, to which he replied,
"I just hope you make him look better than I do now! *laughed* Go ahead!"
I would call that a statement of support.

SO, I at least have HIS permission to have, and for all intents and purposes, sell the head. In a matter of speaking. More than Hot Toys at any rate.

Me with Michael Beihn at the 2007 FX Toy show....

As for copying other artists, work and making profit on it without sharing any credit...OK, I am with you on that one! :rock
Hope that doesn't happen to me.
Never know how Karma works....

Anyway, my final word on the matter.

Re: LES WALKER - All NEW Custom Works 2009

LES
Been trying like mad to get an unpainted Hicks sculpt for a while now, please PM me if it's a go.

Thanks
Your mailbox has been full (no surprise) so I've had a hard time contacting you, not your fault

Re: LES WALKER - All NEW Custom Works 2009

If it wasn't for people taking figures and reworking them, this hobby wouldn't be half of what it is today.

Actually, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have a true Anakin in my collection!
Hopefully I'll have a true Legolas and Ripley someday!
And with Les' Hicks and Hudson I will have the true Colonial Marines!:D
