George Lucas Joins Billionaire 'Giving Pledge'

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas has become the latest billionaire to join Warren Buffett's "Giving Pledge" by vowing to give half of his fortune to charity.

The 66-year-old filmmaker and philanthropist said he joined the pledge to help education. "I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race," he said in a statement. "A good storyteller is ultimately a teacher -- using the arts as a means of making education emotionally meaningful."

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have convinced 38 other American billionaires to donate half of their fortunes to philanthropic causes. They include New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens, media mogul Ted Turner, hotel mogul Barron Hilton, and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.

"If you want to do something for your children and show how much you love them, the single best thing — by far — is to support organizations that will create a better world for them and their children. And by giving, we inspire others to give of themselves, whether their money or their time," Bloomberg said.

Half of all of OUR money we have ever spent on Star Wars has been given to charity...
Still it is a damn cool thing to do - money has a bad way of making you need more!
I think everyone - even the charity cases :monkey3 - would have appreciated some more new Star Wars movies written and or directed by someone with some more talent and inspiration because the prequels reeked of atrophy and detachment at a writing and directing level.

he should donate the money to all of us who have spent money on his stuff through the years so that we can respend it on more stuff, that's the way to stimulate the economy. Instead they give it to charities where 80% of the money goes to administrative bs

Good for him.. Glad he is giving back to the community. If I had as much money has some of these bloody billionares have, I would give back to the needed..

His kids shouldnt be mad at all, they are going to get billions regardless... I would be happy with just $100K... :)

It's no sweat off his back. He'll make all of that back in merchandising alone.
